Abstract

Motivated by recent experiments on $^{6}\mathrm{Li}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ atomic mixtures with high mass imbalance, we study the Efimov correlation in an atomic system of two heavy bosons ($^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$) immersed in a bath of light fermions ($^{6}\mathrm{Li}$). Using the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, we identify two different regimes, depending on the Fermi momentum of light fermions (${k}_{F}$) and the boson-fermion scattering length ${a}_{s}(<0)$, where the presence of an underlying Fermi sea plays distinct roles in the Efimov-type binding of bosons. Namely, in the regime ${k}_{F}|{a}_{s}|\ensuremath{\lesssim}1$ (${k}_{F}|{a}_{s}|\ensuremath{\gtrsim}1$), the Fermi sea induces an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction between bosons and thus favors (disfavors) the formation of a bound state, which can be seen as an Efimov trimer dressed by a fermion cloud. Interestingly, this implies nonmonotonic behavior of these bound states as increasing the fermion density (or ${k}_{F}$). Moreover, we establish a generalized universal scaling law for the emergence and variation of such dressed Efimov bound states when incorporating a new scale (${k}_{F}$) brought on by the Fermi sea. These results can be directly tested in Li-Cs cold-atom experiments by measuring the modified bound-state spectrum and the shifted Efimov resonance, which manifest an emergent nontrivial Efimov correlation in a fermionic many-body environment.

Fermions Meet Two Bosons—the Heteronuclear Efimov Effect Revisited

Binh Tran, Michael Rautenberg, Manuel Gerken +7 more

Abstract In this article, we revisit the heteronuclear Efimov effect in a Bose-Fermi mixture with large mass difference in the Born-Oppenheimer picture. As a specific example, we consider the combination of bosonic 133Cs and fermionic 6Li. In a system consisting of two heavy bosons and one light fermion, the fermion-mediated potential between the two heavy bosons gives rise to an infinite series of three-body bound states. The intraspecies scattering length determines the three-body parameter and the scaling factor between consecutive Efimov states. In a second scenario, we replace the single fermion by an entire Fermi Sea at zero temperature. The emerging interaction potential for the two bosons exhibits long-range oscillations leading to a weakening of the binding and a breakup of the infinite series of Efimov states. In this scenario, the binding energies follow a modified Efimov scaling law incorporating the Fermi momentum. The scaling factor between deeply bound states is governed by the intraspecies interaction, analogous to the Efimov states in vacuum.

Few-boson system with a single impurity: Universal bound states tied to Efimov trimers

D. Blume

Small weakly bound droplets determine a number of properties of ultracold Bose and Fermi gases. For example, Efimov trimers near the atom-atom-atom and atom-dimer thresholds lead to enhanced losses from bosonic clouds. Generalizations to four- and higher-body systems have also been considered. Moreover, Efimov trimers have been predicted to play a role in the Bose polaron with large boson-impurity scattering length. Motivated by these considerations, the present work provides a detailed theoretical analysis of weakly bound $N$-body clusters consisting of $N\ensuremath{-}1$ identical bosons (denoted by ``B'') of mass $m$ that interact with a single distinguishable impurity particle (denoted by ``X'') of mass $M$. The system properties are analyzed as a function of the mass ratio $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ (values from $\ensuremath{\kappa}=1$ to 50 are considered), where $\ensuremath{\kappa}$ is equal to $m/M$, and the two-body $s$-wave scattering length ${a}_{\text{BX}}$ between the bosons and the impurity. To reach the universal Efimov regime in which the size of the BBX trimer as well as those of larger clusters is much larger than the length scales of the underlying interaction model, three different approaches are considered: resonance states are determined in the absence of BB and BBX interactions, bound states are determined in the presence of repulsive three-body boson-boson-impurity interactions, and bound states are determined in the presence of repulsive two-body boson-boson interactions. The universal regime, in which the details of the underlying interaction model become irrelevant, is identified.

