Abstract

Optical parametric processes underpin quantum photonics, while free-electron--photon interactions offer agile pathways to generate nontrivial quantum photonic states. These threads have so far largely progressed independently, whereas placing free electrons in a driven nonlinear system can potentially activate coherent parametric interaction channels for joint state engineering of both types of particles. Here we unify these paradigms by developing a general theoretical framework for parametric free-electron--photon interactions in a nonlinear optical system driven by degenerate parametric down-conversion. Unlike free electrons in a linear bath, here they can couple to Bogoliubov quasiparticles through two detuned phase-matching channels, where the parametric process and free-electron interactions can quantum amplify each other. Seeding the interaction with squeezed vacuum yields gain-only or loss-only electron energy spectra, and enables electron-heralded squeezed Fock states; with bare vacuum, postselecting electron energy sidebands generates high-fidelity Schrödinger cat states. Our results show how optical parametric interactions can quantum shape free electrons and photons, potentially enabling a quantum parametric dielectric laser accelerator that mitigates the need for temporal phase synchronization, thereby allowing acceleration probabilities to approach unity even for phase-random electrons.

Cavity-mediated electron-photon pairs

Quantum information, communication, and sensing rely on the generation and control of quantum correlations in complementary degrees of freedom. Free electrons coupled to photonics promise novel hybrid quantum technologies, although single-particle correlations and entanglement have yet to be shown. In this work, we demonstrate the preparation of electron-photon pair states using the phase-matched interaction of free electrons with the evanescent vacuum field of a photonic chip-based optical microresonator. Spontaneous inelastic scattering produces intracavity photons coincident with energy-shifted electrons, which we employ for noise-suppressed optical mode imaging. This parametric pair-state preparation will underpin the future development of free-electron quantum optics, providing a route to quantum-enhanced imaging, electron-photon entanglement, and heralded single-electron and Fock-state photon sources.

Electrons herald non-classical light

Germaine Arend, Guanhao Huang, Armin Feist +9 more

Abstract Free electrons are a universal source of electromagnetic fields, and fundamentally their quantized energy exchange may facilitate generating tunable quantum light. Because the quantum features of the emitted radiation are encoded in the joint electronic and photonic state, they can only be revealed by a measurement accessing both subsystems. Here we demonstrate the coherent parametric generation of such non-classical states of light by free electrons. Investigating electron–photon correlations, we show that the quantized electron energy loss heralds the number of photons generated in a dielectric waveguide. In Hanbury Brown–Twiss measurements, we observe an electron-heralded single-photon state using antibunching intensity correlation, whereas two-quantum energy losses of individual electrons yield pronounced two-photon coincidences. Our results will enable the tailored preparation of higher-number Fock and other optical quantum states on the basis of controlled interactions with free-electron beams.

Generating optical cat states via quantum interference of multi-path free-electron–photons interactions

Feng-Xiao Sun, Yiqi Fang, Qiongyi He +1 more

The novel quantum effects induced by the free-electron-photons interaction have attracted increasing interest due to their potential applications in ultrafast quantum information processing. Here, we propose a scheme to generate optical cat states based on the quantum interference of multi-path free-electron-photons interactions that take place simultaneously with strong coupling strength. By performing a projection measurement on the electron, the state of light changes significantly from a coherent state into a non-Gaussian state with either Wigner negativity or squeezing property, both possess metrological power to achieve quantum advantage. More importantly, we show that the Wigner negativity oscillates with the coupling strength, and the optical cat states are successfully generated with high fidelity at all the oscillation peaks. This oscillation reveals the quantum interference effect of the multiple quantum pathways in the interaction of the electron with photons, by that various nonclassical states of light are promising to be fast prepared and manipulated. These findings inspire further exploration of emergent quantum phenomena and advanced quantum technologies with free electrons.

Electron-Photon Quantum State Heralding Using Photonic Integrated Circuits

Guanhao Huang, Nils J. Engelsen, Ofer Kfir +2 more

Recently, integrated photonic circuits have brought new capabilities to electron microscopy and been used to demonstrate efficient electron phase modulation and electron-photon correlations. Here, we quantitatively analyze the feasibility of high-fidelity and high-purity quantum state heralding using a free electron and a photonic integrated circuit with parametric coupling, and propose schemes to shape useful electron and photonic states in different application scenarios.Adopting a dissipative quantum electrodynamics treatment, we formulate a framework for the coupling of free electrons to waveguide spatial-temporal modes. To avoid multimode-coupling-induced state decoherence, we show that with proper waveguide design, the interaction can be reduced to a single-mode coupling to a quasi-TM 00 mode.In the single-mode coupling limit, we go beyond the conventional state ladder treatment, and show that the electron-photon energy correlations within the ladder subspace can still lead to a fundamental purity and fidelity limit on complex optical and electron state preparations through heralding schemes. We propose applications that use this underlying correlation to their advantage, but also show that the imposed limitations for general applications can be overcome by using photonic integrated circuits with an experimentally feasible interaction length, showing its promise as a platform for free-electron quantum optics.

Acceleration of Free Electrons by Photonic Time-Crystals

Lior Bar-Hillel, Alexey Gorlach, Ido Kaminer +1 more

We study the quantum interaction between free electrons and photons in a time-varying media, and find that periodic modulation exponentially amplifies electron-photon coupling within momentum gaps, enabling arbitrarily large momentum transfer. By preparing the light in a two-mode squeezed vacuum state, the electron momentum grows faster than its spectral spreading, establishing time-modulated photonic media as a platform for accelerating free-electrons and shaping their quantum state.

Enhanced quadratic nonlinearity with parametric amplifications

Wen-ju Gu, Zhen Yi, Lihui Sun +1 more

Realization of quantum nonlinearity in quadratic optomechanics, including optical and mechanical nonlinearity at the single-photon level, is crucial to explore extraordinary quantum features. Here we investigate an exponential enhancement of quadratic optomechanical interaction via parametric amplifications. The parametric process can form an in-phase amplified quadrature, and the rate of coupling to the in-phase quadrature will be exponentially increased even to the single-photon strong-coupling regime. Concretely, to achieve the optical nonlinearity mediated by the quadratic optomechanical interaction, we can employ a mechanical parametric process, and the in-phase mechanical quadrature can strongly couple to the cavity mode, leading to an enhanced optical nonlinearity such as a photon blockade. Similarly, via employing the optical parametric process, the in-phase optical quadrature can also effectively mediate the quadratic interaction, leading to an enhanced mechanical nonlinearity such as mechanical squeezing, bi-excitation exchange interaction and feasibility of quantum non-demolition detection of mechanical motion. However, the parametric process can also enlarge the noise, and a squeezing vacuum with the phase matching condition should be introduced to suppress the same.
