Abstract

We study a ferromagnetic XXZ Heisenberg model on a Lieb lattice. A set of exact eigenstates is constructed based on the restricted spectrum generating algebra (RSGA) when a resonant staggered magnetic field is applied. These states are identical to the eigenstates of a system of two coupled angular momenta. Furthermore, we find that the RSGA can be applied to other eigenstates of the Lieb lattice in an approximate manner. Numerical simulations reveal that there exist sets of eigenstates, which obey a quasi-RSGA. These states act as energy towers within the low-lying excited spectrum, indicating that they are quantum many-body scars.

Towers of Quantum Many-body Scars from Integrable Boundary States

Kazuyuki Sanada, Yuan Miao, Hosho Katsura

We construct several models with multiple quantum many-body scars (QMBS) using integrable boundary states (IBS). Specifically, we focus on the tilted Néel states, which are parametrized IBS for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain, and show that these states can be used to construct a tower of scar states. Our models exhibit periodic revival dynamics, showcasing a characteristic behavior of superpositions of QMBS. Furthermore, the tower of QMBS found in this study possesses a restricted spectrum generating algebra (RSGA) structure, indicating that QMBS are equally spaced in energy. This approach can be extended to two-dimensional models, which can be decomposed into an array of one-dimensional models. In this case, the tilted Néel states again serve as parent states for multiple scar states. These states demonstrate low entanglement entropy, marking them as exact scar states. Notably, their entanglement entropy adheres to the sub-volume law, further solidifying the nonthermal properties of QMBS. Our results provide novel insights into constructing QMBS using IBS, thereby illuminating the connection between QMBS and integrable models.

Exact Valence-Bond Solid Scars in the Square-Lattice Heisenberg Model

David D. Dai

We show that the spin-s square-lattice Heisenberg model has exact many-body scars. These scars are simple valence-bond solids with exactly zero energy, and they exist in even-by-even systems and ladders of width 2. Ladders have additional scars corresponding to injecting one or two magnons on top of a parent valence-bond solid scar. These scars have a remarkably simple physical origin based only the angular momentum algebra and cancellations from spin-antialignment within a valence bond. Our comprehensive exact diagonalization calculations suggest that our valence-bond solids exhaust all exact eigenstates in the Heisenberg model except for few-magnon states near the top of the spectrum. Our scars are interesting because they are not part of a tower, have area-law entanglement, break translation symmetry, and exist for Heisenberg models of all spin.

Asymptotic Quantum Many-Body Scars

Lorenzo Gotta, Sanjay Moudgalya, Leonardo Mazza

We consider a quantum lattice spin model featuring exact quasiparticle towers of eigenstates with low entanglement at finite size, known as quantum many-body scars (QMBS). We show that the states in the neighboring part of the energy spectrum can be superposed to construct entire families of low-entanglement states whose energy variance decreases asymptotically to zero as the lattice size is increased. As a consequence, they have a relaxation time that diverges in the thermodynamic limit, and therefore exhibit the typical behavior of exact QMBS, although they are not exact eigenstates of the Hamiltonian for any finite size. We refer to such states as asymptotic QMBS. These states are orthogonal to any exact QMBS at any finite size, and their existence shows that the presence of an exact QMBS leaves important signatures of nonthermalness in the rest of the spectrum; therefore, QMBS-like phenomena can hide in what is typically considered the thermal part of the spectrum. We support our study using numerical simulations in the spin-1 XY model, a paradigmatic model for QMBS, and we conclude by presenting a weak perturbation of the model that destroys the exact QMBS while keeping the asymptotic QMBS.

Quantum Many-Body Scars, Magnon-Pair Condensation, and Hilbert Space Fragmentation in an Anisotropic Heisenberg Model

J. Y. Liu-Sun, Z. Song

We investigate a spin-$1/2$ anisotropic Heisenberg model on a lattice consisting of two identical bipartite sublattices. A family of exact eigenstates generated by the restricted spectrum generating algebra (RSGA) constitutes quantum many-body scar states, characterized by subextensive entanglement entropy and supporting. These scar states are magnon-pair condensates exhibiting off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). At the resonance point of the inter-sublattice interaction, the model exactly maps onto a mixed spin-$1$ and spin-$0$ XY model on a bipartite lattice, which decomposes into independent sub-Hamiltonians labeled by all possible spin configurations. Each spin-$0$ particle is dynamically isolated from its neighbors and acts as a kinetic constraint, giving rise to emergent Hilbert space fragmentation (HSF). Our work establishes an exactly solvable platform in which quantum many-body scars, magnon-pair condensation exhibiting off-diagonal long-range order, and Hilbert space fragmentation naturally coexist.

η -pairing in Hubbard models: From spectrum generating algebras to quantum many-body scars

Sanjay Moudgalya, Nicolas Regnault, Bogdan Andrei Bernevig

We revisit the $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing states in Hubbard models and explore their connections to quantum many-body scars to discover a universal scars mechanism. $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing occurs due to an algebraic structure known as a spectrum generating algebra (SGA), giving rise to equally spaced towers of eigenstates in the spectrum. We generalize the original $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing construction and show that several Hubbard-like models on arbitrary graphs exhibit SGAs, including ones with disorder and spin-orbit coupling. We further define a restricted spectrum generating algebra (RSGA) and give examples of perturbations to the Hubbard-like models that preserve an equally spaced tower of the original model as eigenstates. The states of the surviving tower exhibit a subthermal entanglement entropy, and we analytically obtain parameter regimes for which they lie in the bulk of the spectrum, showing that they are exact quantum many-body scars. The RSGA framework also explains the equally spaced towers of eigenstates in several well-known models of quantum scars, including the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model.

Locality forces equal energy spacing of quantum many-body scar towers

Nicholas O'Dea, Lei Gioia, Sanjay Moudgalya +1 more

Quantum many-body scars are non-thermal eigenstates embedded in the spectra of otherwise non-integrable Hamiltonians. Paradigmatic examples often appear as quasiparticle towers of states, such as the maximally ferromagnetic spin-1/2 states, also known as Dicke states. A distinguishing feature of quantum many-body scars is that they admit multiple local "parent" Hamiltonians for which they are exact eigenstates. In this work, we show that the locality of such parent Hamiltonians strongly constrains the relative placement of these states within the energy spectrum. In particular, we prove that if the full set of Dicke states are exact eigenstates of an extensive local Hamiltonian, then their energies must necessarily be equally spaced. Our proof builds on recent results concerning parent Hamiltonians of the $W$ state, together with general algebraic structures underlying such quasiparticle towers. We further demonstrate that this equal spacing property extends to local Hamiltonians defined on arbitrary bounded-degree graphs, including regular lattices in any spatial dimension and expander graphs. Hamiltonians with $k$-local interactions and a bounded number of interaction terms per site are also encompassed by our proof. On the same classes of graphs, we additionally establish equal spacing for towers constructed from multi-site quasiparticles on top of product states. For the towers considered here, an immediate corollary of the equal spacing property is that any state initialized entirely within the quantum many-body scar manifold exhibits completely frozen entanglement dynamics under any local Hamiltonian for which those scars are exact eigenstates. Overall, our results reveal a stringent interplay between locality and the structure of quantum many-body scars.
