Abstract

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of an interacting Bose gas with a condensate within the energy-functional formulation of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approach. For a contact interaction, we derive a self-consistent solution to the HFB equations that intrinsically eliminates divergence. This solution characterizes the equilibrium state featuring a condensate of correlated pairs of particles. We analyze the temperature dependence of key thermodynamic quantities such as condensate density, chemical potential, entropy, pressure, specific heat capacity at constant volume, and isothermal compressibility and compare them with predictions from the Popov approximation (PA). We predict that the transition temperature shifts to higher values due interactions, with the HFB approach yielding a larger shift than the PA. Analysis of the compressibility indicates that a pure pair condensate is unstable, and the stable equilibrium corresponds to only a mixture of single-particle and pair condensates.

Coupled Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov kinetic equations for a trapped Bose gas

Milena Imamović-Tomasović, Allan Griffin

Using the Kadanoff-Baym nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism, we derive the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) collisionless kinetic equations and the associated equation of motion for the condensate wave function for a trapped Bose-condensed gas. Our work generalizes earlier work by Kane and Kadanoff for a uniform Bose gas. We include the off-diagonal (anomalous) pair correlations, and thus we have to introduce an off-diagonal distribution function in addition to the normal (diagonal) distribution function. This results in two coupled kinetic equations. If the off-diagonal distribution function can be neglected as a higher-order contribution, we obtain the semiclassical kinetic equation recently used by Zaremba, Griffin, and Nikuni (based on the simpler Popov approximation). We discuss the static local equilibrium solution of our coupled HFB kinetic equations within the semiclassical approximation. We also verify that a solution is the rigid in-phase oscillation of the equilibrium condensate and noncondensate density profiles, oscillating with the trap frequency.

Conserving and gapless approximations for an inhomogeneous Bose gas at finite temperatures

Adam Griffin

We derive and discuss the equations of motion for the condensate and its fluctuations for a dilute, weakly interacting Bose gas in an external potential within the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) approximation. Account is taken of the depletion of the condensate and the anomalous Bose correlations, which are important at finite temperatures. We give a critical analysis of the self-consistent HFB approximation in terms of the Hohenberg-Martin classification of approximations (conserving vs gapless) and point out that the Popov approximation to the full HFB gives a gapless single-particle spectrum at all temperatures. The Beliaev second-order approximation is discussed as the spectrum generated by functional differentiation of the HFB single-particle Green's function. We emphasize that the problem of determining the excitation spectrum of a Bose-condensed gas (homogeneous or inhomogeneous) is difficult because of the need to satisfy several different constraints.

Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory of a charged Bose gas at finite temperature

B. Davoudi, Anna Minguzzi, M. P. Tosi

We critically examine the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) solution of the equations of motion for condensate fluctuations in a weakly coupled plasma of charged bosons at finite temperature. Analytic expressions are derived for the first two infrared-divergent terms in both the momentum distribution of the noncondensate and the anomalous Bose correlation function at low momenta. Incorporation into the theory of the appropriate form of the Hugenholtz-Pines relation for the chemical potential is needed to cancel an unphysical divergence. Exact cancellation of infrared-divergent terms is demonstrated in the HFB shift of the single-particle excitation energy away from the Bogoliubov value at long wavelengths, with the residual terms raising it towards the plasma frequency at low temperature. Numerical illustrations are presented for a number of properties of the boson plasma as functions of temperature and density in the weak-coupling regime: these are the chemical potential, the condensate fraction, the normal and anomalous momentum distribution functions and the corresponding one-body density matrices, and the dispersion relation of single-particle excitations.

Bose-Einstein Condensation Quantum Kinetics for a Gas of Interacting Excitons

O. M. Schmitt, D. B. Tran Thoai, L. Bányai +2 more

A quantum kinetics of the Bose-Einstein condensation in the self-consistent (s.c.) Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) model of the interacting Bose gas is formulated and numerically solved for the example of excitons scattering with a thermal bath of acoustic phonons. The theory describes the condensation in real time starting from a nonequilibrium initial state towards the equilibrium HFB solution. The s.c. changes of the spectrum are automatically incorporated in the scattering terms.

Comparison of gapless mean-field theories for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Nick P. Proukakis, S. A. Morgan, Seok Jin Choi +1 more

We present two gapless mean-field theories for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, and compare them to the better known Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB)-Popov approach. The proposed theories are based on suitable inclusion of the simplest anomalous average of the Bose field operator. This leads to an effective interaction between two atoms which is both temperature and density dependent, as opposed to the HFB-Popov approach, for which it is constant. These theories are compared to the HFB-Popov approach for a trapped one-dimensional condensate of 2000 atoms. The density profiles and excitation frequencies of the proposed theories differ from the corresponding HFB-Popov ones by at most a few percent.

Thermodynamic properties of repulsive weakly interacting Bose gas at sufficiently low temperature

Nguyen Van Thu, Pham Duy Thanh

In this work, we build upon the theoretical framework developed in our previous study [N. V. Thu and D. T. Pham, Phys. Lett. A 523, 129787 (2024)], where the Cornwall–Jackiw–Tomboulis effective action formalism was applied to a dilute Bose gas, to investigate its thermodynamic properties in the condensed phase at sufficiently low temperatures within the improved Hartree–Fock approximation. We focus on the analyses of the chemical potential, pressure, energy density and specific heat at constant volume, which are derived within a unified, self-consistent and gapless framework. The results obtained show excellent agreement with those predicted by the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov theory in the appropriate limits. Remarkably, our results demonstrate universal behavior for the reduced thermodynamic quantities, and a comparison with available experimental data for the chemical potential is made.
