Abstract

We consider excitation of Higgs modes via the modulation of the BCS coupling within the Migdal-Eliashberg-Keldysh theory of time-dependent superconductivity. Despite the presence of phonons, which break integrability, we observe Higgs amplitude oscillations reminiscent of the integrable case. The dynamics of quasiparticles follows from the effective Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations, which represent a Floquet problem for the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We find that when the Floquet-Bogoliubov bands overlap, the homogeneous solution formally leads to a negative superfluid density, which is no longer proportional to the amplitude of the order parameter. This result indicates an instability, which we explore using spatially-resolved BdG equations. Spontaneous appearance of spatial inhomogeneities in the order parameter is observed and they first occur when the superfluid density becomes unphysical. We conclude that the homogeneous solution to time-dependent superconductivity is generally unstable and breaks up into a complicated spatial landscape via an avalanche of topological excitations.

Undamped Higgs Modes in Strongly Interacting Superconductors

J. Lorenzana, G. Seibold

In superconductors gauge U(1) symmetry is spontaneously broken. According to Goldstone theorem this breaking of a continuous symmetry establishes the existence of the Bogoliubov phase mode while the gauge-invariant response also includes the amplitude fluctuations of the order parameter. The latter, which are also termed ’Higgs’ modes in analogy with the standard model, appear at the energy of the spectral gap 2Δ when the superconducting ground state is evaluated within the weak coupling BCS theory and are therefore damped. Previously we have shown that in the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation (TDGA) Higgs modes appear inside the gap with a finite binding energy relative to the quasiparticle continuum. Here we show that the binding energy of the Higgs mode becomes exponentially small in the weak coupling limit converging to the BCS solution. On the other hand, well-defined undamped amplitude modes exist in strongly coupled superconductors when the interaction energy becomes of the order of the bandwidth.

Bogoliubov analysis of Higgs mode in trapped Fermi superfluids with spatial inhomogeneity

Kakimoto, Kensuke, Takahashi, Junichi, Y. Yamanaka

The Higgs mode is a key component in the spontaneous breaking of a continuous symmetry along with the Nambu-Goldstone mode, and has been studied extensively for homogeneous systems. We consider it for inhomogeneous systems, using the superfluid of harmonically trapped ultracold Fermi atomic gas. The Fermionic field operators are expanded in a complete set of wave functions corresponding to inhomogeneous situation. Within the Hatree-Fock approximation, we derive integral equations from the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, which lead to the frequencies of the collective modes, including the Higgs and Nambu-Goldstone modes. The results show that the frequency of the Higgs mode equals twice the absolute value of the order parameter at the center of trap. This feature is robust against variations in the interaction strength, trap potential, and temperature. These results are consistent with previous theoretical and experimental studies.

Quenched dynamics and pattern formation in clean and disordered Bogoliubov-de Gennes superconductors

Bo Fan, Antonio Miguel García García

We study the quench dynamics of a two dimensional superconductor in a square lattice of size up to 200× 200 200 × 200 employing the self-consistent time dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) formalism. In the clean limit, the dynamics of the order parameter for short times, characterized by a fast exponential growth and an oscillatory pattern, agrees with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) prediction. However, unlike BCS, we observe for longer times a universal exponential decay of these time oscillations. We show explicitly that the origin of this exponential decay is the full emergence of spatial inhomogeneities of the order parameter characterized by the exponential growth of its variance. The addition of a weak disorder does not alter these results qualitatively. In this region, the spatial inhomogeneities rapidly develop into an intricate spatial structure consisting of ordered fragmented stripes in perpendicular directions where the order parameter is heavily suppressed. As the disorder strength increases, the fragmented stripes gradually turn into a square lattice of approximately circular spatial regions where the condensate is heavily suppressed. A further increase of disorder leads to the deformation and ultimate destruction of this lattice. We show these emergent spatial patterns are sensitive to the underlying lattice structure. We explore suitable settings for the experimental confirmation of these findings.

Excitation of Higgs Mode in Superfluid Fermi Gas in BCS–BEC Crossover

Jun Tokimoto, Shunji Tsuchiya, Tetsuro Nikuni

In quantum many-body systems with spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries, Higgs modes emerge as collective amplitude oscillations of order parameters. Recently, Higgs mode has been observed in the ultracold Fermi gas. In the present paper, we use the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to investigate Higgs amplitude oscillations of the superfluid order parameter in a Fermi gas induced by a rapid change of the ${\it s}$-wave scattering length. In particular, we investigate the Higgs mode with different values of the initial scattering length. We find that the energy of the Higgs mode coincides with the threshold energy of the pair-breaking excitation, and exponent of the power-low decay of the Higgs mode $γ$ continuously changes between $γ=-1/2$ and $γ=-3/2$ through the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover. Moreover, we propose the optimal ramp speed of the scattering length for observing the clearest Higgs oscillations.

Spatial instability of a homogeneous superconductor after an interaction quench

Medha Roy Choudhury, Sankha Subhra Bakshi, Pinaki Majumdar +1 more

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a conventional superconductor, described by the attrac- tive Hubbard model, driven far from equilibrium by quenching the Hubbard attraction. We evolve the full density matrix of the system in time using the Heisenberg equation of motion, tracking the spatiotemporal dynamics of the pairing and density fields. We use very weakly inhomogeneous initial conditions to probe the stability of the homogeneous dynamics to spatial perturbations. At initial times after the quench the pairing and density fields remain homogeneous in space while fluctuating in time. However, depending on the quench strength the spatially uniform dynamics can become unstable beyond a threshold time, with emergence of spatial textures. The onset time for the instability depends on the strength of the quench and the initial inhomogeneity. At long times the system evolves towards a state with significantly reduced spatial heterogeneity. The time dependence of the global superconducting order parameter suggests two broad categories of re- sponse to a quench. One of these involves strongly inhomogeneous pairing and bond currents in the nonequilibrium superconductor.

Inhomogeneous pairing in highly disordereds-wave superconductors

Amit Ghosal, Mohit Randeria, Nandini Trivedi

We study a simple model of a two-dimensional s-wave superconductor in the presence of a random potential as a function of disorder strength. We first use the Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) approach to show that, with increasing disorder, the pairing amplitude becomes spatially inhomogeneous, and the system cannot be described within conventional approaches for studying disordered superconductors that assume a uniform order parameter. In the high-disorder regime, we find that the system breaks up into superconducting islands, with large pairing amplitude, separated by an insulating sea. We show that this inhomogeneity has important implications for the physical properties of this system, such as superfluid density and the density of states. We find that a finite spectral gap persists in the density of states, even in the weak-coupling regime, for all values of disorder, and we provide a detailed understanding of this remarkable result. We next generalize Anderson's idea of the pairing of exact eigenstates to include an inhomogeneous pairing amplitude, and show that it is able to qualitatively capture many of the nontrivial features of the full BdG analysis. Finally, we study the transition to a gapped insulating state driven by quantum phase fluctuations about the inhomogeneous superconducting state.
