Abstract

Resonant parametric modulation is a major tool of studying magnetic systems. For a spin-1/2 chain in a strong magnetic field, the resulting excitations can be mapped on fermionic excitations in the Kitaev chain. We show that the response to turning on the modulation reveals dynamical bulk aspects of the nontrivial topology of the closed chain. In the topological regime, depending on the turn-on rate, the system displays an absence of frequency dispersion of the time-averaged magnetization and an absence or a suppression of its spatial correlations near resonance. The transition between the topological and trivial regimes is controlled by the modulation frequency.

Topological nature of magnetization plateaus in periodically modulated quantum spin chains

Haiping Hu, Chen Cheng, Zhihao Xu +2 more

We unveil nontrivial topological properties of zero-temperature magnetization plateau states in periodically modulated quantum spin chains under a uniform magnetic field. As positions of plateaus are uniquely determined by the modulation period of exchange couplings, we find that the topologically nontrivial plateau state can be characterized by a nonzero integer Chern number and has nontrivial edge excitations. Our study clarifies the topological origin of the well-known phenomena of quantized magnetization plateaus in one-dimensional quantum spin systems and relates the plateau state to the correlated topological insulator.

Parametric pumping of the two-dimensional quantum spin liquid

Andrei A. Zvyagin

With the help of the exact solution of the Kitaev model the parametric pumping of the two-dimensional quantum spin liquid under the action of the ac magnetic field is studied. In the dynamical regime the field produces oscillations of the magnetization with the field's frequency, modulated by the Rabi-like oscillations. In the steady-state regime, the Rabi-like oscillations are damped. The absorption of the ac field by the Kitaev spin model is finite and manifests resonance features. Such a behavior is generic for quantum spin liquids with fermionic excitations, and it is different from the linear spin-wave response of magnetically ordered systems to such a parametric pumping.

Observation of Topological Magnon Insulator States in a Superconducting Circuit

Weizhou Cai, J. Han, Feng Mei +9 more

Searching topological states in artificial systems has recently become a rapidly growing field of research. Meanwhile, significant experimental progress on observing topological phenomena has been made in superconducting circuits. However, topological insulator states have not yet been reported in this system. Here, for the first time, we experimentally realize a tunable dimerized spin chain model and observe the topological magnon insulator states in a superconducting qubit chain. Via parametric modulations of the qubit frequencies, we show that the qubit chain can be flexibly tuned into topologically trivial or nontrivial magnon insulator states. Based on monitoring the quantum dynamics of a single-qubit excitation in the chain, we not only measure the topological winding numbers, but also observe the topological magnon edge and defect states. Our experiment exhibits the great potential of tunable superconducting qubit chain as a versatile platform for exploring noninteracting and interacting symmetry-protected topological states.

Spin dynamics of magnetic resonance with parametric modulation in a potassium vapor cell

Rui Zhang, Zhiguo Wang, Xiang Peng +3 more

A typical magnetic-resonance scheme employs a static bias magnetic field and an orthogonal driving magnetic field oscillating at the Larmor frequency, at which the atomic polarization precesses around the static magnetic field. Here we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally the variations of the resonance condition and the spin precession dynamics resulting from the parametric modulation of the bias field. We show that the driving magnetic field with the frequency detuned by different harmonics of the parametric modulation frequency can lead to resonance as well. Also, a series of frequency sidebands centered at the driving frequency and spaced by the parametric modulation frequency can be observed in the precession of the atomic polarization. We further show that the resonant amplitudes of the sidebands can be controlled by varying the ratio between the amplitude and the frequency of the parametric modulation. These effects could be used in different atomic magnetometry applications.

Dynamical Phase Transitions in Periodically Driving 1D Ising Model

Yuanyuan Cheng, Yuxia Zhang, Tianhui Qiu +2 more

This work investigates dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs) in a one-dimensional Ising model subjected to a periodically modulated transverse field. In contrast to sudden quenches, we demonstrate that a DQPT can be induced in two distinct ways. First, when the system remains within a given phase--ferromagnetic (FM) or paramagnetic (PM), a resonant periodic drive can trigger a DQPTs when its frequency matches the energy-level transition of the system. This DQPT is intimately connected to the emergence of Floquet topological phases. The timescale for the transition is governed by the perturbation strength $λ'$, the critical mode $k_c$, and its energy gap $Δ_{k_c}$, following the scaling relation $τ\proptoΔ_{k_c}λ'^{-1}\csc k_c$. Second, for drives across the critical point between the FM and PM phases, low frequencies can always induce DQPT, regardless of resonance. This behavior stems from the degeneracy of the energy-level at the critical point, which ensures that any drive with a frequency lower than the system's intrinsic transition frequency will inevitably excite the system. However, in the high-frequency regime, such excitation will be strongly suppressed, thereby inhibiting the occurrence of DQPTs. This study provides deeper insight into the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum spin chains.

Fractional excitations in Kitaev quasi-one-dimensional chain

Ritwika Majumder

The Kitaev honeycomb model has attracted significant interest due to its quantum spin liquid ground state, fractionalized Majorana excitations, and topological properties. Motivated by these features, we introduce a quasi-one-dimensional Kitaev-like spin chain derived from a truncated honeycomb geometry. The resulting Majorana band structure contains both dispersive and flat bands, with a gap closing at a critical anisotropy that separates trivial and chiral topological phases. Under open boundary conditions, the topological regime hosts zero-energy edge modes protected by chiral symmetry, placing the system in the BDI symmetry class with a quantized winding number. In the excited spectrum, localized plaquette modes emerge near zero energy and can be tuned by introducing domains of negative plaquettes. The dynamical spin correlation function reveals broad continua associated with fractionalized excitations, together with characteristic low-energy spectral weight from edge Majorana modes. These features distinguish the present system from conventional Heisenberg spin chains and provide experimentally relevant fingerprints of chiral topological order. Our model thus establishes a conceptual bridge between the two-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid and Kitaev's one-dimensional quantum wire.
