Abstract

Motivated by recent experiments on ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$, a new spin-dimer compound with spin-1/2 moments of ${\text{Cr}}^{5+}$ ions, we theoretically investigate the field-induced magnetic ordering in this material in view of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplet excitations (triplons). We apply the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Popov (HFP) approach to a microscopic Hamiltonian, using the realistic triplon dispersion measured in an inelastic neutron-scattering experiment. In particular, we ask to what extent the BEC of dilute triplons near the critical field can explain the magnetic ordering in this material. For example, we investigate the temperature range where the BEC picture of triplons can be applied via the HFP approach. We also determine the temperature regime where a quadratic approximation of the triplon dispersion works. It is found that the strength of the effective repulsive interaction between triplons is much weaker in ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$ than in the canonical spin-dimer compound ${\text{TlCuCl}}_{3}$. Small effective repulsive interaction in combination with the narrow band of triplons leads to higher density of triplons ${n}_{\text{cr}}$ at the critical point. The combined effect points to a bigger HFP correction $U{n}_{\text{cr}}$ in ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$ than in ${\text{TlCuCl}}_{3}$. Nonetheless, the HFP approach provides a reasonable explanation of the transverse magnetization and the specific-heat data of ${\text{Ba}}_{3}{\text{Cr}}_{2}{\text{O}}_{8}$.

High-field instability of a field-induced triplon Bose-Einstein condensate

Abdulla Rakhimov, Eugene Ya. Sherman, Chul Koo Kim

We study properties of magnetic field-induced Bose-Einstein condensate of triplons as a function of temperature and the field within the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach including the anomalous density. We show that the magnetization is continuous across the transition, in agreement with the experiment. In sufficiently strong fields the condensate becomes unstable due to triplon-triplon repulsion. As a result, the system is characterized by two critical magnetic fields: one producing the condensate and the other destroying it. We show that nonparabolic triplon dispersion arising due to the gapped bare spectrum and the crystal structure has a strong influence on the phase diagram.

Bose–Einstein condensation of triplons with a weakly broken U(1) symmetry

Asliddin Khudoyberdiev, Abdulla Rakhimov, A. Schilling

The low-temperature properties of certain quantum magnets can be described in terms of a Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnetic quasiparticles (triplons). Some mean-field approaches (MFA) to describe these systems, based on the standard grand canonical ensemble, do not take the anomalous density into account and leads to an internal inconsistency, as it has been shown by Hohenberg and Martin, and may therefore produce unphysical results. Moreover, an explicit breaking of the U(1) symmetry as observed, for example, in TlCuCl 3 makes the application of MFA more complicated. In the present work, we develop a self-consistent MFA approach, similar to the Hartree–Fock–Bogolyubov approximation in the notion of representative statistical ensembles, including the effect of a weakly broken U(1) symmetry. We apply our results on experimental data of the quantum magnet TlCuCl 3 and show that magnetization curves and the energy dispersion can be well described within this approximation assuming that the BEC scenario is still valid. We predict that the shift of the critical temperature T c due to a finite exchange anisotropy is rather substantial even when the anisotropy parameter γ is small, e.g., of T c in H = 6 T and for .

Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons close to the quantum critical point in the quasi-one-dimensional spin- 1 2 antiferromagnet NaVOPO 4

Prashanta K. Mukharjee, K. M. Ranjith, Bonho Koo +7 more

Structural and magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ compound ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ are explored by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}\mathrm{P}$ nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, as well as complementary ab initio calculations. Whereas magnetic susceptibility of ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ may be compatible with the gapless uniform spin chain model, detailed examination of the crystal structure reveals a weak alternation of the exchange couplings with the alternation ratio $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\simeq}0.98$ and the ensuing zero-field spin gap ${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\Delta}}}_{0}/{k}_{\mathrm{B}}\ensuremath{\simeq}2.4\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K}$ directly probed by field-dependent magnetization measurements. No long-range order is observed down to 50 mK in zero field. However, applied fields above the critical field ${H}_{c1}\ensuremath{\simeq}1.6\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}\mathrm{T}$ give rise to a magnetic ordering transition with the phase boundary ${T}_{N}\ensuremath{\propto}{(H\ensuremath{-}{H}_{c1})}^{\frac{1}{\ensuremath{\phi}}}$, where $\ensuremath{\phi}\ensuremath{\simeq}1.8$ is close to the value expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. With its weak alternation of the exchange couplings and small spin gap, ${\mathrm{NaVOPO}}_{4}$ lies close to the quantum critical point.

Microscopic model for Bose-Einstein condensation and quasiparticle decay

T. Fischer, Stefanie Duffe, Götz Silvester Uhrig

Sufficiently dimerized quantum antiferromagnets display elementary S =1 excitations, triplon quasiparticles, protected by a gap at low energies. At higher energies, the triplons may decay into two or more triplons. A strong enough magnetic field induces Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. For both phenomena the compound IPA-CuCl 3 is an excellent model system. Nevertheless no quantitative model was determined so far despite numerous studies. Recent theoretical progress allows us to analyse data of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and of magnetic susceptibility to determine the four magnetic couplings J 1 ≈− 2.3 meV, J 2 ≈1.2 meV, J 3 ≈2.9 meV and J 4 ≈− 0.3 meV. These couplings determine IPA-CuCl 3 as system of coupled asymmetric S =1/2 Heisenberg ladders quantitatively. The magnetic field dependence of the lowest modes in the condensed phase as well as the temperature dependence of the gap without magnetic field corroborate this microscopic model.

Triplon Bose-Einstein condensation and proximate magnetism in dimerized antiferromagnets

Zhiying Zhao, F. Y. Li, Chao Dong +7 more

Dimerized quantum magnets provide a useful arena for novel quantum states and phases transitions with the singlet-triplet type of triplon excitations. Here we study the triplon physics and the Bose-Einstein condensation in two isostructural dimerized antiferromagnets $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ ($A$ = Hg, Cd). With the systematic measurements, we demonstrate a dimer singlet ground state in HgCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ with a triplon gap $\sim$ 7.9 K and a triplon Bose-Einstein condensation with an antiferromagnetic order in CdCu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ below 4.4 K. We further adopt the bond-operator technique and show that the elemental replacement preserves the Hamiltonian and allows the study in a unified theoretical framework with tunable interdimer and intradimer interactions on the opposite sides of the quantum critical point. With the peculiar Cu$_2$O$_8$ dimer configuration and effective ferromagnetic interdimer interaction, $A$Cu(SeO$_3$)$_2$ is distinguished from other $S$ = 1/2 dimerized antiferromagnets. Our results represent a global understanding of the magnetic ground states as well as the magnetic transitions in the dimerized magnets of this unusual crystal structure.
