We study the Efimov states in highly mass-imbalanced three-body systems composed of two identical heavy atoms and one light atom, focusing on the Er-Er-Li and Dy-Dy-Li cold-atom mixtures with strong dipole-dipole interactions between the heavy atoms. By solving the Born-Oppenheimer equation for varying s -wave scattering lengths between the heavy and light atoms, we demonstrate for both bosonic and fermionic systems that the Efimov spectra and hence the three-body parameters are universal even with the dipole interaction comparable in strength to the van der Waals interaction. While the bosonic systems exhibit Efimov states only in the M z = 0 channel, the fermionic systems show a characteristic doublet of the Efimov states in the M z = 0 and M z = ± 1 channels due to the interplay of finite angular momentum and the anisotropy of the dipole interaction. Both numerical results and analytical formulas obtained with the first-order perturbation show that the ratio of the three-body parameters between these two fermionic channels exhibits universality, particularly well in the limit of large mass imbalance. Leveraging this universality, we provide quantitative predictions for the values and ratios of the three-body parameters for experimentally relevant Er-Li and Dy-Li isotopes.

We study three-body systems in a mass-imbalanced, two-component, cold-atom mixture, and we investigate the three-body parameter of their Efimov states for both bosonic and fermionic systems, with a major focus on the Er-Er-Li Efimov states. For a system interacting solely via van der Waals interactions, the van der Waals universality of the three-body parameter is analytically derived using the quantum defect theory. With the addition of a perturbative dipole interaction between the heavy atoms, the three-body parameters of the bosonic and fermionic Efimov states are found to behave differently. When the dipole interaction is as strong as the van der Waals interaction, corresponding to realistic Er-Er-Li Efimov states, we show that the van der Waals universality persists once the effects of the nonperturbative dipole interaction are into the s -wave and p -wave scattering parameters between the heavy atoms. For a dipole interaction much stronger than the van der Waals interaction, we find that the universality of the Efimov states can be alternatively characterized by a quasi-one-dimensional scattering parameter due to a strong anisotropic deformation of the Efimov wave functions. Our work thus clarifies the interplay of isotropic and anisotropic forces in the universality of the Efimov states. Based on the renormalized van der Waals universality, the three-body parameter is estimated for specific isotopes of Er-Li cold-atom mixtures. Published by the American Physical Society 2024
This thesis investigates universal and non-universal aspects of few-body physics in a mass-imbalanced mixture of ultracold bosonic 133Cs and fermionic 6Li atoms. For this purpose an experimental apparatus for the creation of quantum degenerate gases has been constructed. Using radio-frequency association of weakly-bound LiCs molecules and additional atom-loss spectroscopy we determine the two-body interaction properties between Li and Cs atoms at low collision energies. The analysis with a coupled-channels calculation yields precise singlet and triplet electronic ground state molecular potential curves, from which scattering lengths and positions of Fano-Feshbach resonances are extracted. These results represent almost a tenfold improvement over the previous determination, and are used to study few-body recombination processes and, for the first time, their dependence on the interaction strength between the heavy atoms close to two broad scattering resonances at various temperatures. Measurements of three-body loss rates reveal two series of three and two consecutive LiCs2 Efimov resonances that demonstrate the universal scaling factor 4.9 between the first and second excited state resonances. The ground state resonance deviates from the discrete scaling law. By the use of hyperspherical formalism with either pairwise zero-range or Lennard-Jones model potentials we identify the van der Waals interaction between Cs atoms as a significant source of these modifications.
Abstract The independence between few-body scales beyond the van der Waals universality is demonstrated for the extreme mass-imbalanced case of a specific many-boson system. This finding generalizes the scaling properties of universal tetramers to a broader class of heterogeneous few-boson systems. We assume two heavy atoms interacting with ( N − 2)-lighter ones at the unitary limit, using a particular case where no interactions are active between identical particles, by investigating the interwoven spectra of this many-body system for an arbitrary number of light bosons. A large mass-ratio between the particles allows us to treat this N -body system analytically, by solving an effective inverse-squared long-range interaction which is stablished for the two heavy bosons. For a cluster with N − 2 light bosons ( N ⩾ 4), we discuss the implications of the corresponding long-range potentials associated with different subsystem thresholds, implying in independent interwoven limit cycles for the correlation between the energies of excited N -body system. Our study with extreme mass-imbalanced few-boson bound states provides a fundamental understanding of the scaling behavior of their interwoven spectra. The novel insights enlarge the well-known Efimov physics paradigm and show the existence of different limit cycles, which could be probed by new experiments.
Motivated by recent experimental investigations of Cs-Cs-Li Efimov resonances, this work theoretically investigates the few-body properties of $N\ensuremath{-}1$ noninteracting identical heavy bosons, which interact with a light impurity through a large s-wave scattering length. For Cs-Cs-Cs-Li, we predict the existence of universal four-body states with energies E4(n,1) and E4(n,2), which are universally linked to the energy E3(n) of the nth Efimov trimer. For infinitely large $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and vanishing $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ scattering lengths, we find $({E}_{4}^{(1,1)}/{E}_{3}^{(1)}{)}^{1/2}\ensuremath{\approx}1.51$ and $({E}_{4}^{(1,2)}/{E}_{3}^{(1)}{)}^{1/2}\ensuremath{\approx}1.01$. The $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ scattering lengths at which these states merge with the four-atom threshold, the dependence of these energy ratios on the mass ratio between the heavy and light atoms, and selected aspects of the generalized Efimov scenario for N>4 are also discussed. Possible implications of our results for ongoing cold atom experiments are presented.

Motivated by recent experiments on $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ atomic mixtures with high mass imbalance, we study the Efimov correlation in an atomic system of two heavy bosons (133Cs) immersed in a bath of light fermions (6Li). Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we identify two different regimes, depending on the Fermi momentum of light fermions (kF) and the boson-fermion scattering length as(<0), where the presence of an underlying Fermi sea plays distinct roles in the Efimov-type binding of bosons. Namely, in the regime ${k}_{F}|{a}_{s}|\ensuremath{\lesssim}1$ (${k}_{F}|{a}_{s}|\ensuremath{\gtrsim}1$), the Fermi sea induces an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction between bosons and thus favors (disfavors) the formation of a bound state, which can be seen as an Efimov trimer dressed by a fermion cloud. Interestingly, this implies nonmonotonic behavior of these bound states as increasing the fermion density (or kF). Moreover, we establish a generalized universal scaling law for the emergence and variation of such dressed Efimov bound states when incorporating a new scale (kF) brought on by the Fermi sea. These results can be directly tested in Li-Cs cold-atom experiments by measuring the modified bound-state spectrum and the shifted Efimov resonance, which manifest an emergent nontrivial Efimov correlation in a fermionic many-body environment.
