Abstract

We theoretically study quantum spin transport in a one-dimensional folded XXZ model with an alternating domain-wall initial state via the Bethe ansatz technique, exactly demonstrating that a probability distribution of finding a leftmost up spin with an appropriate scaling variable converges to the Tracy-Widom distribution for the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE), which is a universal distribution for the largest eigenvalue of GUE under a soft-edge scaling limit. Our finding presented here offers a first exact derivation of the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution in the dynamics of the interacting quantum model not being mapped to noninteracting fermions via the Jordan-Wigner transformation. On the basis of the exact solution of the folded XXZ model and our numerical analysis of the XXZ model, we discuss a universal behavior for the probability of finding the leftmost up spin in the XXZ model.

A smooth transition towards a Tracy–Widom distribution for the largest eigenvalue of interacting k-body fermionic embedded Gaussian ensembles

Ernesto Carro, Luis Benet, Isaac Pérez Castillo

Abstract In spite of its simplicity, the central limit theorem captures one of the most outstanding phenomena in mathematical physics, that of universality. While this classical result is well understood, it is still not very clear what happens to this universal behavior when the random variables become correlated. A fruitful mathematically laboratory to investigate the rising of new universal properties is offered by the set of eigenvalues of random matrices. In this regard, a lot of work has been done using the standard random matrix ensembles and focusing on the distribution of extreme eigenvalues. In this case, the distribution of the largest or smallest eigenvalue departs from the Fisher–Tippett–Gnedenko theorem yielding the celebrated Tracy–Widom distribution. One may wonder, yet again, how robust this new universal behavior captured by the Tracy–Widom distribution is when the correlation among eigenvalues changes. Few answers have been provided to this poignant question, and our intention in the present work is to contribute to this interesting unexplored territory. Thus, we study numerically the probability distribution for the normalized largest eigenvalue of the interacting k -body fermionic orthogonal and unitary embedded Gaussian ensembles in the diluted limit. We find a smooth transition from a slightly asymmetric Gaussian-like distribution, for small k / m , to the Tracy–Widom distribution as k / m → 1 , where k is the rank of the interaction and m is the number of fermions. Correlations at the edge of the spectrum are stronger for small values of k / m and are independent of the number of particles considered. Our results indicate that subtle correlations toward the edge of the spectrum distinguish the statistical properties of the spectrum of interacting many-body systems in the dilute limit, from those expected for the standard random matrix ensembles.

Free fermions at the edge of interacting systems

Jean-Marie Stéphan

We study the edge behavior of inhomogeneous one-dimensional quantum systems, such as Lieb-Liniger models in traps or spin chains in spatially varying fields. For free systems these fall into several universality classes, the most generic one being governed by the Tracy-Widom distribution. We investigate in this paper the effect of interactions. Using semiclassical arguments, we show that since the density vanishes to leading order, the strong interactions in the bulk are renormalized to zero at the edge, which simply explains the survival of Tracy-Widom scaling in general. For integrable systems, it is possible to push this argument further, and determine exactly the remaining length scale which controls the variance of the edge distribution. This analytical prediction is checked numerically, with excellent agreement. We also study numerically the edge scaling at fronts generated by quantum quenches, which provide new universality classes awaiting theoretical explanation.

Exact time evolution formulae in the XXZ spin chain with domain wall initial state

Jean-Marie Stéphan

Abstract We study the time evolution of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain initialized in a domain wall state, where all spins to the left of the origin are up, all spins to its right are down. The focus is on exact formulae, which hold for arbitrary finite (real or imaginary) time. In particular, we compute the amplitudes corresponding to the process where all but k spins come back to their initial orientation, as a k -fold contour integral. These results are obtained using a correspondence with the six vertex model, and taking a somewhat complicated Hamiltonian/Trotter-type limit. Several simple applications are studied and also discussed in a broader context.

Subdiffusive front scaling in interacting integrable models

Vir B. Bulchandani, Christoph Karrasch

We show that any interacting integrable model possesses a class of initial states for which the leading corrections to ballistic transport are subdiffusive rather than diffusive. These initial states are natural to realize experimentally and include the domain-wall initial condition that has been the object of much recent scrutiny. Upon performing numerical matrix product state simulations in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain, we find that such states can exhibit subdiffusive ${t}^{1/3}$ scaling of fronts of spin, energy, and entanglement entropy across the entire range of anisotropies. This demonstrates that Tracy-Widom scaling is not incompatible with model interactions, as was previously believed.

Domain Walls in the Heisenberg-Ising Spin-1/2 Chain

Axel Saenz, Craig A. Tracy, Harold Widom

In this paper we obtain formulas for the distribution of the left-most up-spin in the Heisenberg-Ising spin-1/2 chain with anisotropy parameter $Δ$, also known as the XXZ spin-1/2 chain, on the one-dimensional lattice $\mathbb{Z}$ with domain wall initial conditions. We use the Bethe Ansatz to solve the Schr$ö$dinger equation and a recent antisymmetrization identity of Cantini, Colomo, and Pronko (arXiv:1906.07636) to simplify the marginal distribution of the left-most up-spin. In the $Δ=0$ case, the distribution $F_2$ arises. In the $Δ\neq 0$ case, we propose a conjectural series expansion type formula based on a saddle point analysis. The conjectural formula turns out to be a Fredholm series expansion in the $Δ\rightarrow 0$ limit and recovers the result for $Δ= 0$.

Spin transport on the integrable XXZ chain

Shinya Ae

Using the Bethe ansatz method and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), properties of the spin transport is analyzed for the integrable XXZ chain with the anisotropy 0 ≤ ∆ < 1.Our approach starts from reconstructing the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin.We obtain the fusion hierarchy of the quantum transfer matrices (T -functions) in the arbitrary spin case, and we derive functional relations (T -and Y -systems) satisfied by the T -functions and certain combinations of them (Y -functions).Through analytical arguments, the Y -system is reduced to a set of non-linear integral equations, equivalent to the TBA equations. At first, we use the TBA equations for some higher-spin chains in order to examine the regular zero frequency contribution to the spin current correlation (spin dc conductivity) for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. In the high temperature limit, we write down the dressed scattering kernels by one quasi-particle bare energies and exactly obtain the spin dc conductivity at zero magnetic field, which is proportional to the inverse temperature β at the β → 0 limit. We find that the high temperature proportionality constant σ reg 0 of the spin dc conductivity is discontinuous at all rational numbers of the anisotropy parameter p 0 = π/ cos -1 ∆ ≥ 2 with the gap increasing larger than the second power of growing magnetization on one quasiparticle. The isotropic ∆ = 1 point is exceptional.Close to this point, σ reg 0 slowly increases in proportion to the first power of the one quasi-particle magnetization. On the other hand, σ reg 0 is proportional to the second power of the same when p 0 approaches irrational numbers. At second, we examine the finite-temperature spin Drude weight for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin, where GHD methods are employed. We calculate the spin Drude weight at zero magnetic field, and we find a characteristic fractal-like structure of the Drude weight at arbitrary spin across a broad range of temperatures, similar to the spin-1/2 case.In our approach, the solutions to the TBA equations (i.e., the Y -functions) can be explicitly written in terms of the T -functions, thus allowing for a systematic calculation of the hightemperature limit of the Drude weight, as well as the spin dc conductivity in the spin 1/2 case.
