Abstract

We study the correlation function of the one-dimensional Ising model at fixed magnetization. Focusing on the scaling limit close to the zero-temperature fixed point, we show that this correlation function, in momentum space, exhibits surprising oscillations as a function of the magnetization. We show that these oscillations have a period inversely proportional to the momentum and give an interpretation in terms of domain walls. This is in sharp contrast with the behavior of the correlation function in constant magnetic fields and sheds light on recent results obtained by Monte Carlo simulations for the correlation functions of the critical two-dimensional Ising model at fixed magnetization.

One-dimensional random Ising ferromagnets and antiferromagnets

The spin-spin correlation function of a one-dimensional random Ising model decays in a manner inversely proportional to the square of the partition function of the part of the system between the spins. At low temperatures and strong coupling there are logarithmic corrections to the scaling power-law dependence of the correlation length on the magnetic field. The correlation of the boundary spins as a function of the system size is evaluated analytically and numerically. At low temperatures and strong coupling this function has a crossover between different behaviors and its Fourier transform oscillates with wave vector.

Theory of Toeplitz Determinants and the Spin Correlations of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model. I

Tai Tsun Wu

We study in detail the asymptotic behavior, for large separations, of the correlation between two spins in the case of the two-dimensional Ising model without magnetic field. In the limit of infinite separation, this correlation is equal to the square of the spontaneous magnetization per spin. This paper is devoted to answering the question how, for fixed temperature, the correlation approaches this limiting value. The investigation is restricted to the situation where the two spins under consideration lie on the same row of the two-dimensional lattice. There are three distinct cases where the fixed temperature is above, below, or equal to the critical temperature or the Curie temperature. In the first two cases, the limiting value is approached exponentially as a function of the separation, while at the critical temperature the correlation behaves asymptotically as the inverse fourth root of the separation. In this paper, we evaluate exactly the first four terms of the asymptotic expansion in the first case, the first three terms in the second case, and the coefficients of the terms proportional to the -\textonequarter{} and the $\ensuremath{-}\frac{9}{4}$ powers of the separation in the third case. All these results are obtained by first expressing the correlation as a Toeplitz determinant, and the method used is capable of giving in principle the entire asymptotic expansion for large classes of such determinants, when the size of the determinant approaches infinity. The explicit results for the two-dimensional Ising model also serve as an example where the prescription of summing the leading terms, or the most divergent terms, fails.

Spin-spin correlation functions for the two-dimensional Ising model: Exact theory in the scaling region

We compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions $〈{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0,0}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{M,N}〉$ for the two-dimensional Ising model on a square lattice in zero magnetic field for $T>{T}_{c}$ and $T<{T}_{c}$. We then analyze the correlation functions in the scaling limit $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c},{M}^{2}+{N}^{2}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ such that $(T\ensuremath{-}{T}_{c})$ is fixed. In this scaling limit $〈{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0,0}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{M,N}〉={R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{1}{4}}{F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)+{R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{5}{4}}{F}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)+o({R}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{5}{4}})$, where $t$ is the scaling variable $\frac{R}{\ensuremath{\xi}}$ and ${F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ and ${F}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ are the scaling functions ($\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length). We derive exact expressions for these scaling functions, in terms of a Painlev\'e function of the third kind and analyze both the small- and large-$t$ behavior. A table of values for ${F}_{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}(t)$ (good to ten significant digits) is also given. As an application we computer the coefficients ${C}_{0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ and ${C}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$ in the expansion ${k}_{B}T\ensuremath{\chi}(T)={C}_{0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{|1\ensuremath{-}\frac{{T}_{c}}{T}|}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{7}{4}}+{C}_{1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{|1\ensuremath{-}\frac{{T}_{c}}{T}|}^{\ensuremath{-}\frac{3}{4}}+O(1)$ of the zero-field susceptibility $\ensuremath{\chi}(T)$ as $T\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{T}_{c}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$.

Constraint effective action and critical correlation functions at fixed magnetization

Félix Rose, Adam Rançon, Ivan Balog

We present an extension of the functional renormalization group (FRG) framework developed to compute critical probability distributions of the order parameter to momentum-dependent observables. Focusing on the constraint effective action at fixed magnetization for the Ising universality class, we derive its exact flow equations and solve them at the second order of the derivative expansion (DE2). We solve these flow equations numerically for two- and three-dimensional systems, extract universal rate functions and momentum-dependent correlation functions, and benchmark them against Monte Carlo simulations. In three dimensions, we recover the rate function and accurately reproduce the first few Fourier modes of the constrained correlation function and demonstrate the convergence of the method. In two dimensions, the lowest-order approximations such as local potential approximation fail, and it is required to consider at least the DE2 to describe the critical point. Our results are in qualitative agreement with the numerics. We confirm the robustness of the FRG approach for calculating both zero- and finite-momentum critical observables at fixed magnetization.

The Ising chain constrained to an even or odd number of positive spins

Michael T. Gastner

We investigate the statistical mechanics of the periodic one-dimensional Ising chain when the number of positive spins is constrained to be either an even or an odd number. We calculate the partition function using a generalization of the transfer matrix method. On this basis, we derive the exact magnetization, susceptibility, internal energy, heat capacity and correlation function. We show that in general the constraints substantially slow down convergence to the thermodynamic limit. By taking the thermodynamic limit together with the limit of zero temperature and zero magnetic field, the constraints lead to new scaling functions and different probability distributions for the magnetization. We demonstrate how these results solve a stochastic version of the one-dimensional voter model.

Correlation Functions for the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

Robert Hecht

The energy-density---energy-density and energy-density---spin correlation functions are evaluated for the two-dimensional square Ising model. Results are obtained at zero magnetic field and near the critical point, i.e., for $\ensuremath{\epsilon}=(\frac{4J}{\mathrm{kT}})|(T\ensuremath{-}\frac{{T}_{c}}{{T}_{c}})|\ensuremath{\ll}1.$ The correlation functions are ${〈{E}_{R}{E}_{0}〉\ensuremath{-}{〈E〉}^{2},={(\frac{2J}{\ensuremath{\pi}})}^{2}{\ensuremath{\epsilon}}^{2}[{{K}_{1}}^{2}(\ensuremath{\epsilon}R)\ensuremath{-}{{K}_{0}}^{2}(\ensuremath{\epsilon}R)],}{〈{E}_{R}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{0}〉\ensuremath{-}〈E〉〈\ensuremath{\sigma}〉,=(\frac{2J}{\ensuremath{\pi}})\ensuremath{\epsilon}〈\ensuremath{\sigma}〉\ensuremath{\int}{2\ensuremath{\epsilon}R}^{\ensuremath{\infty}}\mathrm{ds} {s}^{\ensuremath{-}2}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}8},}$ where $R$ is the distance between the points in question and ${K}_{0}$ and ${K}_{1}$ are modified Bessel functions of the second kind. Very similar results hold if the coupling constants are different in the two directions. The above results agree in form with the structure predicted by the "scaling-law" approach.
