The Ising chain constrained to an even or odd number of positive spins

Abstract

We investigate the statistical mechanics of the periodic one-dimensional Ising chain when the number of positive spins is constrained to be either an even or an odd number. We calculate the partition function using a generalization of the transfer matrix method. On this basis, we derive the exact magnetization, susceptibility, internal energy, heat capacity and correlation function. We show that in general the constraints substantially slow down convergence to the thermodynamic limit. By taking the thermodynamic limit together with the limit of zero temperature and zero magnetic field, the constraints lead to new scaling functions and different probability distributions for the magnetization. We demonstrate how these results solve a stochastic version of the one-dimensional voter model.

Exact Solution and Correlation Functions of Generalized Double Ising Chains

Pavel Khrapov, Stepan Shchurenkov

In this paper the exact solution and correlation functions for a double-chain Ising model with multi-spin interactions and symmetric Hamiltonian density are obtained. The study employs the transfer matrix method to derive fundamental thermodynamic characteristics of the system. The main results include exact expressions for the partition function, free energy, internal energy, specific heat capacity, magnetization, susceptibility, and entropy in a strip of finite length and in the thermodynamic limit. The work provides explicit formulas for the eigenvalues and shows structure of eigenvectors of the transfer matrix. The expression for magnetization in the thermodynamic limit using components of normalized eigenvector corresponding to the maximum eigenvalue is obtained. A detailed analysis is conducted for a special case of interactions involving all kinds of two- and four-spin interactions. This gives the simplified formula for free energy, it is calculated using the root of quadratic equation. Using special relation between parameters the solution for gonihedric model on the plane is obtained. The research reveals properties of the system, including specific features of ground states and phase diagram characteristics. Particular attention is given to the behavior of physical quantities near frustration points and the investigation of spin correlation functions. Plots of physical characteristics, including inverse correlation length, illustrating the obtained results are constructed.

Open and Periodic Boundary Conditions in Statistical Mechanics: A Case Study of the Antiferromagnetic Ising Chain

Katarína Karľová, Jozef Strečka

The transfer-matrix method is employed to investigate a spin-1/2 Ising chain under open and periodic boundary conditions. It is demonstrated that finite-size Ising chains with antiferromagnetic coupling may exhibit significantly distinct magnetic behavior under open and periodic boundary conditions. While the open Ising chains display intriguing magnetic features regardless of the system size, mainly due to a specific contribution of boundary spins, the magnetic behavior of closed Ising chains depends basically on the number of spins. The closed Ising chains with an odd number of spins are subject to a geometric spin frustration leading to an additional plateau in the magnetization curve, which is naturally absent in the closed Ising chains with an even number of spins. Despite different microscopic origins, the magnetization curves of open and closed Ising chains with an odd number of spins exhibit an identical intermediate plateau, with only small quantitative differences appearing at moderate temperatures, which means that a geometric spin frustration of odd-membered rings is somewhat similar to the effect of open boundaries. The magnetization curves of the open Ising chains with an even number of spins differ drastically from those of the closed Ising chains due to the presence of an additional intermediate magnetization plateau. Furthermore, the initial susceptibility, inverse initial susceptibility, and susceptibility-temperature product are examined in detail as functions of temperature. These magnetic response functions demonstrate that the Curie constant and Weiss temperature represent fundamental characteristics of the magnetic system that are independent of the choice of boundary conditions.

A New Exact Method for Solving the Two-Dimensional Ising Model

S. Ranjbar, Gholamabbas Parsafar

We have used the two-dimensional Ising model with a limited number of rows, but with the coordination number of four for each site, to set up the transfer matrix for the model. From the solution of such a matrix, the exact thermodynamic properties have been obtained for the model with a definite number of rows, n . We have solved the matrix for n ≤ 7 and n ≤ 10 in the presence and absence of a magnetic field, respectively. On the basis of such solutions, we have proposed an analytical expression for the partition function of the model with any number of rows in the absence of a magnetic field. The proposed expression becomes more accurate when n is larger, in such a way that it becomes very accurate for n ≥ 8 and is exact for n → ∞. Our results show that the singularity of the specific heat occurs only for the model with infinite number of rows. In the presence of a magnetic field, the solution to the matrixes is too complicated to propose a general analytical expression for the partition function of the model with any number of rows. However, our exact solution for the model with n = 4, 5, 6, and 7 reveals an important point that such results are independent of n when the field−spin interaction energy is almost equal to or larger than that of the spin−spin interaction.

Investigation of Magnetic Properties of Spin 5/2 Ising Chain by Using Transfer Matrix Method

Mehmet Gökhan Şensoy, Mehmet Batı

A magnetic property of the one dimensional spin 5/2 Ising model under the magnetic field has been investigated by means of transfer matrix method. Thermodynamic response functions are also obtained for varying values of scaling temperature and scaling magnetic field. Entropy and heat capacity of the system were calculated by benefiting from the temperature dependencies of Helmholtz free energy. Our simulation results demonstrate that as the strength of the magnetic field is increased, heat capacity tend to shift to the relatively higher temperature regions, and these findings are consistent with previous results for the low spin values in one dimensional Ising systems.

Statistical Mechanics of Finite Ising Model

Chikao Kawabata, Masaki Takeuchi, Yukihiko Karaki

Partition function of finite Ising model (spin=1/2) was exactly obtained by a computer for three dimensional even lattice 4×4×2=32 with periodic boundary condition in the presence of a magnetic field. Specific heat was calculated as a function of temperature. The zeros of the partition functions of the complex temperature plane and magnetic field plane were investigated.

Exact Analytical Results for the 1D Ising Chain with Periodic Impurity Fields

Telfah, Malek, Obeidat, Abdalla

We present an exact analytical solution for the one-dimensional Ising model in the presence of an external magnetic field applied periodically to every $k$-th site. The problem is handled using the symmetrized transfer matrix approach, we derive a compact closed-form expression for the system's eigenvalues for arbitrary period $k$. From the resulting free energy, we obtain exact expressions for the magnetization and zero-field susceptibility. Explicit results are presented for $k = 1$, $k = 2$, and $k = 3$ which is considered a novel result. We further analyze the spin-spin correlation functions, deriving the correlation length and the set of position-dependent correlation strength prefactors, $A_{ij}$. The framework highlights how impurity spacing suppresses thermodynamic responses, with susceptibility scaling as $χ\sim β/ k$ for large $k$, offering insights into diluted magnetic systems and serving as a benchmark for quasiperiodic modulations. The correlation strengths exhibit a strong anisotropy, revealing a complex, non-local structure of spin fluctuations. These results provide a complete and rigorous benchmark for understanding the effects of periodic modulation in 1D systems.
