Abstract

We investigate quench dynamics in the quantum $S=1/2$ XXZ antiferromagnetic chain with staggered and anisotropic interactions in the flat-band limit. Our quench protocol interchanges the odd- and even-bond strengths of a fully dimerized chain, enabling us to derive exact time-dependent states for arbitrary even system sizes by working in the Bell basis. We obtain closed-form, size-independent expressions for the von Neumann and second-order Rényi entanglement entropies. We further calculate exact Loschmidt echoes and the corresponding return rate functions across various anisotropies and system sizes, and identify Loschmidt zeros in finite chains. Our analysis reveals the precise conditions on the anisotropy parameter that govern the periodicity of the dynamical observables. In addition to the analytic study, we perform two types of numerical experiments on IBM-Q quantum devices. First, we use the Hadamard test to estimate the Bell-basis expansion coefficients and reconstruct the dynamical states, achieving accurate entanglement entropies and the Loschmidt echo for small systems. Second, we implement Trotter-error-free time-evolution circuits combined with randomized Pauli measurements. Post-processing via statistical correlations and classical shadows yields reliable estimates of the second-order Rényi entanglement entropy and the Loschmidt echo, showing satisfactory agreement with exact results.

Non-analytic behavior of the Loschmidt echo in XXZ spin chains: Exact results

Lorenzo Piroli, Balázs Pozsgay, Eric Vernier

We address the computation of the Loschmidt echo in interacting integrable spin chains after a quantum quench. We focus on the massless regime of the XXZ spin-1/2 chain and present exact results for the dynamical free energy (Loschmidt echo per site) for a special class of integrable initial states. For the first time we are able to observe and describe points of non-analyticities using exact methods, by following the Loschmidt echo up to large real times. The dynamical free energy is computed as the leading eigenvalue of an appropriate Quantum Transfer Matrix, and the non-analyticities arise from the level crossings of this matrix. Our exact results are expressed in terms of “excited-state” thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, whose solutions involve non-trivial Riemann surfaces. By evaluating our formulas, we provide explicit numerical results for the quench from the Néel state, and we determine the first few non-analytic points.

Dynamical quantum phase transitions and the Loschmidt echo: A transfer matrix approach

F. Andraschko, Jesko Sirker

A boundary transfer matrix formulation allows to calculate the Loschmidt echo for one-dimensional quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit. We show that nonanalyticities in the Loschmidt echo and zeros for the Loschmidt amplitude in the complex plane (Fisher zeros) are caused by a crossing of eigenvalues in the spectrum of the transfer matrix. Using a density-matrix renormalization group algorithm applied to these transfer matrices, we numerically investigate the Loschmidt echo and the Fisher zeros for quantum quenches in the XXZ model with a uniform and a staggered magnetic field. We give examples---both in the integrable and the nonintegrable cases---where the Loschmidt echo does not show nonanalyticities although the quench leads across an equilibrium phase transition, and examples where nonanalyticities appear for quenches within the same phase. For a quench to the free fermion point, we analytically show that the Fisher zeros sensitively depend on the initial state and can lie exactly on the real axis already for finite system size. Furthermore, we use bosonization to analyze our numerical results for quenches within the Luttinger liquid phase.

Disordered Kitaev chain with long-range pairing: Loschmidt echo revivals and dynamical phase transitions

Mishra, U., Rouhollah Jafari, Akbari, A.

We explore the dynamics of long-range Kitaev chain by varying pairing interaction exponent. It is well known that the distinctive features of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a closed quantum system are closely related to the equilibrium phase transitions. Specifically, the return probability (Loschmidt echo) of the system to its initial state, in the finite-size system, is expected to exhibit periodicity after a sudden quench to a quantum critical point. The time of the first revivals scales inversely with the maximum of the group velocity. We show that, contrary to expectations, the periodicity of the return probability breaks for a sudden quench to the non-trivial quantum critical point. Further, we find that the periodicity of the return probability scales inversely with the group velocity at the gap closing point for a quench to the trivial critical point of truly long-range pairing case. Also, analyzing the effect of averaging quenched disorder shows that the revivals in the short-range pairing cases are more robust against disorder than that of the long-range pairing case. We also study the effect of disorder on the non-analyticities of the rate function of the return probability which introduced as a witness of the dynamical phase transition. We show that the non-analyticities in the rate function of return probability are washed out in the presence of strong disorders. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Topological classification of dynamical quantum phase transitions in the xy chain

S. Porta, Fabio Cavaliere, Maura Sassetti +1 more

Understanding the properties of far-from-equilibrium quantum systems is becoming a major challenge of both fundamental and applied physics. For instance, the lack of thermalization in integrable and (many body) localized systems provides new insights in the understanding of the relaxation dynamics of quantum phases. On a more applicative side, the possibility of exploiting the properties of far-from-equilibrium states, for example in pump-probe experiments, opens unprecedented scenarios. The effort in providing a classification of far-from-equilibrium phases, in terms of local or topological order parameters, is hence intense. In this context, the concept of Dynamical Quantum Phase Transition (DQPT) has been introduced. A DQPT is (roughly) defined as a zero of the Loschmidt-Echo as a function of time and represents a natural non-equilibrium counterpart of a thermal phase transition. Here, we investigate the DQPTs occurring in the quantum xy chain subject to a quantum quench of finite duration. We show that the number of distinct DQPTs can vary as the duration of the quantum quench is varied. However, the parity of such number only depends on the pre-quench and post-quench Hamiltonians and is related to a topological invariant.

Loschmidt echo zeros in finite-size quantum systems with linear quench

Zhen-Yu Zheng, Xudong Liu, Siyan Lin +2 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions reveal singularities in quench dynamics, characterized by the emergence of Loschmidt echo zeros at critical times, which usually exist only in the thermodynamic limit but are absent in finite-size quantum systems. In this Letter, we propose a theoretical scheme to probe Loschmidt echo zeros in finite-size systems by applying a two-step quenching protocol, which offers an experimentally feasible approach to study Loschmidt echo zeros. Using the transverse Ising model as a test bed, we identify that the exact Loschmidt echo zeros can be always accessed by tuning the quench rate, when the quench is across the phase transition point. The associated rate function displays divergence at critical times, accompanying with the change of the dynamical topological order parameter. The critical times are influenced by the quench rate, system size, and momentum modes, embodying the interplay between finite-size effects and critical dynamics. Moreover, the generality of these observations is further confirmed in the XY and Haldane models.

Time evolution of the XXZ Heisenberg model

Wenshuo Liu

The recent advance of techniques in controlling ultra-cold gases in optical lattice provides a ideal experimental platform to study quantum many-body physics. The almost isolated and highly tunable systems created in these experimental setups are perfect for studying coherent time evolution of closed quantum many-body systems. In this thesis I present an analytical approach on the time evolution of the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain (XXZ model), which is a fundamental model but has rich dynamics. This approach is developed through generalizing the Yudson contour representation. With this approach I obtain the exact time-dependent wave functions after a quantum quench in an integral form for generic initial states and for any anisotropy ∆. I reformulate the integrals and show their physical interpretation as propagating magnons and their bound states, which were predicted by the “string” solutions of Bethe Ansatz equations. To apply the new approach to specific problems, I calculate the quench dynamics of various observables from some particular initial states: starting from a local N ́eel state I calculate the time evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter–staggered magnetization; starting from a state with consecutive flipped spins I calculate the evolution of the local magnetization, and predict the evolution of the induced spin currents. These results and predictions can be confronted with recently experiments in ultra-cold gases in optical lattices, and are expected to contribute to the understanding of non-equilibrium physics of isolated many-body systems.
