Abstract

In light of the dynamical-systems approach to entropy production in repeated quantum measurements, proposed and illustrated in Commun. Math. Phys. 357, 77-123 (2018) [arXiv:1607.00162] and J. Stat. Phys. 182, 44 (2021) [arXiv:2012.03885], we characterize the KMS quantum detailed balance condition for quantum channels via time-reversal invariance and the vanishing of the entropy production for the associated informationally complete quantum instruments.

On entropy production of repeated quantum measurements II. Examples

Tristan Benoist, Noé Cuneo, Jakšić, Vojkan +1 more

We illustrate the mathematical theory of entropy production in repeated quantum measurement processes developed in a previous work by studying examples of quantum instruments displaying various interesting phenomena and singularities. We emphasize the role of the thermodynamic formalism, and give many examples of quantum instruments whose resulting probability measures on the space of infinite sequences of outcomes (shift space) do not have the (weak) Gibbs property. We also discuss physically relevant examples where the entropy production rate satisfies a large deviation principle but fails to obey the central limit theorem and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Throughout the analysis, we explore the connections with other, a priori unrelated topics like functions of Markov chains, hidden Markov models, matrix products and number theory.

Interplay between Standard Quantum Detailed Balance and Thermodynamically Consistent Entropy Production

Xin-Hai Tong, Kohei Yoshimura, Tan Van Vu +1 more

We demonstrate that, for a quantum Markovian semigroup on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space, if it satisfies the standard quantum detailed balance condition, its generator admits a special representation that yields a vanishing entropy production rate. Conversely, if the generator admits a special representation adhering to the condition of thermodynamic consistency and leading to a vanishing entropy production rate, then the corresponding quantum Markovian semigroup must satisfy the standard quantum detailed balance condition. In this context, we adopt the definition of entropy production rate that is motivated by the physics literature and standard for thermodynamically consistent Lindbladians.

Entropy Production for Quantum Markov Semigroups

F. Fagnola, Rolando Rebolledo

An invariant state of a quantum Markov semigroup is an equilibrium state if it satisfies a quantum detailed balance condition. In this paper, we introduce a notion of entropy production for faithful normal invariant states of a quantum Markov semigroup on B(h) as a numerical index measuring "how much far" they are from equilibrium. The entropy production is defined as the derivative of the relative entropy of the one-step forward and backward evolution in analogy with the classical probabilistic concept. We prove an explicit trace formula expressing the entropy production in terms of the completely positive part of the generator of a norm continuous quantum Markov semigroup showing that it turns out to be zero if and only if a standard quantum detailed balance condition holds.

Entropy Production and Detailed Balance for a Class of Quantum Markov Semigroups

Franco Fagnola, Rolando Rebolledo

We give an explicit entropy production formula for a class of quantum Markov semigroups, arising in the weak coupling limit of a system coupled with reservoirs, whose generators [Formula: see text] are sums of other generators [Formula: see text] associated with positive Bohr frequencies [Formula: see text] of the system. As a consequence, we show that any such semigroup satisfies the quantum detailed balance condition with respect to an invariant state if and only if all semigroups generated by each [Formula: see text] do so with respect to the same invariant state.

Quantum entropy production rate of quantum markov semigroups

Jorge Bolaños

This paper explores various perspectives on Quantum Detailed Balance and the Entropy Production Rate within the framework of Quantum Markov Semigroups. Using the generators of these semigroups, formulated according to the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad (GKSL) theorem, and their respective adjoints, we identify two contrasting families of Quantum Markov Semigroups. The first family demonstrates a situation where the condition for Quantum Detailed Balance is violated, yet the entropy production rate is zero. In contrast, the second family reveals cases where the quantum entropy production rate aligns with an interpretation of Quantum Detailed Balance. These findings provide insights into the relationship between quantum detailed balance and entropy production rate in open systems.

Entropy of quantum channel in the theory of quantum information

Wojciech Roga

Quantum channels, also called quantum operations, are linear, trace preserving and completely positive transformations in the space of quantum states. Such operations describe discrete time evolution of an open quantum system interacting with an environment. The thesis contains an analysis of properties of quantum channels and different entropies used to quantify the decoherence introduced into the system by a given operation. Part I of the thesis provides a general introduction to the subject. In Part II, the action of a quantum channel is treated as a process of preparation of a quantum ensemble. The Holevo information associated with this ensemble is shown to be bounded by the entropy exchanged during the preparation process between the initial state and the environment. A relation between the Holevo information and the entropy of an auxiliary matrix consisting of square root fidelities between the elements of the ensemble is proved in some special cases. Weaker bounds on the Holevo information are also established. The entropy of a channel, also called the map entropy, is defined as the entropy of the state corresponding to the channel by the Jamiolkowski isomorphism. In Part III of the thesis, the additivity of the entropy of a channel is proved. The minimal output entropy, which is difficult to compute, is estimated by an entropy of a channel which is much easier to obtain. A class of quantum channels is specified, for which additivity of channel capacity is conjectured. The last part of the thesis contains characterization of Davies channels, which correspond to an interaction of a state with a thermal reservoir in the week coupling limit, under the condition of quantum detailed balance and independence of rotational and dissipative evolutions. The Davies channels are characterized for one-qubit and one-qutrit systems.
