Abstract

As quantum key distribution (QKD) emerges as a robust defence against quantum computer threats, significant advancements have been realised by researchers. A pivotal focus has been the development of protocols that not only simplify hardware implementation, such as the use of continuous-variable (CV) systems, but also eliminate the necessity for trusted nodes, as seen with the measurement-device-independent (MDI) approach. This paper delves into the integration of these methodologies in the CV-MDI-QKD protocol, offering an in-depth exploration of its evolution, primary characteristics, and the latest advancements in both theory and experiment.

Practical Source Security of On-chip Continuous Variable Measurement Device Independent Quantum Key Distribution

Lang Li, Tao Wang, Peng Huang +4 more

In the evolving field of Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution (CV-QKD), notable for its synergistic potential with existing optical communication infrastructures, a high channel capacity, and an anticipated surge in secret rates, the Measurement Device Independent (MDI) framework stands as a bulwark against side-channel vulnerabilities at the measurement juncture [1] –[4]. Recent years have witnessed quantum photonics technology leapfrogging into a realm that promises the realization of fully integrated CV-MDI-QKD transmitter terminals, a cornerstone for large-scale CV-MDI-QKD networks. However, integrating high-efficiency on-chip light sources while effectively navigating the treacherous waters of practical security challenges remains a formidable task [5], [6]. This study is pioneering in its focus on the practical security intricacies stemming from imperfections in on-chip light sources within CV-MDI-QKD systems. We propose defense mechanisms tailored to shield against the risks associated with source defects, thereby laying a robust foundation for secure, reliable on-chip CV-MDI-QKD transmission terminals. This advancement is a critical enabler for the widespread adoption of CV-MDI-QKD, signaling a paradigm shift in secure communications.

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is a straightforward cryptographic protocol for secure communication using quantum mechanics principles. This book chapter provides an introduction to QKD protocols based on theoretical principles, applicability, and recent advancements. The chapter provides an overview of the most popular BB84 protocol and its extensions, including measurement-device-independent QKD (MDI-QKD) and twin-field QKD (TF-QKD). The chapter includes continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) and its applicability to real networks. Security attacks, including side-channel attacks and photon-number splitting (PNS) attacks, are addressed with a focus on countermeasures, including decoy-state techniques and device-independent protocols. Application of QKD for network security, cloud computing, and critical infrastructure is addressed. Integration of QKD with classical cryptography techniques, post-quantum cryptography, and innovative quantum network topologies is addressed to investigate applicability for large-scale implementation. The chapter discusses recent advancements in superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors, quantum memory-assisted QKD, and free-space QKD in atmospheric channels. It also discusses innovative reconciliation techniques, authentication schemes, future developments, and deployment challenges and provides valuable information for researchers and practitioners.

Security Analysis on Measurement-Device-Independent Quantum Key Distribution Protocol

Quantum key distribution (QKD) has been paid much attention because of its theoretical uncondi-tional security. However, in the actual system, QKD will be vulnerable to Quantum hackers because of non-perfection of equipment. The proposal of the measurement device independent (MDI) QKD provide a good solution to this problem. In this paper, we firstly introduce the latest research progress and implementation principles of the MDI-QKD protocol. And then, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the protocol in the practical application. Based on the analysis of the MDI-QKD improvement protocol, our research is mainly focused on the method of lifting scheme secure key generation rate and theoretical proof.
