Abstract

Dimerized quantum magnets provide a useful arena for novel quantum states and phases transitions with the singlet-triplet type of triplon excitations. Here we study the triplon physics and the Bose-Einstein condensation in two isostructural dimerized antiferromagnets $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ ($A$ = Hg, Cd). With the systematic measurements, we demonstrate a dimer singlet ground state in HgCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ with a triplon gap $\sim$ 7.9 K and a triplon Bose-Einstein condensation with an antiferromagnetic order in CdCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ below 4.4 K. We further adopt the bond-operator technique and show that the elemental replacement preserves the Hamiltonian and allows the study in a unified theoretical framework with tunable interdimer and intradimer interactions on the opposite sides of the quantum critical point. With the peculiar Cu$_2$O$_8$ dimer configuration and effective ferromagnetic interdimer interaction, $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ is distinguished from other $S$ = 1/2 dimerized antiferromagnets. Our results represent a global understanding of the magnetic ground states as well as the magnetic transitions in the dimerized magnets of this unusual crystal structure.

Quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation of spin triplets in the dimerized quantum magnet Ba 2 CuSi 2 O 6 Cl 2

Makiko Okada, Hidekazu Tanaka, Nobuyuki Kurita +9 more

We synthesized single crystals of composition ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuSi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ and investigated their quantum magnetic properties. The crystal structure is closely related to that of the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) dimerized magnet ${\mathrm{BaCuSi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}$ also known as Han purple. ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuSi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}/{k}_{\mathrm{B}}=20.8$ K. The magnetization curves for two different field directions almost perfectly coincide when normalized by the $g$ factor except for a small jump anomaly for a magnetic field perpendicular to the $c$ axis. The magnetization curve with a nonlinear slope above the critical field is in excellent agreement with exact-diagonalization calculations based on a 2D coupled spin-dimer model. Individual exchange constants are also evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results demonstrate a 2D exchange network and weak frustration between interdimer exchange interactions, supported by weak spin-lattice coupling implied from our magnetostriction data. The magnetic-field-induced spin ordering in ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2}{\mathrm{CuSi}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{6}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{2}$ is described as the quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensation of triplets.

Theory of magnetic-field-induced Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in Ba3Cr2O8

Tyler Dodds, Bohm‐Jung Yang, Yong Baek Kim

Motivated by recent experiments on ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$, a new spin-dimer compound with spin-1/2 moments of ${\text{Cr}}^{5+}$ ions, we theoretically investigate the field-induced magnetic ordering in this material in view of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplet excitations (triplons). We apply the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Popov (HFP) approach to a microscopic Hamiltonian, using the realistic triplon dispersion measured in an inelastic neutron-scattering experiment. In particular, we ask to what extent the BEC of dilute triplons near the critical field can explain the magnetic ordering in this material. For example, we investigate the temperature range where the BEC picture of triplons can be applied via the HFP approach. We also determine the temperature regime where a quadratic approximation of the triplon dispersion works. It is found that the strength of the effective repulsive interaction between triplons is much weaker in ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$ than in the canonical spin-dimer compound ${\text{TlCuCl}}_{3}$. Small effective repulsive interaction in combination with the narrow band of triplons leads to higher density of triplons ${n}_{\text{cr}}$ at the critical point. The combined effect points to a bigger HFP correction $U{n}_{\text{cr}}$ in ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$ than in ${\text{TlCuCl}}_{3}$. Nonetheless, the HFP approach provides a reasonable explanation of the transverse magnetization and the specific-heat data of ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$.

Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons close to the quantum critical point in the quasi-one-dimensional spin- 1 2 antiferromagnet NaVOPO 4

Prashanta K. Mukharjee, K. M. Ranjith, Bonho Koo +7 more

Structural and magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ compound ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ are explored by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}\mathrm{P}$ nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, as well as complementary ab initio calculations. Whereas magnetic susceptibility of ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ may be compatible with the gapless uniform spin chain model, detailed examination of the crystal structure reveals a weak alternation of the exchange couplings with the alternation ratio $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.98$ and the ensuing zero-field spin gap ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{0}/{k}_{\mathrm{B}}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.4\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ directly probed by field-dependent magnetization measurements. No long-range order is observed down to 50 mK in zero field. However, applied fields above the critical field ${H}_{c1}\ensuremath{\simeq}1.6\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ give rise to a magnetic ordering transition with the phase boundary ${T}_{N}\ensuremath{\propto}{(H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c1})}^{\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\phi}}}$, where $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\simeq}1.8$ is close to the value expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. With its weak alternation of the exchange couplings and small spin gap, ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ lies close to the quantum critical point.

Excitation-Gap Scaling near Quantum Critical Three-Dimensional Antiferromagnets

Maximilian Lohöfer, Stefan Weßel

By means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we examine the quantum critical scaling of the magnetic excitation gap (the triplon gap) in a three-dimensional dimerized quantum antiferromagnet, the bicubic lattice, and identify characteristic multiplicative logarithmic scaling corrections atop the leading mean-field behavior. These findings are in accord with field-theoretical predictions that are based on an effective description of the quantum critical system in terms of an asymptotically free field theory, which exhibits a logarithmic decay of the renormalized interaction strength upon approaching the quantum critical point. Furthermore, using bond-based singlet spectroscopy, we identify the amplitude (Higgs) mode resonance within the antiferromagnetic region. We find a Higgs mass scaling in accord with field-theoretical predictions that relate it by a factor of sqrt[2] to the corresponding triplon gap in the quantum disordered regime. In contrast to the situation in lower-dimensional systems, we observe in this three-dimensional coupled-dimer system a distinct signal from the amplitude mode also in the dynamical spin structure factor. Its width is observed to vanish proportional to the Higgs mass in the accessible proximity to the quantum critical point.

Nonlinear bond-operator theory and 1/d expansion for coupled-dimer magnets. II. Antiferromagnetic phase and quantum phase transition

Darshan G. Joshi, Matthias Vojta C

We extend to magnetically ordered phases a recently developed expansion in $1/d$ for coupled-dimer Heisenberg magnets, where $d$ is the number of space dimensions. This extension utilizes generalized bond operators describing spin excitations on top of a reference state involving triplet condensates. We explicitly consider a model of dimers on a hypercubic lattice which displays, in addition to the paramagnetic singlet phase, a collinear antiferromagnetic phase for which we calculate static and dynamic observables at zero temperature. In particular, we show that the $1/d$ expansion smoothly connects the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases and produces sensible results at and near the quantum phase transition point. Among others, we determine the dispersion and spectral-weight distribution of the amplitude (i.e., Higgs) mode of the ordered phase. In the limit of vanishing intradimer coupling, we connect our approach to spin-wave theory.

Dimer liquid state in the quantum antiferromagnet compound LiCu2O2

Sergei A. Zvyagin, Gang Cao, Y. Xin +6 more

Results of systematic structural, magnetic, electron-spin resonance, and specific-heat investigations of the $S=1/2$ quantum antiferromagnet compound ${\mathrm{LiCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ are presented. A spin-singlet ground state is revealed at temperatures above $T\ensuremath{\sim}23\mathrm{K}.$ In this temperature region ${\mathrm{LiCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ may be regarded as a quantum $S=1/2$ chain with competing nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions in the intermediate range of the ${J}_{2}{/J}_{1}$ ratio $({\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c1}<{J}_{2}{/J}_{1}<{\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{c2}).$ The size of the energy gap between the spin-singlet ground state and the first excited triplet, \ensuremath{\Delta}, is found to be \ensuremath{\sim}72 K. The study confirms a magnetic phase transition in ${\mathrm{LiCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2},$ which results in the collapse of the spin-singlet ground state at a temperature below 23 K. In addition, a second low-temperature transition was found at $T\ensuremath{\sim}9\mathrm{K}.$ Peculiarities of the magnetic excitation spectrum in the dimer phase of ${\mathrm{LiCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}$ and its magnetic structure are discussed.
