Abstract

Quantum entanglement, a fundamental concept in quantum mechanics, lies at the heart of many current and future quantum technologies. A pivotal task is the generation and control of diverse quantum entangled states in a more compact and flexible manner. Here, we introduce an approach to achieve diverse path entanglement by exploiting the interaction between noncommutative metasurfaces and entangled photons. Different from other path entanglements, our quantum path entanglement is evolution path entanglement of photons on Poincaré sphere. Due to quantum entanglement between idler photons and structured signal photons, evolution path of idler photons on the fundamental Poincaré sphere can be nonlocally mirrored by structured signal photons on any higher-order Poincaré sphere, resulting in quantum path entanglement. Benefiting from noncommutative metasurfaces, diverse quantum path entanglement can be switched across different higher-order Poincaré spheres using distinct combination sequences of metasurfaces. Our method allows for the tuning of diverse quantum path entanglement across a broad spectrum of quantum states, offering a significant advancement in the manipulation of quantum entanglement.

Metasurface-enabled quantum holograms with hybrid entanglement

Hong Liang, Wai Chun Wong, Tailin An +1 more

Metasurfaces, with their capability to control all possible dimensions of light, have become integral to quantum optical applications, including quantum state generation, operation, and tomography. We utilize a metasurface to generate polarization–hologram hybrid entanglement between a signal–idler photon pair to construct a quantum hologram. The properties of the quantum hologram can be revealed by collapsing the polarization degree of freedom of the idler photon, inducing interference between two holographic states of the signal photon as a meaningful and selective erasure of the holographic content. On the contrary, interference disappears when the idler photon is detected without observing polarization. This process can be further interpreted as a quantum holographic eraser, where the erasing action is visualized with erased contents in holograms. Our construction of a polarization–hologram hybrid entangled state with metasurfaces will be useful for quantum communication with enhanced robustness, anticounterfeiting applications through the additional quantum degrees of freedom or phase difference between two holographic states, and as an emerging platform for exploring fundamental quantum concepts for entanglement and nonlocality.

Quantum skyrmion parallelism via metasurface-tailored high-dimensional entanglement

Pedro Ornelas, Ramona Bedford, Fazilah Nothlawala +6 more

Quantum skyrmions are topological structures that have garnered significant interest due to their demonstrated robustness and versatility across diverse optical platforms. However, existing approaches for their generation are limited to producing pre-determined two dimensional qubit states with a single topology. Here we create multi-dimensional topological states by introducing a non-local interaction between high-dimensional photonic entanglement and a metasurface, where the topological transformation induced by the metasurface is made non-deterministic by the probabilistic nature of the interfacing entangled state. Within this framework, we demonstrate that individual quantum states can host multiple co-existing topologies that are only revealed upon measurement, allowing for their parallel transport within distinct spatial mode channels. We confirm this by revealing the rich topological landscape within our modified Hilbert space while controlling the desired output topology by orbital angular momentum (OAM) projections on one of the entangled photons, producing multiple non-local polarization-OAM entangled states characterized by distinct topological classes, all from a single metasurface device. Our results reveal new capability when structured high-dimensional entanglement is interfaced with structured matter capable of coupling photonic degrees of freedom, establishing a new pathway for the compact generation of complex quantum states.

Metasurfaces forge new paths in quantum spaces

Pashlene Naidoo, Andrew Forbes

The notion of a path in quantum mechanics has fuelled many debates on the very nature of what quantumness is. Although traditionally associated with physical paths, such as double slits, it can be far more abstract. Now Yan Wang and colleagues demonstrate exotic trajectories in an abstract quantum space built from the Bloch sphere of a locally entangled photon, while shaping the path using its non-local entangled partner as a control. The steering and directing along these new paths is enabled by cascaded metasurfaces, demonstrating the myriad of possibilities that emerge when structured matter meets quantum structured light.

Space-Time Quantum Metasurfaces

Wilton J. M. Kort-Kamp, Abul K. Azad, Diego A. R. Dalvit

Metasurfaces have recently entered the realm of quantum photonics, enabling manipulation of quantum light using a compact nanophotonic platform. Realizing the full potential of metasurfaces at the deepest quantum level requires the ability to tune coherent light-matter interactions continuously in space and time. Here, we introduce the concept of space-time quantum metasurfaces for arbitrary control of the spectral, spatial, and spin properties of nonclassical light using a compact photonic platform. We show that space-time quantum metasurfaces allow on-demand tailoring of entanglement among all degrees of freedom of a single photon. We also show that spatiotemporal modulation induces asymmetry at the fundamental level of quantum fluctuations, resulting in the generation of steered and vortex photon pairs out of vacuum. Space-time quantum metasurfaces have the potential to enable novel photonic functionalities, such as encoding quantum information into high-dimensional color qudits using designer modulation protocols, sculpting multispectral and multispatial modes in spontaneous emission, and generating reconfigurable hyperentanglement for high-capacity quantum communications.
