Abstract

We investigate the dual-frequency Doppler-free resonance in the D1 line of alkali-metal atoms for any accessible value of the nuclear spin I. The consideration is performed using the symmetries of the dipole operator and the basis, where the quantization axis is directed along the polarization of the one of optical waves. We show that there is the absence of the optical pumping in the scheme with parallel polarizations for the center of the crossover, resulting in its smallest width. Secondly, the growth in the absorption for the center of the peak with Fe=I-1/2 and the decrease of its width with the two-photon detuning in the case of~orthogonal polarizations is explained. Particular attention is paid to the special case of I=3/2, where this effect is the most pronounced. The experiment with 87Rb, 85Rb, and 133Cs atoms is in agreement with the analysis.

Double-Frequency Doppler-Free Spectroscopy of 87Rb Atoms

We investigate Doppler-free absorption lines induced by counter-propagating polychromatic optical fields in the D1 line of 87Rb atoms. Cases of orthogonal and parallel polarizations are considered. The resonance associated with Fe = 1 demonstrates unusual behaviour with two-photon detuning: the amplitude grows while the width becomes smaller. The crossover resonance involving transitions to both sublevels Fe = 1, 2 of the excited state is more pronounced at parallel polarizations than at orthogonal and has smaller width compared to the lines corresponding to atomic transitions. A qualitative explanation of experimentally observed features is given.

Single-frequency inverted Doppler-free resonance as a platform for chip-scale optical clock

Eugene A. Tsygankov, Dmitry S. Chuchelov, Maria I. Vaskovskaya +3 more

We report on the possibility to obtain a high-quality inverted Doppler-free resonance in D1 line of alkali-metal atoms in the single-frequency regime. The counter-propagating optical fields with linear and mutually orthogonal polarizations and the transition Fg=I+1/2 --> Fe=I-1/2 are proposed to the use. We establish the best possible nuclear spin value and the corresponding atomic isotope for this regime. Our experiment demonstrates that the resonance contrast-to-width ratio in the single-frequency regime is practically the same as in the dual-frequency regime, which simplifies the optical module to be used in compact optical clocks. The achieved short-term frequency stability is 3*10^(-13) at 1 s, which is comparable to results that can be obtained with the dual-frequency technique.

Doppler-free satellites of resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption on the D 2 lines of alkali metals

Armen D. Sargsyan, David G. Sarkisyan, David Staedter +1 more

The peculiarities of intra-Doppler structures that are observed in the atomic absorption spectrum of alkali metals with the help of two independent lasers have been studied. These structures accompany ultranarrow coherent resonances of electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption. With the D 2 line of rubidium taken as an example, it is shown that, in the scheme of unidirectional waves, the maximum number of satellite resonances caused by optical pumping selective with respect to the atomic velocity is equal to seven, while only six resonances are observed in the traditional scheme of saturated absorption with counterpropagating waves of the same frequency. The spectral position of the resonances and their polarity depend on the frequency of the saturating radiation, while their number and relative amplitude depend also on the experimental geometry. These features are of general character and should show themselves in the absorption spectrum on the D 2 lines of all alkali metals. An explanation of these features is given. The calculated spectral separations between the resonances are compared to the experimental ones, and their possible application is discussed.

Dual-frequency Doppler-free crossover resonance with suppressed magnetic-field sensitivity for compact optical frequency standards

Dmitry S. Chuchelov, Maria I. Vaskovskaya, Eugene A. Tsygankov +3 more

We report the observation and characterization of a high-contrast dual-frequency Doppler-free ground-state crossover resonance in the D1 line of 87Rb.The crossover appears at a two-photon detuning exceeding the natural linewidth of the excited state and is formed by the optical pumping effect. Unlike the previously proposed resonance at zero two-photon detuning, which we show becomes sensitive to magnetic-field fluctuations due to residual ellipticity of the optical fields-resulting in frequency shifts and profile asymmetry-the crossover resonance is largely immune to this effect. Our theoretical analysis attributes the observed sensitivity to the dispersive contribution of ground-state coherences to absorption. Stability measurements under magnetic-field fluctuations demonstrate that using the crossover resonance provides more than an order-of-magnitude improvement, making it a promising reference for frequency stabilization in compact, field-deployable optical standards.

Doppler-Free Laser Spectroscopy Using Polarization Modulation in Na D1 and D2 Lines

김점술, 김중복, 공홍진 +1 more

Doppler-free laser spectroscopy using polarization modulation has been carried out in Na D₁ and D₂ lines. The polarization of the pump beam is modulated between identically and orthogonally to a linear or circular polarization of the probe beam. The recorded signals of the hyperfine and crossover resonances are in agreement with a recent theoretical analysis of Nakayama which is based on velocity-selective optical pumping in a four-level system. Some exceptional discrepancy occuring in the D₂ is considered to be due to several relatively close lying resonances.

Influence of Intensity Ratio of Resonant Spectral Components on Q-Factor of Dual-Frequency Doppler-Free Resonance in 87Rb Atoms

Kirill M. Sabakar, Eugene A. Tsygankov, Dmitry S. Chuchelov +4 more

Abstract Doppler-free resonance of the 87Rb D1 line induced by bichromatic counter-propagating waves with different intensity ratios of the two resonant spectral components is investigated. It is shown that the maximal amplitude is achieved at unequal intensities for the low-frequency eigen and crossover resonances, and at equal intensities for the high-frequency eigen resonance. Measurements of the Q-factor (the contrast-to-width ratio) demonstrate that for all studied resonances, its maximal value is attained at an intensity ratio different from 1. For the low-frequency eigen resonance, the maximal Q-factor enhances by a factor of six at an intensity ratio of 5 as compared to the case of equal intensities.
