Violation of steering inequality for generalized equiangular measurements

Abstract

In this article, we study bipartite quantum steering using a general class of measurement operators known as the generalized equiangular measurement. Our approach allows for the construction of steering inequalities that are applicable not only to informationally complete measurements but also to incomplete or lossy scenarios, where the resulting quantum assemblages may be subnormalized. We develop a method to analytically bound the value of steering functionals under local hidden state (LHS) models by employing a generalized inequality for the eigenvalues of positive semidefinite operators, extending classical results such as the Samuelson inequality. This yields universal upper bounds on the LHS value in terms of the parameters defining the frame. Furthermore, we analyze the asymptotic behavior of these bounds in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces and demonstrate the possibility of unbounded quantum violations of steering inequalities. Our formalism encompasses previously known results for mutually unbiased bases and mutually unbiased measurements as special cases, showing that these are particular instances within a unified and more general framework.

Analytic construction of dimension-dependent steering witnesses from generalized equiangular measurements

Adam Rutkowski, Katarzyna Siudzińska

We construct a dimension-dependent family of generalized equiangular measurements that gives explicit steering witnesses in every prime dimension $d\geq5$. The construction consists of $d-1$ mutually unbiased measurements and an additional normalized family of $2d-1$ Hermitian operators depending on a parameter $τ$. Positivity of the latter family is the main technical problem. We show that the noncentral operators reduce to three-dimensional invariant blocks, while the remaining central operator is exactly solvable in a two-dimensional subspace. Two unitarily equivalent $3\times3$ matrix representations describe the same active spectrum, but yield different Gershgorin enclosures because Gershgorin bounds are basis dependent. Combining the stronger endpoint from each representation gives a fully analytic asymmetric interval for $τ$ that guarantees a valid POVM. Combining this POVM with the $d-1$ MUMs yields an explicit GEAM. Finally, using a maximally entangled realization and the local-hidden-state bound previously derived for generalized equiangular measurements, we obtain an explicit steering inequality and a sufficient criterion guaranteeing quantum violation in every prime dimension $d\geq5$.

Unbounded Violation of Quantum Steering Inequalities

Marcin Marciniak, A. Rutkowski, Zhi Yin +2 more

We construct steering inequalities that exhibit unbounded violation. The concept was to exploit the relationship between steering violation and the uncertainty relation. To this end, we apply mutually unbiased bases and anticommuting observables, known to exhibit the strongest uncertainty. In both cases, we are able to procure unbounded violations. Our approach is much more constructive and transparent than the operator space theory approach employed to obtain large violation of Bell inequalities. Importantly, using anticommuting observables we are able to obtain a dichotomic steering inequality with unbounded violation. Thus far, there is no analogous result for Bell inequalities. Interestingly, both the dichotomic inequality and one of our inequalities cannot be directly obtained from existing uncertainty relations, which strongly suggest the existence of an unknown kind of uncertainty relation.

Informationally overcomplete measurements from generalized equiangular tight frames

Katarzyna Siudzińska

Abstract Informationally overcomplete measurements find important applications in quantum tomography and quantum state estimation. The most popular are maximal sets of mutually unbiased bases, for which trace relations between measurement operators are well known. In this paper, we introduce a more general class of informationally overcomplete positive, operator-valued measure (POVMs) that are generated by equiangular tight frames of arbitrary rank. This class provides a generalization of equiangular measurements to non-projective POVMs, which include rescaled mutually unbiased measurements and bases. We provide a method of their construction, analyze their symmetry properties, and provide examples for highly symmetric cases. In particular, we find a wide class of generalized equiangular measurements that are conical two-designs, which allows us to derive the index of coincidence. Our results show benefits of considering a single informationally overcomplete measurement over informationally complete collections of POVMs.

A General Framework for Constructing Local Hidden-state Models to Determine the Steerability

Yanning Jia, Fenzhuo Guo, Mengyan Li +2 more

Not all entangled states can exhibit quantum steering, and determining whether a given entangled state is steerable is a crucial problem in quantum information theory. The main challenge lies in verifying the existence of a local hidden-state (LHS) model capable of reproducing all post-measurement assemblages generated by arbitrary measurements. To address this, we propose a machine learning-based framework that employs batch sampling of measurements and gradient-based optimization to construct an optimal LHS model. We validate our method by analyzing the steerability of two-qubit Werner and two-qutrit isotropic states. For Werner states, our approach saturates the analytical visibility bounds under three Pauli measurements, arbitrary projective measurements (PVMs), and arbitrary positive operator-valued measurements (POVMs). For isotropic states, we achieve the known analytical bounds under arbitrary PVMs. We further investigate the steerability of this class of states under arbitrary POVMs, and our results suggest that POVMs can offer an advantage over PVMs in revealing the steerability of such states.

Quantum Steering Inequality with Tolerance for Measurement-Setting Errors: Experimentally Feasible Signature of Unbounded Violation

A. Rutkowski, Adam Buraczewski, Paweł Horodecki +1 more

Quantum steering is a relatively simple test for proving that the values of quantum-mechanical measurement outcomes come into being only in the act of measurement. By exploiting quantum correlations, Alice can influence-steer-Bob's physical system in a way that is impossible in classical mechanics, as shown by the violation of steering inequalities. Demonstrating this and similar quantum effects for systems of increasing size, approaching even the classical limit, is a long-standing challenging problem. Here, we prove an experimentally feasible unbounded violation of a steering inequality. We derive its universal form where tolerance for measurement-setting errors is explicitly built in by means of the Deutsch-Maassen-Uffink entropic uncertainty relation. Then, generalizing the mutual unbiasedness, we apply the inequality to the multisinglet and multiparticle bipartite Bell state. However, the method is general and opens the possibility of employing multiparticle bipartite steering for randomness certification and development of quantum technologies, e.g., random access codes.

Universal Steering Criteria

Huangjun Zhu, Masahito Hayashi, Lin Chen

We propose a general framework for constructing universal steering criteria that are applicable to arbitrary bipartite states and measurement settings of the steering party. The same framework is also useful for studying the joint measurement problem. Based on the data-processing inequality for an extended Rényi relative entropy, we then introduce a family of steering inequalities, which detect steering much more efficiently than those inequalities known before. As illustrations, we show unbounded violation of a steering inequality for assemblages constructed from mutually unbiased bases and establish an interesting connection between maximally steerable assemblages and complete sets of mutually unbiased bases. We also provide a single steering inequality that can detect all bipartite pure states of full Schmidt rank. In the course of study, we generalize a number of results intimately connected to data-processing inequalities, which are of independent interest.
