Abstract

We consider coupled matter-wave bright solitons in spatial coherence spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (SOC-BECs) in optical and Rabi-coupling lattice (RL) potentials and find an effective potential for separation of coupled matter-wave solitons. We show that the Rabi lattice significantly affects the potential near the region of overlap between the solitons. We study the effects of Rabi lattice on the dynamics of solitons for different initial overlaps and show that the dynamics is controlled by the interplay between the Rabi lattice and inter-component interaction. We investigate that, by tuning the Rabi lattice strength, one can realize localize, periodic and splitting dynamics of the total density profile of the coupled solitons.

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

Golam Ali Sekh, B. Talukdar

The stationary bright solitons that appear in the ground state of the spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate (SOC-BEC) exhibit nodes. We consider SOC-BEC in combined linear and nonlinear optical lattices and study their effects on the matter-wave bright soliton and find that the parameters of the nonlinear lattice or atomic scattering length can be judiciously manipulated to have useful control over the nodes of the soliton. It is seen that the soliton with large number of nodes is less stable compared to one having fewer number of nodes. We infer that that the synthetic spin-orbit coupling induces instability in the ordinary matter-wave soliton.

Effective spin dynamics of spin-orbit coupled matter-wave solitons in optical lattices

Kajal Krishna Dey, Golam Ali Sekh

Abstract We consider matter–wave solitons in spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates embedded in an optical lattice and study the dynamics of the soliton within the framework of Gross–Pitaevskii equations. We express spin components of the soliton pair in terms of nonlinear Bloch equations and investigate the effective spin dynamics. It is seen that the effective magnetic field that appears in the Bloch equation is affected by optical lattices, and thus the optical lattice influences the precessional frequency of the spin components. We make use of numerical approaches to investigate the dynamical behavior of density profiles and center-of-mass of the soliton pair in the presence of the optical lattice. It is shown that the spin density is periodically varying due to flipping of spinors between the two states. The amplitude of spin-flipping oscillation increases with lattice strength. We find that the system can also exhibit interesting nonlinear behavior for chosen values of parameters. We present a fixed point analysis to study the effects of optical lattices on the nonlinear dynamics of the spin components. It is seen that the optical lattice can act as a control parameter to change the dynamical behavior of the spin components from periodic to chaotic.

Tunable ground-state solitons in spin–orbit coupling Bose–Einstein condensates in the presence of optical lattices

Properties of the ground-state solitons, which exist in the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) Bose–Einstein condensates (BEC) in the presence of optical lattices, are presented. Results show that several system parameters, such as SOC strength, lattice depth, and lattice frequency, have important influences on properties of ground state solitons in SOC BEC. By controlling these parameters, structure and spin polarization of the ground-state solitons can be effectively tuned, so manipulation of atoms may be realized.

Matter-Wave Bright Solitons in Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study matter-wave bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive interactions. We use a multiscale expansion method to identify solution families for chemical potentials in the semi-infinite gap of the linear energy spectrum. Depending on the linear and spin-orbit coupling strengths, the solitons may present either a sech2-shaped or a modulated density profile reminiscent of the stripe phase of spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Our numerical results are in excellent agreement with our analytical findings and demonstrate the potential robustness of solitons for experimentally relevant conditions.

Localization and spin dynamics of spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates in deep optical lattices

Ai-Xia Zhang, Xiao-Wen Hu, Yan-Fang Jiang +4 more

We analytically and numerically discuss the dynamics of two pseudospin components Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in deep optical lattices. Rich localized phenomena, such as breathers, solitons, self-trapping, and diffusion, are revealed and strongly depend on the strength of the atomic interaction, SOC, Raman detuning, and the spin polarization (i.e., the initial population difference of atoms between the two pseudospin components of BECs). The critical conditions for the transition of localized states are derived analytically. Based on the critical conditions, the detailed dynamical phase diagram describing the different dynamical regimes is derived. When the Raman detuning satisfies a critical condition, localized states with a fixed initial spin polarization can be observed. When the critical condition is not satisfied, we use two quenching methods, i.e., suddenly and linearly quenching Raman detuning from the soliton or breather state, to discuss the spin dynamics, phase transition, and wave packet dynamics by numerical simulation. The sudden quenching results in a damped oscillation of spin polarization and transforms the system to a new polarized state. Interestingly, the linear quenching of Raman detuning induces a controllable phase transition from an unpolarized phase to an expected polarized phase, while the soliton or breather dynamics is maintained.

Effects of linear Zeeman splitting on the dynamics of bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Lin Wen, Yi Liang, Jing Zhou +4 more

Solitons as self-supported solitary waves are one of the most fundamental objects in nonlinear science. With the realization of Bose-Einstein condensate, matter-wave solitons have aroused enormous interest due to their potential applications in atomic transport and atomic interferometer. In recent years, the artificial spin-orbit coupling has been realized in ultracold atoms, thus providing a new platform to study the nonlinear matter wave solitons under a gauge field, and a variety of novel soliton phenomena have been successively predicted. In this paper, we analyze the effects of linear Zeeman splitting on the dynamics of bright-bright solitons in spin-orbit coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, via the variational approximation and the numerical simulation of Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations. For the SU(2) spin-rotational invariant attractive atomic interaction in a uniform case without external trap, we take a hyperbolic secant function as the variational Ansatz for bright soliton in variational approximation, and derive the Euler-Lagrange equations describing the evolution of the Ansatz parameters. By solving the time-independent Euler-Lagrange equations, we find two stationary solitons each with a finite momentum for a weak spin-orbit coupling due to the linear Zeeman splitting. Linearizing the Euler-Lagrange equations around these stationary solitons, we further obtain a zero-energy Goldstone mode and an oscillation mode with frequency related to linear Zeeman splitting: the former indicates that the continuous translational symmetry of the stationary solitons will be broken under a perturbation, and the later shows that the stationary solitons will oscillate under a perturbation. Furthermore, by solving the time-dependent Euler-Lagrange equations, we also obtain the exact full dynamical solutions of Ansatz parameters, and observe that the linear Zeeman splitting affects the period and velocity of soliton's oscillation and linear motion, which may provide a new method to control the dynamics of solitons. All the variational calculations are also confirmed directly by the numerical simulation of GP equations.
