Entanglement Breaking Structure of Cartan-Covariant Quantum Channels

Abstract

Cartan-covariant quantum channels are introduced and studied using the Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism. The channels are Cartan-covariant as the covariance groups considered form symmetric pairs with the special unitary group SU($n$), and their associated Cartan involution provides a route to exactly compute the eigenspectrum of their Choi states and the partial transpose for any $n\in \mathbb{N}$. These channels include previously studied SO$(n)$-covariant channels, and further include Sp$(\frac{n}{2})$-covariant channels (when $n$ is even) and S(U($p$) $\times$ U($q$))-covariant channels (where $n\!=\!p\!+\!q$). We show that all Cartan-covariant channels satisfy the PPT$^{2}$-conjecture and further demonstrate the nontrivial nature of this result for the class of Sp$(\frac{n}{2})$-covariant and ${\rm S}({\rm U}(p) \!\times\!{\rm U}(q))$-covariant channels

Random Covariant Quantum Channels

Ion Nechita, Sang-Jun Park

Abstract The group symmetries inherent in quantum channels often make them tractable and applicable to various problems in quantum information theory. In this paper, we introduce natural probability distributions for covariant quantum channels. Specifically, this is achieved through the application of “twirling operations” on random quantum channels derived from the Stinespring representation that uses Haar-distributed random isometries. We explore various types of group symmetries, including unitary and orthogonal covariance, hyperoctahedral covariance, and diagonal orthogonal covariance (DOC), and analyze their properties related to quantum entanglement based on the model parameters. In particular, we discuss the threshold phenomenon for positive partial transpose and entanglement breaking properties, comparing thresholds among different classes of random covariant channels. Finally, we contribute to the $$\hbox {PPT}^2$$ PPT 2 conjecture by showing that the composition between two random DOC channels is generically entanglement breaking.

SU(2)-Covariant Quantum Channels

Łukasz Rudnicki, A. B. Klimov, Ariana S. Muñoz +2 more

We present a complete characterization of quantum channels covariant under the action of SU(2), a symmetry that arises naturally across a wide range of physical settings. By exploiting the constraints imposed by rotational symmetry, we derive the spectral decomposition of the associated Choi–Jamiołkowski operators and obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the corresponding Kraus operators. This unified framework provides a systematic approach to analyzing the structure and dynamics of SU(2)-covariant noise, with direct applications to quantum communication, information processing, and symmetry-constrained quantum protocols.

Diagonal Unitary Covariant Superchannels

Dariusz Chruściński, Vivek Pandey, Sohail

We present a complete characterization of diagonal unitary covariant (DU-covariant) superchannels, i.e. higher-order transformations transforming quantum channels into themselves. Necessary and sufficient conditions for complete positivity and trace preservation are derived and the canonical decomposition describing DU-covariant superchannels is provided. The presented framework unifies and extends known families of covariant quantum channels and enables explicit analysis of their action on physically relevant examples, including amplitude-damping, bit-flip, and Pauli channels. Our results provide a practical toolbox for symmetry-restricted higher-order quantum processes and offer a setting for exploring open problems such as the celebrated positive partial transpose (PPT)-squared conjecture.

Geometry of phase-covariant qubit channels

Katarzyna Siudzińska

Abstract We analyze the geometry on the space of non-unital phase-covariant qubit maps. Using the corresponding Choi-Jamiołkowski states, we derive the Hilbert-Schmidt line and volume elements using the channel eigenvalues together with the parameter that characterizes non-unitality. We find the shapes and analytically compute the volumes of phase-covariant channels, in particular entanglement breaking and obtainable with time-local generators.

Choi-Jamiołkowski isomorphism(s) and channel/state duality, naturally!

Paul E. Lammert

Provided a maximally entangled state vector in ${\mathcal{H}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, the Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism of quantum information theory (or channel/state duality) produces a mapping of ${\mathsf CP}({\mathcal{H}},{\mathcal{K}})$ (completely positive maps of density operators on ${\mathcal{H}}$ tothose on ${\mathcal{K}}$) onto the density operators on ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, which extends to a unitary map. Here, ${\mathcal{H}}$ and ${\mathcal{K}}$ are {finite-dimensional} Hilbert spaces. The nature of this construction, the form of the associated formulas, and the possibility of versions which do not require an entangled vector seed, are illuminated from the perspective of {naturality}, in the sense of Eilenberg and MacLane. There is a unique such correspondence (``Choi map'') natural in both ${\mathcal{H}}$ and ${\mathcal{K}}$ which produces density operators on either ${\mathsf L}({\mathcal{H}},{\mathcal{K}})$ (Hilbert-Schmidt inner product) or ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}^*$ instead of ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$. In particular, no entangled state input is required. There are no such binatural maps carried on ${\mathcal{K}}\otimes{\mathcal{H}}$, but those natural in only ${\mathcal{K}}$ are canonically associated with unitary maps ${\mathcal{H}}\rightarrow{\mathcal{H}}^*$ and derive from the binatural maps. The construction recovers the standard Choi-Jamiolkowski formulae and shows how they express naturality.

Eventually entanglement breaking maps

Mizanur Rahaman, Samuel Jaques, Vern I. Paulsen

We analyze linear maps on matrix algebras that become entanglement breaking after composing a finite or infinite number of times with themselves. This means that the Choi matrix of the iterated linear map becomes separable in the tensor product space. If a linear map becomes entanglement breaking after finitely many iterations, we say that the map has a finite index of separability. In particular, we show that every unital positive partial transpose (PPT) channel has a finite index of separability and that the class of unital channels that have a finite index of separability is a dense subset of the unital channels. We construct concrete examples of maps which are not PPT but have a finite index of separability. We prove that there is a large class of unital channels that are asymptotically entanglement breaking. Our work is motivated by Christandl’s PPT-squared conjecture. This conjecture states that every PPT channel, when composed with itself, becomes entanglement breaking.
