Abstract

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model has attracted widespread attention due to its relevance to diverse areas of physics, such as high temperature superconductivity, black holes, and quantum chaos. The model is, however, extremely challenging to realize experimentally. In this work, we show how a particular form of Floquet engineering, termed ``kinetic driving'', effectively eliminates single-particle processes and creates quasi-random all-to-all interactions when applied to models of Hubbard type. For the specific case of the Bose-Hubbard model, we explicitly verify that the driven system indeed reproduces SYK physics by direct comparison of the spectral form factor and out-of-time ordered correlation functions (OTOCs). Our findings indicate that a cold-atom realization of kinetic driving -- achieved through modulation of hopping amplitudes in an optical lattice -- offers a practical and accurate platform for quantum simulation of the SYK model.

Hybrid Brownian SYK-Hubbard model: from spectral function to quantum chaos

Ning G. Sun, Peng Zhang, Pengfei Zhang

A bstract Understanding the emergence of complex correlations in strongly interacting systems remains a fundamental challenge in quantum many-body physics. One fruitful approach is to develop solvable toy models that encapsulate universal properties shared by realistic systems. In this work, we introduce the Brownian SYK-Hubbard model, which combines the all-to-all random interactions of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with on-site Hubbard-type interactions. This hybrid construction enables the study of the interplay between nonlocal random dynamics and local correlation effects: (1) As the interaction strength increases, the single-particle spectrum exhibits a transition from a single peak to a two-peak structure, signaling the onset of Mottness. (2) The spectral form factor undergoes a sequence of dynamical transitions as the evolution time increases before reaching the plateau in the long-time limit under strong Hubbard interactions. (3) The out-of-time-order correlator is computed by summing a series of modified ladder diagrams, which determines the quantum Lyapunov exponent and reveals a violation of the bound on branching time. Our results establish a new analytically tractable platform for exploring the effects of Hubbard interactions in chaotic many-body systems.

Out-of-time-ordered correlators of the Hubbard model: Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev strange metal in the spin-freezing crossover region

Naoto Tsuji, Philipp Werner

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model describes a strange metal that shows peculiar non-Fermi-liquid properties without quasiparticles. It exhibits a maximally chaotic behavior characterized by out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs), and is expected to be a holographic dual to black holes. While a faithful realization of the SYK model in condensed-matter systems may be involved, a striking similarity between the SYK model and the Hund-coupling-induced spin-freezing crossover in multiorbital Hubbard models has recently been pointed out. To further explore this connection, we study OTOCs for fermionic single-orbital and multiorbital Hubbard models, which are prototypical models for strongly correlated electrons in solids. We introduce an imaginary-time four-point correlation function with an appropriate time ordering, which by means of the spectral representation and the out-of-time-order fluctuation-dissipation theorem can be analytically continued to real-time OTOCs. Based on this approach, we numerically evaluate real-time OTOCs for Hubbard models in the thermodynamic limit, using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with a numerically exact continuous-time Monte Carlo impurity solver. The results for the single-orbital model show that a certain spin-related OTOC captures local moment formation in the vicinity of the metal-insulator transition, while the self-energy does not show SYK-type non-Fermi-liquid behavior. On the other hand, for the two- and three-orbital models with nonzero Hund coupling we find that the OTOC exhibits a rapid damping at short times and an approximate power-law decay at longer times in the spin-freezing crossover regime characterized by fluctuating local moments and a non-Fermi-liquid self-energy $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Sigma}}(\ensuremath{\omega})\ensuremath{\sim}\sqrt{\ensuremath{\omega}}$. These results are in a good agreement with the behavior of the SYK model, providing firm evidence for the close relation between the spin-freezing crossover physics of multiorbital Hubbard models and the SYK strange metal.

Proposal of realizing the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model from a Kitaev Spin Chain

Zuo, Han-yuan, Zheng-Xin Liu

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is zero-dimensional model simulating quantum chaos using interacting Majorana fermions.Previously proposals have been made to realize the SYK model in fermionic systems that can support majorana zero modes. In this work, we simulate the SYK model in a Kitaev spin chain, where zero modes also exist in the ground state from the fermionic representation of spins. By adding other interactions as perturbations, we lift the degenerate majorana zero modes and obatin an effective SYK interactions. Although the majorana fermions are nonlocal in forms of spin operators, we show that the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) of the majorana fermions can be approximately simulated in forms of spin operators. Our proposal sheds light in simulating the fermonic SKY model and the related physics in purely bosonic systems.

Creating and probing the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev model with ultracold gases: Towards experimental studies of quantum gravity

Ippei Danshita, Masanori Hanada, Masaki Tezuka

We suggest that the holographic principle, combined with recent technological advances in atomic, molecular, and optical physics, can lead to experimental studies of quantum gravity. As a specific example, we consider the Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model, which consists of spin-polarized fermions with an all-to-all complex random two-body hopping and has been conjectured to be dual to a certain quantum-gravitational system. Achieving low-temperature states of the SYK model is interpreted as a realization of a stringy black hole, provided that the holographic duality is true. We introduce a variant of the SYK model, in which the random two-body hopping is real. This model is equivalent to the original SYK model in the large-|$N$| limit. We show that this model can be created in principle by confining ultracold fermionic atoms into optical lattices and coupling two atoms with molecular states via photo-association lasers. This development serves as an important first step towards an experimental realization of such systems dual to quantum black holes. We also show how to measure out-of-time-order correlation functions of the SYK model, which allow for identifying the maximally chaotic property of the black hole.

Disorder-free Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models: Integrability and a precursor of chaos

Soshun Ozaki, Hosho Katsura

We introduce two disorder-free variants of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, demonstrate their integrability, and study their static and dynamical properties. Unlike diagrammatic techniques, the integrability of these models allows us to obtain dynamical correlation functions even when the number of Majorana fermions is finite. From the solutions, we find that out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) in these models exhibit exponential growth at early times, resembling that of many-body quantum chaotic systems, such as those with disorder or external kick terms, despite their large N behavior differing from that of typical chaotic systems. Conversely, our analysis shows no evidence of random-matrix behavior in level spacing statistics or the spectral form factor. Our findings illustrate that the clean versions of the SYK models represent simple but nontrivial examples of disorder-free quantum many-body systems displaying chaoslike behavior of OTOCs.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and beyond: Window into non-Fermi liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury, Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet +1 more

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a solvable model of a many-body quantum system that has stimulated interest in both condensed matter physics and quantum gravity. This review focuses on the insights provided by the SYK model, which has no quasiparticle excitations, into the physics of Planckian non-Fermi-liquid metals. This is discussed for a range of strongly correlated models and in relation to experiments on strongly correlated materials. Also included is a discussion of recent developments regarding the connections between the SYK model and the quantum theory of black holes.