Generalized Efimov Scenario for Heavy-Light Mixtures

D. Blume, Yangqian Yan

Motivated by recent experimental investigations of Cs-Cs-Li Efimov resonances, this work theoretically investigates the few-body properties of $N\ensuremath{-}1$ noninteracting identical heavy bosons, which interact with a light impurity through a large $s$-wave scattering length. For Cs-Cs-Cs-Li, we predict the existence of universal four-body states with energies ${E}_{4}^{(n,1)}$ and ${E}_{4}^{(n,2)}$, which are universally linked to the energy ${E}_{3}^{(n)}$ of the $n$th Efimov trimer. For infinitely large $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ and vanishing $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{133}\mathrm{Cs}$ scattering lengths, we find $({E}_{4}^{(1,1)}/{E}_{3}^{(1)}{)}^{1/2}\ensuremath{\approx}1.51$ and $({E}_{4}^{(1,2)}/{E}_{3}^{(1)}{)}^{1/2}\ensuremath{\approx}1.01$. The $^{133}\mathrm{Cs}\text{\ensuremath{-}}^{6}\mathrm{Li}$ scattering lengths at which these states merge with the four-atom threshold, the dependence of these energy ratios on the mass ratio between the heavy and light atoms, and selected aspects of the generalized Efimov scenario for $N>4$ are also discussed. Possible implications of our results for ongoing cold atom experiments are presented.

Universal Efimov spectra and fermionic doublets in highly mass-imbalanced cold-atom mixtures with van der Waals and dipole interactions

Kazuki Oi, Shimpei Endo

We study the Efimov states in highly mass-imbalanced three-body systems composed of two identical heavy atoms and one light atom, focusing on the Er-Er-Li and Dy-Dy-Li cold-atom mixtures with strong dipole-dipole interactions between the heavy atoms. By solving the Born-Oppenheimer equation for varying s -wave scattering lengths between the heavy and light atoms, we demonstrate for both bosonic and fermionic systems that the Efimov spectra and hence the three-body parameters are universal even with the dipole interaction comparable in strength to the van der Waals interaction. While the bosonic systems exhibit Efimov states only in the M z = 0 channel, the fermionic systems show a characteristic doublet of the Efimov states in the M z = 0 and M z = ± 1 channels due to the interplay of finite angular momentum and the anisotropy of the dipole interaction. Both numerical results and analytical formulas obtained with the first-order perturbation show that the ratio of the three-body parameters between these two fermionic channels exhibits universality, particularly well in the limit of large mass imbalance. Leveraging this universality, we provide quantitative predictions for the values and ratios of the three-body parameters for experimentally relevant Er-Li and Dy-Li isotopes.

Perfect screening of the inter-polaronic interaction

Shimpei Endo, Masahito Ueda

We consider heavy particles immersed in a Fermi sea of light fermions, and study the interaction between the heavy particles induced by the surrounding light fermions. With the Born-Oppenheimer method, we analytically show that the induced interaction between N heavy particles vanishes for any N in the limit of high light-fermion density. The induced interaction vanishes even in the unitarity regime. This suggests that the formation of N-body bound states associated with the Efimov effect is suppressed in the presence of the dense Fermi sea. We ascribe the vanishing induced interaction to the screening effect in the neutral Fermi system.

Enhancing the Efimov correlation in Bose polarons with large mass imbalance

Mingyuan Sun, Xiaoling Cui

We study the effect of Efimov physics (in the few-body sector) on the spectral response of the Bose polaron, a many-body system consisting of an impurity immersed in a bath of bosonic atoms. We find that the Efimov correlation can be greatly enhanced by increasing the mass ratio between the bosons and the impurity, which results in visible signatures in the rf spectrum of the polaron. Using a diagrammatic approach up to the third-order virial expansion, we show how the mass imbalance and the enhanced three-body effect modify the line shape and linewidth of the polaron spectrum. Moreover, we study the effect of a finite boson-boson interaction on the spectrum. Taking the realistic system of Li impurities immersed in Cs bosons with a positive Cs-Cs scattering length, we find a visible Efimov branch, which is associated with the second lowest Efimov trimer, in the polaron spectrum. In particular, by adjusting the boson density the Efimov branch can greatly hybridize with the attractive polaron branch, leading to spectrum broadening near their avoided level crossing. Our results can be directly probed in the cold atoms experiments on Li-Cs and Li-Rb Bose polarons.
