Abstract

In this work, we explore both the internal and external atomic degrees of freedom to observe quantum entanglement between the modes produced by a mirrorless optical parametric oscillator operating below the oscillation threshold in a sample of free-space cold cesium atoms. Using a new heterodyne technique, we recover the covariance matrix that reveals the quantum entanglement for two different pairs of modes, thus demonstrating the generation of four entangled modes in this system. Applications to quantum networks and the possibilities of studying higher orders of entanglement are a direct consequence of the present study.

Continuous Variable Entanglement in an Optical Parametric Oscillator Based on a Nondegenerate Four Wave Mixing Process in Hot Alkali Atoms

A. Montaña Guerrero, R. L. Rincón Celis, P. Nussenzveig +3 more

We present the measurement of entanglement between twin beams generated with a doubly resonant optical parameter oscillator (OPO) based on four-wave mixing in hot ^{85}Rb vapor above threshold. This is the first measurement of entanglement in an OPO with a χ^{(3)} media above threshold. We reconstruct the covariance matrix for several configurations and based on a full picture of the four side band mode state, we study entanglement between all possible bipartitions. We show a robust generation of entanglement with stronger generation for a specific pair of modes. For this system, we show that atomic density is a determinant factor for the generation and loss of quantum correlations. The generation of entangled fields with an atomic OPO operating close to atomic resonance of alkali atoms enables a natural integration into quantum networks.

Direct generation of spatial quadripartite continuous variable entanglement in an optical parametric oscillator

Kui Liu, Jun Guo, Chunxiao Cai +2 more

Multipartite entanglement is used for quantum information applications, such as building multipartite quantum communications. Generally, generation of multipartite entanglement is based on a complex beam-splitter network. Here, based on the spatial freedom of light, we experimentally demonstrated spatial quadripartite continuous variable entanglement among first-order Hermite-Gaussian modes using a single type II optical parametric oscillator operating below threshold with an HG0245° pump beam. The entanglement can be scalable for larger numbers of spatial modes by changing the spatial profile of the pump beam. In addition, spatial multipartite entanglement will be useful for future spatial multichannel quantum information applications.

Continuous-variable entanglement of phase-locked light beams

Hayk H. Adamyan, Gagik Yu. Kryuchkyan

We explore in detail the possibility of intracavity generation of continuous-variable (CV) entangled states of light beams under mode phase-locked conditions. We show that such quantum states can be generated in a self-phase-locked nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) based on type II phase-matched down-conversion combined with a linear mixer of two orthogonally polarized modes of the subharmonics in a cavity. A quantum theory of this device, recently realized in the experiment, is developed for both subthreshold and above-threshold operational regimes. We show that the system providing high-level phase coherence between two generated modes, unlike the ordinary NOPO, also exhibits different types of quantum correlations between photon numbers and phases of these modes. We quantify the CV entanglement as two-mode squeezing and show that the maximal degree of the integral two-mode squeezing (which is $50%$ relative to the level of vacuum fluctuations) is achieved at the pump field intensity close to the generation threshold of a self-phase-locked NOPO, provided that the constant of linear coupling between the two polarizations is much less than the mode detunings. The peculiarities of CV entanglement for the case of unitary, nondissipative dynamics of the system under consideration are also cleared up.

Narrow-band frequency tunable light source of continuous quadrature entanglement

C. Schori, Jens Lykke Sørensen, Eugene Simon Polzik

We report the observation of nonclassical quantum correlations of continuous light variables from an altogether different type of source. It is a frequency nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator below threshold, where signal and idler fields are separated by 740 MHz corresponding to two free spectrum ranges of the parametric oscillator cavity. The degree of entanglement observed, $\ensuremath{-}3.8\mathrm{dB},$ is the highest to date for a narrow-band tunable source suitable for atomic quantum memory and other applications in atomic physics. Finally we use the latter to visualize the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox.
