Abstract

In quantum many-body systems with spontaneous breaking of continuous symmetries, Higgs modes emerge as collective amplitude oscillations of order parameters. Recently, Higgs mode has been observed in the ultracold Fermi gas. In the present paper, we use the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations to investigate Higgs amplitude oscillations of the superfluid order parameter in a Fermi gas induced by a rapid change of the ${\it s}$-wave scattering length. In particular, we investigate the Higgs mode with different values of the initial scattering length. We find that the energy of the Higgs mode coincides with the threshold energy of the pair-breaking excitation, and exponent of the power-low decay of the Higgs mode $γ$ continuously changes between $γ=-1/2$ and $γ=-3/2$ through the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover. Moreover, we propose the optimal ramp speed of the scattering length for observing the clearest Higgs oscillations.

Rapid ramps across the BEC-BCS crossover: A route to measuring the superfluid gap

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We investigate the response of superfluid Fermi gases to rapid changes of the three-dimensional $s$-wave scattering length $a$ by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations. In general the magnitude of the order parameter $\left|\ensuremath{\Delta}\right|$ performs oscillations, which are sometimes called the ``Higgs'' mode, with the angular frequency $2{\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\text{gap}}/\ensuremath{\hbar}$, where ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\text{gap}}$ is the gap in the spectrum of fermionic excitations. First, we excite the oscillations with a linear ramp of $1/a$ and study the evolution of $\left|\ensuremath{\Delta}\right|$. Second, we continously drive the system with a sinusoidal modulation of $1/a$. In the first case, the oscillations in $\left|\ensuremath{\Delta}\right|$ damp according to a power law. In the second case, the continued driving causes revivals in the oscillations. In both cases, the excitation of the oscillations causes a reduction in the time-averaged value of $\left|\ensuremath{\Delta}\right|$. We propose two experimental protocols, based around the two approaches, to measure the frequency and damping of the oscillations, and hence ${\ensuremath{\Delta}}_{\text{gap}}$.

Exciting the long-lived Higgs mode in superfluid Fermi gases with particle removal

Guitao Lyu, Kui-Tian Xi, Sukjin Yoon +2 more

Experimental evidence of the Higgs mode in strongly interacting superfluid Fermi gases had not been observed until recently [Behrle et al., Nat. Phys. 14, 781 (2018).]. Due to the coupling with other collective modes and quasiparticle excitations, generating stable Higgs-mode oscillations is challenging. We study how to excite long-lived Higgs-mode oscillations in a homogeneous superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS-BEC crossover. We find that the Higgs mode can be excited by time-periodically modulating the scattering length at an appropriate amplitude and frequency. However, even for a modulation frequency below twice the pairing-gap energy, quasiparticles are still excited through the generation of higher harmonics due to nonlinearity in the superfluid. More importantly, we find that persistent Higgs-mode oscillations with almost constant amplitude can be produced by removing particles at an appropriate momentum, and the oscillation amplitude can be controlled by the number of removed particles. Finally, we propose two ways to experimentally realize particle removal.

Bogoliubov excitations of trapped superfluid Fermi gases in a BCS-BEC crossover beyond the Thomas-Fermi limit

Yong-li Ma, Guoxiang Huang

We study the Bogoliubov collective excitations of harmonically trapped superfluid Fermi gases in the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) beyond Thomas-Fermi (TF) limit. Starting from a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation and an equation of state valid for the whole crossover, we derive Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) equations for low-lying collective modes at zero temperature. We use a Fetter-like variational ground state wave function to remove the noncontinuity of slope at the boundary of condensate, which appears in the TF limit. We solve the BdG equations analytically and obtain explicit expressions for all eigenvalues and eigenfunctions, valid for various crossover regimes and for traps with spherical and axial symmetries. We discuss the feature of these collective excitations in the BCS-BEC crossover and show that the theoretical result obtained agrees with available experimental data near and beyond the TF limit.

Dynamics of Dark Solitons in a Trapped Superfluid Fermi Gas

R. G. Scott, F. Dalfovo, Лев П. Питаевский +1 more

We study soliton oscillations in a trapped superfluid Fermi gas across the Bose-Einstein condensate to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BEC-BCS) crossover. We derive an exact equation for the oscillation period in terms of observable quantities, which we confirm by solving the time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Hence we reveal the appearance and dynamics of solitons across the crossover, and show that the period dramatically increases as the soliton becomes shallower on the BCS side of the resonance. Finally, we propose an experimental protocol to test our predictions.

Collective modes of low-dimensional superfluid Fermi gases in the BCS-BEC crossover: Time-dependent variational analysis

Yu Long Zhou, Guoxiang Huang

We investigate collective modes and free expansions of quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional (Q1D and Q2D) ultracold Fermi gases in the crossover from a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC). We solve a superfluid order parameter equation valid for the BCS-BEC crossover by employing a time-dependent variational method. We take a trial wave function of hybrid Gaussian-parabolic type, which not only reflects the low-dimensional character of the system but also allows an essentially analytical approach for the problem. We present Q1D and Q2D criteria that are valid in various superfluid regimes and show clearly the relation between the maximum condensed particle number and the parameters of the trapping potential as well as the atom-atom interaction. We demonstrate that, due to the small particle number in Q1D and Q2D condensates, the contribution to oscillating frequencies of collective modes by the quantum pressure in the strong-confinement direction is significant and hence the Thomas-Fermi approximation cannot be used. We also show that the free expansion of Q1D and Q2D superfluid Fermi gases in the strong-confinement direction is much faster than that in the weak-confinement direction.

THE EFFECTS OF THE BEYOND MEAN FIELD CORRECTIONS OF FERMI SUPERFLUID GAS IN A DOUBLE-WELL POTENTIAL

Wen-Yuan Wang, Wen-Shan Duan, JIE LIU

By considering the contribution of the higher-order term representing the lowest approximation of beyond mean field corrections, we investigate a superfluid Fermi gas confined in a double-well potential in Bose–Einstein Condensation (BEC) side of the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer (BCS) to BEC crossover. Two limited cases of deep BEC regime and BEC regime of BCS–BEC crossover, corresponding to the two-body scattering length a sc is small enough and large enough, respectively. We derive a simple two-mode model that could depict the dynamics effectively. With making thorough analysis on the two-mode model and its corresponding classical Hamiltonian, we find that the Josephson oscillation or self-trapping phenomenon could emerge at certain parameters. We find three kinds of the phase states: Josephson oscillation (JO), oscillating-phase-type self-trapping (OPTST) and running-phase-type self-trapping (RPTST). The dependence of these three phase states on the dimensionless interaction parameter y = 1/(kFa sc ) and the initial system energy are given in this paper.
