Abstract

We introduce a spin-symmetry-broken extension of the connected determinant algorithm [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 045701 (2017)]. The resulting systematic perturbative expansions around an antiferromagnetic state allow for numerically exact calculations directly inside a magnetically ordered phase. We show new precise results for the magnetic phase diagram and thermodynamics of the three-dimensional cubic Hubbard model at half-filling. With detailed computations of the order parameter in the low to intermediate-coupling regime, we establish the N{\'e}el phase boundary. The critical behavior in its vicinity is shown to be compatible with the $O(3)$ Heisenberg universality class. By determining the evolution of the entropy with decreasing temperature through the phase transition we identify the different physical regimes at $U/t\!=\!4$. We provide quantitative results for several thermodynamic quantities deep inside the antiferromagnetic dome up to large interaction strengths and investigate the crossover between the Slater and Heisenberg regimes.

Three-dimensional Hubbard model in the thermodynamic limit

Ehsan Khatami

We employ the numerical linked-cluster expansion to study finite-temperature properties of the uniform cubic lattice Hubbard model in the thermodynamic limit for a wide range of interaction strengths and densities. We carry out the expansion to the 9th order and find that the convergence of the series extends to lower temperatures as the strength of the interaction increases, giving us access to regions of the parameter space that are difficult to reach by most other numerical methods. We study the precise trends in the specific heat, the double occupancy, and magnetic correlations at temperatures as low as 0.2 of the hopping amplitude in the strong-coupling regime. We show that in this regime, accurate estimates for transition temperatures to the N\'eel ordered phase, in agreement with the predicted asymptotic behavior, can be deduced from the low-temperature magnetic structure factor. We also find evidence for possible instability to the magnetically ordered phase away from, but close to, half filling. Our results have important implications for parametrizing fermionic systems in optical lattice experiments and for benchmarking other numerical methods.

Finite-temperature phase transitions in S=12 three-dimensional Heisenberg magnets from high-temperature series expansions

M. G. Gonzalez, B. Bernu, Laurent Pierre +1 more

Many frustrated spin models on three-dimensional (3D) lattices are currently being investigated, both experimentally and theoretically, and develop new types of long-range orders in their respective phase diagrams. They present finite-temperature phase transitions, most likely in the Heisenberg 3D universality class. However, the combination between the 3D character and frustration makes them hard to study. We present here several methods derived from high-temperature series expansions (HTSEs), which give exact coefficients directly in the thermodynamic limit up to a certain order; for several 3D lattices, supplementary orders than in previous literature are reported for the HTSEs. We introduce an interpolation method able to describe thermodynamic quantities at $T>{T}_{c}$, which we use here to reconstruct the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat and to extract universal and nonuniversal quantities (for example, critical exponents, temperature, energy, entropy, and other parameters related to the phase transition). While the susceptibility associated with the order parameter is not usually known for more exotic long-range orders, the specific heat is indicative of a phase transition for any kind of symmetry breaking. We present examples of applications on ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic models on various 3D lattices and benchmark our results whenever possible.

Variational Diagrammatic Monte Carlo Built on Dynamical Mean-Field Theory

Yueyi Wang, Kristjan Haule

We develop a variational perturbation expansion around dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) that systematically incorporates nonlocal correlations beyond the local correlations treated by DMFT. We apply this approach to investigate how the DMFT critical temperature is suppressed from its mean-field value and how the critical behavior near the finite-temperature phase transition evolves from the mean-field to the Heisenberg universality class. By identifying the symmetry breaking of paramagnetic diagrammatic expansions as a signature of the Néel transition, we accurately predict the Néel temperature of the three-dimensional cubic Hubbard model across all interaction strengths with low computational cost. Introducing a variational order parameter, our method can be applied to both paramagnetic and long-range ordered states, such as antiferromagnetic order. We compute magnetization and antiferromagnetic susceptibility, demonstrating minor corrections to DMFT solutions in the weak-coupling regime while revealing significant modifications to these properties in the intermediate correlation regime. From the analysis of critical exponents, we establish the emergence of Heisenberg critical behavior beyond the mean-field nature of DMFT.

The toric code under antiferromagnetic isotropic Heisenberg interactions

Won Jang, Robert Peters, Thore Posske

We investigate the impact of an isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg perturbation on the toric code, focusing on the resulting quantum phase transition and the nature of the phase that emerges beyond topological order. Using neural-network quantum states (NQS), we compute ground states over a wide range of Heisenberg couplings while fully respecting the exact symmetries of the model. In the weak-coupling regime, the numerical results are in excellent agreement with an effective low-energy description derived from a Schrieffer-Wolff (SW) transformation, providing analytic control over the perturbative breakdown of topological order. We show that the Heisenberg perturbation only renormalizes local operators at low orders, whereas mixing between topological sectors occurs only at a perturbative order proportional to the system size. At intermediate values of the Heisenberg interaction, the topological phase breaks down. We estimate the critical point through a combination of the fidelity susceptibility and the logarithmic susceptibility of non-contractible Wilson loops for various system sizes. Furthermore, we utilize the topological entanglement entropy to provide a comprehensive characterization of the phase transition. Beyond the transition, an antiferromagnetic $\pm X/\pm Z$ Néel phase emerges, characterized by a fourfold-degenerate symmetry-broken manifold, which is explicitly probed using staggered-magnetization-based diagnostics. Our results show how local two-spin interactions, which naturally arise in realistic implementations of the toric code, drive the breakdown of topological order. Moreover, we establish the SW approach as a systematic framework for analyzing such perturbations in combination with variational many-body methods.

Universality of Mean-Field Antiferromagnetic Order in an Anisotropic 3D Hubbard Model at Half-Filling

Edwin Langmann A, Jonatan Lenells

Abstract We study Hartree–Fock theory at half-filling for the 3D anisotropic Hubbard model on a cubic lattice with hopping parameter t in the x - and y -directions and a possibly different hopping parameter $$t_z$$ t z in the z -direction; this model interpolates between the 2D and 3D Hubbard models corresponding to the limiting cases $$t_z=0$$ t z = 0 and $$t_z=t$$ t z = t , respectively. We first derive all-order asymptotic expansions for the density of states. Using these expansions and units such that $$t=1$$ t = 1 , we analyze how the Néel temperature and the antiferromagnetic mean field depend on the coupling parameter, U , and on the hopping parameter $$t_z$$ t z . We derive asymptotic formulas valid in the weak coupling regime, and we study in particular the transition from the three-dimensional to the two-dimensional model as $$t_z \rightarrow 0$$ t z → 0 . It is found that the asymptotic formulas are qualitatively different for $$t_z = 0$$ t z = 0 (the two-dimensional case) and $$t_z > 0$$ t z > 0 (the case of nonzero hopping in the z -direction). Our results show that certain universality features of the three-dimensional Hubbard model are lost in the limit $$t_z \rightarrow 0$$ t z → 0 in which the three-dimensional model reduces to the two-dimensional model.
