Abstract

We introduce a novel analytical approach for studying free-fermion (XX) chains with smoothly varying, site-dependent hoppings and magnetic fields. Building on a discrete WKB-like approximation applied directly to the recurrence relation for the single-particle eigenfunctions, we derive a closed-form expression for the local fermion density profile as a function of the Fermi energy, which is valid for arbitrary fillings, hopping amplitudes and magnetic fields. This formula reproduces the depletion and saturation effects observed in previous studies of inhomogeneous free-fermion chains, and provides a theoretical framework to understand entanglement entropy suppression in these models. We demonstrate the accuracy of our asymptotic formula in several chains with different hopping and magnetic field profiles. Our findings are thus the first step towards an analytical treatment of entanglement in free-fermion chains beyond the reach of conventional field-theoretic techniques.

Discrete WKB approach to density profiles in inhomogeneous two-band free-fermion chains

Federico Finkel, Artemio González-López, Martín Zapata

We extend the discrete WKB method to one-dimensional bipartite tight-binding chains of free fermions with slowly varying hopping amplitudes and on-site potentials. We focus on the inhomogeneous Rice-Mele model, suggesting possible experimental realizations thereof in optical superlattices. We derive explicit semiclassical expressions for the single-particle wave functions and density of states, as well as the sublattice-resolved local particle densities and filling fraction at arbitrary Fermi energy. In particular, we show that the WKB density profiles agree with those obtained from the local-density approximation. We analyze the spatial dependence of the local band edges and its consequences for the global spectral structure, and clarify the role played by the phase-space topology in determining the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions. Finally, we illustrate our results with two representative examples: a homogeneous Rice-Mele chain subject to a harmonic trap and a fully inhomogeneous chain containing a domain wall.

Depletion in fermionic chains with inhomogeneous hoppings

Begoña Mula, Nadir Samos Sáenz de Buruaga, Germán Sierra +2 more

The ground state of a free-fermionic chain with inhomogeneous hoppings at half-filling can be mapped into the Dirac vacuum on a static curved space-time, which presents exactly homogeneous occupations due to particle-hole symmetry. Yet, far from half-filling, we observe density modulations and depletion effects. The system can be described by a 1D Schr\"odinger equation on a different static space-time, with an effective potential, which accounts for the depleted regions. We provide a semiclassical expression for the single-particle modes and the density profiles associated to different hopping patterns and filling fractions. Moreover, we show that the depletion effects can be compensated for all filling fractions by adding a chemical potential proportional to the hoppings. Interestingly, we can obtain exactly the same density profiles on a homogeneous chain if we introduce a chemical potential, which is inverse to the hopping intensities, even though the ground state is different from the original one.

Entanglement entropy of inhomogeneous XX spin chains with algebraic interactions

Federico Finkel, Artemio González-López

Abstract We introduce a family of inhomogeneous XX spin chains whose squared couplings are a polynomial of degree at most four in the site index. We show how to obtain an asymptotic approximation for the Rényi entanglement entropy of all such chains in a constant magnetic field at half filling by exploiting their connection with the conformal field theory of a massless Dirac fermion in a suitably curved static background. We study the above approximation for three particular chains in the family, two of them related to well-known quasi-exactly solvable quantum models on the line and the third one to classical Krawtchouk polynomials, finding an excellent agreement with the exact value obtained numerically when the Rényi parameter α is less than one. When α ≥ 1 we find parity oscillations, as expected from the homogeneous case, and show that they are very accurately reproduced by a modification of the Fagotti-Calabrese formula. We have also analyzed the asymptotic behavior of the Rényi entanglement entropy in the non-standard situation of arbitrary filling and/or inhomogeneous magnetic field. Our numerical results show that in this case a block of spins at each end of the chain becomes disentangled from the rest. Moreover, the asymptotic approximation for the case of half filling and constant magnetic field, when suitably rescaled to the region of non-vanishing entropy, provides a rough approximation to the entanglement entropy also in this general case.

Entanglement Hamiltonian and orthogonal polynomials

Pierre-Antoine Bernard, Riccarda Bonsignori, Viktor Eisler +2 more

We study the entanglement Hamiltonian for free-fermion chains with a particular form of inhomogeneity. The hopping amplitudes and chemical potentials are chosen such that the single-particle eigenstates are related to discrete orthogonal polynomials of the Askey scheme. Due to the bispectral properties of these functions, one can construct an operator which commutes exactly with the entanglement Hamiltonian and corresponds to a linear or parabolic deformation of the physical one. We show that this deformation is interpreted as a local inverse temperature and can be obtained in the continuum limit via methods of conformal field theory. Using this prediction, the properly rescaled eigenvalues of the commuting operator are found to provide a very good approximation of the entanglement spectrum and entropy.

Domain-wall melting and entanglement in free-fermion chains with a band structure

Viktor Eisler

We study the melting of a domain wall in free-fermion chains, where the periodic variation of the hopping amplitudes gives rise to a band structure. It is shown that the entanglement grows logarithmically in time, and the prefactor is proportional to the number of filled bands in the initial state. For a dimerized chain the particle density and current are found to have the same expressions as in the homogeneous case, up to a rescaling of the velocity. The universal contribution to the entropy profile is then doubled, while the non-universal part can be extracted numerically from block-Toeplitz matrices.

Entanglement entropy of two disjoint intervals separated by one spin in a chain of free fermion*

L Brightmore, G P Gehér, Alexander Rudol'fovich Its +4 more

Abstract We calculate the entanglement entropy of a non-contiguous subsystem of a chain of free fermions. The starting point is a formula suggested by Jin and Korepin, arXiv: 1104.1004 , for the reduced density of states of two disjoint intervals with lattice sites P = {1, 2, …, m} ∪ {2m + 1, 2m + 2, …, 3m}, which applies to this model. As a first step in the asymptotic analysis of this system, we consider its simplification to two disjoint intervals separated just by one site, and we rigorously calculate the mutual information between these two blocks and the rest of the chain. In order to compute the entropy we need to study the asymptotic behaviour of an inverse Toeplitz matrix with Fisher–Hartwig symbol using the the Riemann–Hilbert method.
