Abstract

We address the physics of a regular arrangement of independent magnetic impurities embedded in a band of interacting electrons. We focus on the one-dimensional case that can be studied using bosonization and in which the electron bulk is described by a Luttinger liquid. The impurity spins interact with the electrons via magnetic exchange that introduces the possibility of Kondo and Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) physics. We find that for two special values of the interactions, the model can be refermionized as a noninteracting electron band hybridized with a regular array of resonant levels. These solvable limits provide access to impurity correlators that correspond to either extended algebraic order or local screening. A physical picture emerges of how the interelectron interactions can stabilize either Kondo or RKKY physics depending on the sign of the interaction.

Boundary Kondo problem in the integrable t−J model

Jianhui Dai, Yupeng Wang

We study the problem of a boundary magnetic impurity coupled with the solvable $t\ensuremath{-}J$ chain. This model provides a good starting point to understand the Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid as well as in a strongly correlated host. As the Kondo coupling constant ${J}_{i}$ may take arbitrary values without breaking the integrability, we can study the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic Kondo problems simultaneously. It is shown that the boundary coupling generally splits the impurity spin into two effective spins and induces the interaction-dependent residual entropy. The absence of Kondo screening in an antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling regime is found, which indicates a genuine competing effect between the Kondo coupling ${J}_{i}$ and the impurity potential ${V}_{i}.$ A local Landau-Luttinger liquid description is proposed to calculate the specific heat of the impurity.

A holographic two-impurity Kondo model

Andy O’Bannon, Ioannis Papadimitriou, Jonas Probst

We propose a model of a strongly-interacting two-impurity Kondo system based on the Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, also known as holography. In a Landau Fermi Liquid, the single-impurity Kondo effect is the screening of an impurity spin at low temperature T . The two-impurity Kondo model then describes the competition between the Kondo interaction and the Heisenberg interaction between two impurity spins, also called the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. For spin-1/2 impurities, that competition leads to a quantum phase transition from a Kondo-screened phase to a phase in which the two impurity spins screen one another. Our holographic model is based on a (1 + 1)-dimensional CFT description of the two-impurity Kondo model, reliable for two impurities with negligible separation in space. We consider only impurity spins in a totally anti-symmetric representation of an SU(N ) spin symmetry. We employ a large-N limit, in which both Kondo and RKKY couplings are double-trace, and both Kondo and inter-impurity screening appear as condensation of single-trace operators at the impurities’ location. We perform the holographic renormalization of our model, which allows us to identify the Kondo and RKKY couplings as boundary conditions on fields in AdS. We numerically compute the phase diagram of our model in the plane of RKKY coupling versus T , finding evidence for a quantum phase transition from a trivial phase, with neither Kondo nor inter-impurity screening, to a non-trivial phase, with both Kondo and anti-ferromagnetic inter-impurity screening. More generally we show, just using SU(N ) representation theory, that ferromagnetic correlations must be absent at leading order in the large-N limit. Our holographic model may be useful for studying many open problems involving strongly-interacting quantum impurities, including for example the Kondo lattice, relevant for describing the heavy fermion compounds.

RKKY interaction and Kondo screening cloud for strongly correlated electrons

Reinhold Egger, Herbert Schoeller

The RKKY law and the Kondo screening cloud around a magnetic impurity are investigated for correlated electrons in one dimension (Luttinger liquid). We find slow algebraic distance dependences, with a crossover between both types of behavior. Monte Carlo simulations have been developed to study this crossover. In the strong-coupling regime, the Knight shift is shown to increase with distance due to correlations. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange through a conventional superconductor studied by the density matrix renormalization group

Cassian Plorin, Michael Potthoff

The competition between the Kondo screening and indirect magnetic exchange in systems with two magnetic impurities coupled to a conventional $s$-wave superconductor gives rise to a nontrivial ground-state phase diagram. Here, we utilize the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and exploit the non-Abelian spin-SU(2) symmetry to study the phase diagram for two quantum spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurities locally exchange coupled to large one-dimensional chains. The nonlocal interimpurity exchange is treated as an emergent Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) coupling. We find qualitatively different phase diagrams for impurity spins coupled to sites with odd or even distances $d$ on the chain and a partial Kondo-screened spin-doublet phase that extends over the whole range of local exchange couplings $J$ in the limit of weak superconducting pairing strength $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$. Our numerical DMRG studies are complemented by exact diagonalization of small (quantum-box) systems and by perturbative-in-$J$ computations of the $d$- and $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}$-dependent RKKY interaction. It is thereby demonstrated that the specific system geometry is essential for our understanding of magnetic impurity interactions in superconducting hosts, and thus for insights into the control of quantum-state properties in nanoparticle systems and topological superconductivity.

Kondo Problems in Tomonaga–Luttinger Liquids

Akira Furusaki

Quantum impurity problems in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) are reviewed with emphasis on their analogy to the Kondo problem in Fermi liquids. First, the problem of a static impurity in a spinless TLL is considered, which is related to the model studied in the context of the macroscopic quantum coherence. In the low-energy limit the TLL is essentially cut into two pieces when interaction is repulsive. The orthogonality catastrophe in a TLL is then discussed. Finally, the Kondo effect of a spin-1/2 impurity in a one-dimensional repulsively interacting electron liquids (a spinful TLL) is reviewed. Regardless of the sign of the exchange coupling, the impury spin is completely screened in the ground state. The leading low-temperature contributions to thermodynamic quantities come from boundary contributions of a bulk leading irrelevant operator.

Generalized Calogero-Sutherland models for Kondo physics in the Luttinger liquid

Hua-Chen Zhang, Ying-Hai Wu, Hong-Hao Tu

We propose a series of models with inverse-square interactions, for which the ground states have an exact closed form, that describe one localized spin-$1/2$ Kondo impurity coupled to Luttinger liquids of itinerant bosons or fermions in the continuum or on a lattice. The model Hamiltonians contain two parts: a two-component Calogero-Sutherland model with an open boundary in the continuum or a long-range $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$-type model on the lattice, and long-range Kondo couplings between the impurity and the particles. The wave functions of the ground states in a certain basis have Jastrow product forms with powers depending on the particle statistics. It is shown that the wave functions can be expressed as chiral correlators of certain conformal field theories, which reveals that the particles are fractionalized to fully screen the Kondo impurity. This insight would be very useful in future studies on the very difficult problem of Kondo physics with interacting baths.
