Abstract

We develop a variational perturbation expansion around dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) that systematically incorporates nonlocal correlations beyond the local correlations treated by DMFT. We apply this approach to investigate how the DMFT critical temperature is suppressed from its mean-field value and how the critical behavior near the finite-temperature phase transition evolves from the mean-field to the Heisenberg universality class. By identifying the symmetry breaking of paramagnetic diagrammatic expansions as a signature of the Néel transition, we accurately predict the Néel temperature of the three-dimensional cubic Hubbard model across all interaction strengths with low computational cost. Introducing a variational order parameter, our method can be applied to both paramagnetic and long-range ordered states, such as antiferromagnetic order. We compute magnetization and antiferromagnetic susceptibility, demonstrating minor corrections to DMFT solutions in the weak-coupling regime while revealing significant modifications to these properties in the intermediate correlation regime. From the analysis of critical exponents, we establish the emergence of Heisenberg critical behavior beyond the mean-field nature of DMFT.

Symmetry-Broken Perturbation Theory to Large Orders in Antiferromagnetic Phases

Renaud Garioud, Fedor Šimkovic, Riccardo Rossi +4 more

We introduce a spin-symmetry-broken extension of the connected determinant algorithm [Riccardo Rossi, Determinant diagrammatic Monte Carlo algorithm in the thermodynamic limit, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 045701 (2017).PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.119.045701]. The resulting systematic perturbative expansions around an antiferromagnetic state allow for numerically exact calculations directly inside a magnetically ordered phase. We show new precise results for the magnetic phase diagram and thermodynamics of the three-dimensional cubic Hubbard model at half-filling. With detailed computations of the order parameter in the low to intermediate-coupling regime, we establish the Néel phase boundary. The critical behavior in its vicinity is shown to be compatible with the O(3) Heisenberg universality class. By determining the evolution of the entropy with decreasing temperature through the phase transition we identify the different physical regimes at U/t=4. We provide quantitative results for several thermodynamic quantities deep inside the antiferromagnetic dome up to large interaction strengths and investigate the crossover between the Slater and Heisenberg regimes.

Diagrammatic Monte Carlo approach for diagrammatic extensions of dynamical mean-field theory: Convergence analysis of the dual fermion technique

Jan Gukelberger, Evgeny Kozik, Hartmut Hafermann

The dual fermion approach provides a formally exact prescription for calculating properties of a correlated electron system in terms of a diagrammatic expansion around dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). Most practical implementations, however, neglect higher-order interaction vertices beyond two-particle scattering in the dual effective action and further truncate the diagrammatic expansion in the two-particle scattering vertex to a leading-order or ladder-type approximation. In this work, we compute the dual fermion expansion for the two-dimensional Hubbard model including all diagram topologies with two-particle interactions to high orders by means of a stochastic diagrammatic Monte Carlo algorithm. We benchmark the obtained self-energy against numerically exact diagrammatic determinant Monte Carlo simulations to systematically assess convergence of the dual fermion series and the validity of these approximations. We observe that, from high temperatures down to the vicinity of the DMFT N\'eel transition, the dual fermion series converges very quickly to the exact solution in the whole range of Hubbard interactions considered ($4\ensuremath{\le}U/t\ensuremath{\le}12$), implying that contributions from higher-order vertices are small. As the temperature is lowered further, we observe slower series convergence, convergence to incorrect solutions, and ultimately divergence. This happens in a regime where magnetic correlations become significant. We find, however, that the self-consistent particle-hole ladder approximation yields reasonable and often even highly accurate results in this regime.

Critical Properties of the Half-Filled Hubbard Model in Three Dimensions

G. Rohringer, A. Toschi, A. A. Katanin +1 more

By means of the dynamical vertex approximation (DΓA) we include spatial correlations on all length scales beyond the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the half-filled Hubbard model in three dimensions. The most relevant changes due to nonlocal fluctuations are (i) a deviation from the mean-field critical behavior with the same critical exponents as for the three dimensional Heisenberg (anti)ferromagnet and (ii) a sizable reduction of the Néel temperature (T(N)) by ~30% for the onset of antiferromagnetic order. Finally, we give a quantitative estimate of the deviation of the spectra between DΓA and DMFT in different regions of the phase diagram.

Nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory based on weak-coupling perturbation expansions: Application to dynamical symmetry breaking in the Hubbard model

Naoto Tsuji, Philipp Werner

We discuss the general formalism and validity of weak-coupling perturbation theory as an impurity solver for nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory. The method is implemented and tested in the Hubbard model, using expansions up to fourth order for the paramagnetic phase at half filling and third order for the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phase away from half filling. We explore various types of weak-coupling expansions and examine the accuracy and applicability of the methods for equilibrium and nonequilibrium problems. We find that in most cases an expansion of local self-energy diagrams including all the tadpole diagrams with respect to the Weiss Green's function (bare-diagram expansion) gives more accurate results than other schemes such as self-consistent perturbation theory using the fully interacting Green's function (bold-diagram expansion). In the paramagnetic phase at half filling, the fourth-order bare expansion improves the result of the second-order expansion in the weak-coupling regime, while both expansions suddenly fail at some intermediate interaction strength. The higher-order bare perturbation is especially advantageous in the antiferromagnetic phase near half filling. We use the third-order bare perturbation expansion within the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory to study dynamical symmetry breaking from the paramagnetic to the antiferromagnetic phase induced by an interaction ramp in the Hubbard model. The results show that the order parameter, after an initial exponential growth, exhibits an amplitude oscillation around a nonthermal value followed by a slow drift toward the thermal value. The transient dynamics seems to be governed by a nonthermal critical point, associated with a nonthermal universality class, which is distinct from the conventional Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Fluctuations analysis of spin susceptibility: Néel ordering revisited in dynamical mean field theory

Lorenzo Del Re, G. Rohringer

In this paper, we revisit the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase diagram of the single-band three-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model on a simple cubic lattice studied within the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). Although this problem has been investigated extensively in the literature, a comprehensive understanding of the impact of the different one- and, in particular, two-particle local correlation functions of DMFT on the AF transition temperature is still missing. We have, hence, performed a fluctuation analysis of ${T}_{N}$ with respect to different local bosonic fluctuations (charge, spin, particle-particle) contained in the two-particle vertex of DMFT. Our results indicate that, beyond weak coupling, the screening of the DMFT vertex by local fluctuations leads to an enhancement of ${T}_{N}$ with respect to a random phase approximation (RPA) like calculation where this vertex is replaced by the bare interaction. The overall suppression of ${T}_{N}$ in DMFT with respect to RPA is then solely due to the incoherence introduced by the DMFT self-energy in the one-particle Green's functions. This illustrates the Janus-faced role of the local moment formation in the DMFT solution of the Hubbard model, which leads to completely opposite effects in the one- and two-particle correlation functions.
