Abstract

We investigate re-entrant topological behavior in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with generalized Bernoulli-type disorder in the intradimer hopping amplitudes. We show that varying the values and probabilities of the disorder distribution systematically changes the number and widths of disconnected topological windows. The phase boundaries are obtained analytically from the inverse localization length of zero modes and agree with numerical calculations. We further show that the mean chiral displacement provides a useful dynamical probe of the disorder-induced topological transitions, and we outline a possible implementation in photonic waveguide lattices. These results clarify how the structure of a multivalued disorder distribution influences re-entrant topological behavior in one-dimensional chiral lattices.

Reentrant localization transition in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with random-dimer disorder

Zheng-Wei Zuo, Dawei Kang

The question of whether the topological insulators can host a stable nontrivial phase in the presence of spatially correlated disorder is a fundamental question of interest. Based on theoretical investigations, we analyze the effect of random-dimer disorder on the quantum phase transitions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We explicitly demonstrate that, due to the absence of symmetry, there are no in-gap edge states in certain disordered topological nontrivial gapped phases and the bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down. However, the fractionalized end charges still appear at the ends of the chain. The energy distribution possibility of the in-gap edge states and the possible values of fractionalized end charges are dependent on the concentration of random-dimer disorder. On the other hand, random-dimer disorder and dimer hopping intertwine in an interesting manner. Reentrant localization transition behavior appears, which is evidenced by the fingerprint of the inverse participation ratio, normalized participation ratio, and tunneling conductivity.

Reentrant topological phases and entanglement scalings in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Model

Guo-Qing Zhang, L. F. Quezada, Shi-Hai Dong

Recent studies of moiré physics have unveiled a wealth of opportunities for significantly advancing the field of quantum phase transitions. However, properties of reentrant phase transitions driven by moiré strength are poorly understood. Here, we investigate the reentrant sequence of phase transitions and the invariant of universality class in moiré-modulated extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. For the simplified case with intercell hopping $w=0$, we analytically derive renormalization relations of Hamiltonian parameters to explain the reentrant phenomenon. For the general case, numerical phase boundaries are calculated in the thermodynamic limit. The bulk boundary correspondence between zero-energy edge modes and entanglement spectrum is revealed from the degeneracy of both quantities. We also address the correspondence between the central charge obtained from entanglement entropy and the change in winding number during the phase transition. Our results shed light on the understanding of universal characteristics and bulk-boundary correspondence for moiré induced reentrant phase transitions in 1D condensed-matter systems.

Single particle dynamical signature of topology induced by single mode cavities in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain

Fabrizio Pavan, Grazia Di Bello, Giulio De Filippis +1 more

Witnessing and tracking topological phase transitions induced by interactions with the environment is a crucial challenge. Among the various experimental approaches to detect topological properties, the Mean Chiral Displacement (MCD) has emerged as a powerful bulk probe in one-dimensional chiral systems, allowing the extraction of the topological invariant from single-particle dynamics. Here we study the dynamics of a single particle in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain coupled to multiple cavity modes via inter-cell hopping terms, focusing on the out-of-equilibrium behavior of the MCD. We show that, whenever the frequency is larger than the static hopping amplitudes, the coupling induces a discontinuous jump in the MCD, already at small times, signaling that such a coupling also leaves a signature in the survival edge probability when the dynamics are initialized at one of the two edges. For frequencies comparable to the static hopping amplitudes, topological order competes with dissipative effects, which makes the MCD behave smoothly, retaining information about the driven-dissipative topology.

Steering of topological criticality in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain via non-Hermitian substitutional impurities

Juan A. Cañas, Guo-Qing Zhang, A. Martín-Ruiz

We investigate the topological phase in a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain in the presence of a finite concentration of non-Hermitian substitutional impurities. Our primary focus is the discovery of a deterministic mechanism to actively reconfigure the topological phase boundaries by introducing site-dependent, non-reciprocal intracell and intercell hopping amplitudes. Specifically, breaking the internal structural symmetry of the non-reciprocal impurity hoppings induces a targeted macroscopic displacement of the critical point. This mechanism allows for the controlled expansion or compression of the topological phase strictly via local defect asymmetry. We validate this boundary displacement through finite-size scaling analysis. The extracted correlation length critical exponents ($ν\approx 1.455$ and $ν\approx 1.397$ for symmetric and asymmetric configurations, respectively) confirm a disorder-induced departure from the pristine SSH universality class, with the exponent diverging at high defect densities. We also report an impurity-induced real-to-complex spectral transition geometrically characterized by the Non-Hermitian Skin Effect. Ultimately, our results establish how isolated non-Hermitian asymmetries cooperatively interact to deterministically shift macroscopic topological protection.

Fate of high winding number topological phases in the disordered extended Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

Emmanuele G. Cinnirella, Andrea Kazemi Nava, Gabriele Campagnano +1 more

We use the Lindblad equation approach to investigate topological phases hosting more than one localized state at each side of a disordered Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain with properly tuned long-range hoppings. Inducing a nonequilibrium steady state across the chain, we probe the robustness of each phase and the fate of the edge modes looking at the distribution of electrons along the chain and the corresponding standard deviation in the presence of different kinds of disorder either preserving the symmetries of the Hamiltonian or not.

Topological and dynamical phase transitions in the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model with quasiperiodic and long-range hoppings

Weijie Zhang, Yi-Piao Wu, Ling-Zhi Tang +1 more

Abstract Disorders and long-range hoppings can induce exotic phenomena in condensed matter and artificial systems. We study the topological and dynamical properties of the quasiperiodic Su–Schrier–Heeger model with long-range hoppings. It is found that the interplay of quasiperiodic disorder and long-range hopping can induce topological Anderson insulator phases with non-zero winding numbers ω = 1 , 2 , and the phase boundaries can be consistently revealed by the divergence of zero-energy mode localization length. We also investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics by ramping the long-range hopping along two different paths. The critical exponents extracted from the dynamical behavior agree with the Kibble–Zurek mechanic prediction for the path with W = 0.90 . In particular, the dynamical exponent of the path crossing the multicritical point is numerical obtained as 1 / 6 ∼ 0.167 , which agrees with the unconventional finding in the previously studied XY spin model. Besides, we discuss the anomalous and non-universal scaling of the defect density dynamics of topological edge states in this disordered system under open boundary condictions.
