Abstract

We demonstrate the existence of an unconventional pairing state in photodoped Mott insulators on ladder and quasi-two-dimensional geometries, characterized by quasi-long-range doublon-holon correlations that signal Mott exciton condensation. The doublon-holon pairing exhibits correlations of $d$-wave-like symmetry, reminiscent of superconducting pairing in chemically doped Mott insulators. By constructing the phase diagram, using density matrix renormalization group, we reveal that the doublon-holon pairing state in the photodoped ladder emerges between the spin-singlet, charge-density-wave, and $η$-pairing phases. Our study suggests that the interplay of charge, spin, and $η$-spin degrees of freedom can give rise to exotic quantum many-body states in photodoped Mott insulators.

Spin, Charge, and η -Spin Separation in One-Dimensional Photodoped Mott Insulators

Yuta Murakami, Shintaro Takayoshi, Tatsuya Kaneko +2 more

We show that effectively cold metastable states in one-dimensional photodoped Mott insulators described by the extended Hubbard model exhibit spin, charge, and η-spin separation. Their wave functions in the large on-site Coulomb interaction limit can be expressed as |Ψ⟩=|Ψ_{charge}⟩|Ψ_{spin}⟩|Ψ_{η-spin}⟩, which is analogous to the Ogata-Shiba states of the doped Hubbard model in equilibrium. Here, the η-spin represents the type of photo-generated pseudoparticles (doublon or holon). |Ψ_{charge}⟩ is determined by spinless free fermions, |Ψ_{spin}⟩ by the isotropic Heisenberg model in the squeezed spin space, and |Ψ_{η-spin}⟩ by the XXZ model in the squeezed η-spin space. In particular, the metastable η-pairing and charge-density-wave (CDW) states correspond to the gapless and gapful states of the XXZ model. The specific form of the wave function allows us to accurately determine the exponents of correlation functions. The form also suggests that the central charge of the η-pairing state is 3 and that of the CDW phase is 2, which we numerically confirm. Our study provides analytic and intuitive insights into the correlations between active degrees of freedom in photodoped strongly correlated systems.

Photoemission signatures of photoinduced carriers and excitons in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Taiga Nakamoto, Yuta Murakami, Naoto Tsuji

We theoretically study photoemission spectra for photodoped one-dimensional Mott insulators that can host excitons, and show that their spectral characteristics differ qualitatively from those of photodoped semiconductors. In conventional semiconductors, photoemission spectra are well understood; free charge carriers generate spectral weight near the bottom of the conduction band, while the formation of excitons leads to replica features of the valence band appearing inside the band gap. In one-dimensional Mott insulators, on the other hand, strong correlations give rise to fractionalized elementary excitations-spinons, holons, and doublons-which fundamentally modify the photoemission response. We find that when photodoped carriers, i.e., doublons and holons, remain unbound, the photoemission spectrum directly reflects the dispersion of spinons, i.e., magnetic elementary excitations. In contrast, when a doublon and a holon form an excitonic bound state, replica structures of the lower Hubbard band emerge inside the Mott gap, carrying contributions from both spinon and holon excitations. Importantly, the distribution of the in-gap signal depends sensitively on the degree of doublon-holon binding. The origin of these spectral features is clarified through a combination of exact diagonalization and the slave-particle approach. These results indicate that photoemission from photoinduced carriers and excitons in strongly correlated electron systems can provide information on magnetic properties and carrier-binding properties.

η -paired superconducting hidden phase in photodoped Mott insulators

Jiajun Li, Denis Golež, Philipp Werner +1 more

We show that a metastable $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing superconducting phase can be induced by photodoping doublons and holes into a strongly repulsive fermionic Hubbard model. The doublon-hole condensate originates from an intrinsic doublon-hole exchange interaction and does not rely on the symmetry of the half-filled Hubbard model. It extends over a wide range of doublon densities and effective temperatures. Different nonequilibrium protocols to realize this state are proposed and numerically tested. We also study the optical conductivity in the superconducting phase, which exhibits ideal metallic behavior, i.e., a delta function at zero frequency in the conductivity, in conjunction with a negative conductivity at large frequencies. These characteristic optical properties can provide a fingerprint of the $\ensuremath{\eta}$-pairing phase in pump-probe experiments.

Phases of Mott-Hubbard bilayers

Jung Hoon Han, Chenglong Jia

A phase diagram of two Mott-Hubbard planes interacting with a short-range Coulomb repulsion is presented. Considering the case of equal amount of doping by holes in one layer as electrons in the other, a holon-doublon inter-layer exciton formation is shown to be a natural consequence of Coulomb attraction. Quasiparticle spectrum is gapped and incoherent below a critical doping $δ_c$ due to the formation of excitons. A spin liquid insulator (SLI) phase is thus realized without the lattice frustration. The critical value $δ_{c}$ sensitively depends on the inter-layer interaction strength. In the $tJ$ model description of each layer with the d-wave pairing, $δ_{c}$ marks the crossover between SLI and d-wave superconductor. The SLI phase, despite being non-superconducting and charge-gapped, still shows electromagnetic response similar to that of a superfluid due to the exciton transport. Including antiferromagnetic order in the $tJ$ model introduces magnetically ordered phases at low doping and pushes the spin liquid phase to a larger inter-layer interaction strength and higher doping concentrations.

Photoenhanced excitonic correlations in a Mott insulator with nonlocal interactions

Nikolaj Bittner, Denis Golež, Martin Eckstein +1 more

We investigate the effect of nonlocal interactions on the photodoped Mott insulating state of the two-dimensional Hubbard model using a nonequilibrium generalization of the dynamical cluster approximation. In particular, we compare the situation where the excitonic states are lying within the continuum of doublon-holon excitations to a setup where the excitons appear within the Mott gap. In the first case, the creation of nearest-neighbor doublon-holon pairs by excitations across the Mott gap results in enhanced excitonic correlations, but these excitons quickly decay into uncorrelated doublons and holons. In the second case, photoexcitation results in long-lived excitonic states. While in a low-temperature equilibrium state, excitonic features are usually not evident in single-particle observables such as the photoemission spectrum, we show that the photoexcited nonequilibrium system can exhibit in-gap states associated with the excitons. The comparison with exact-diagonalization results for small clusters allows us to identify the signatures of the excitons in the photoemission spectrum.

Singlet pairing and superconductivity in t−J ladders with Mott insulating stripes

Chen Cheng, Rubem Mondaini, Marcos Rigol

Pairing in superconductors occurs in a variety of channels and can be produced by various mechanisms. Here, we show that, in the presence of strong correlations, a singlet-pair superconducting phase can occur in ladder geometries with the fermions in the pairs residing on different sides of a Mott insulating stripe. The antiferromagnet correlations in the Mott stripe provide the pairing ``glue'' in such a phase. We study, using the density matrix renormalization group method, the ground state of four-leg $t\ensuremath{-}J$ ladders with Mott insulating stripes in the inner two legs. Pairing and superconductivity are revealed by the presence of negative binding energies and by algebraically decaying interleg singlet-pair correlations, respectively.
