Abstract

We conduct a comprehensive study of anomalous charge transport in the quantum sine-Gordon model. Employing the framework of generalized hydrodynamics, we compute Drude weights and Onsager matrices across a wide range of coupling strengths to quantify ballistic and diffusive transport, respectively. We find that charge transport is predominantly diffusive at accessible timescales, indicated by the corresponding Onsager matrix significantly exceeding the Drude weight -- contrary to most integrable models where transport is primarily ballistic. Reducing the Onsager matrix to a few key two-particle scattering processes enables us to efficiently examine transport in both low- and high-temperature limits. The charge transport is dictated by nondiagonal scattering of the internal charge degree of freedom: at particular values of the coupling strength with diagonal, diffusive effects amount to merely subleading corrections. However, at couplings approaching these points, the charge Onsager matrix and corresponding diffusive timescale diverge. Our findings relate to similar transport anomalies in XXZ spin chains, offering insights through their shared Bethe ansatz structures.

Thermodynamics and fractal Drude weights in the sine-Gordon model

Botond C. Nagy, Márton Kormos, G. Takács

The sine-Gordon model is a paradigmatic quantum field theory that provides the low-energy effective description of many gapped one-dimensional systems. Despite this fact, its complete thermodynamic description in all its regimes has been lacking. Here, we fill this gap and derive the framework that captures its thermodynamics and serves as the basis of its hydrodynamic description. As a first application, we compute the Drude weight characterizing the ballistic transport of topological charge and demonstrate that its dependence on the value of the coupling shows a fractal structure, similar to the gapless phase of the XXZ spin chain. The thermodynamic framework can be applied to study other features of nonequilibrium dynamics in the sine-Gordon model using generalized hydrodynamics, opening the way to a wide array of theoretical studies and potential novel experimental predictions.

Bethe-Boltzmann hydrodynamics and spin transport in the XXZ chain

Vir B. Bulchandani, Romain Vasseur, Christoph Karrasch +1 more

The anomalous nature of spin transport in the XXZ quantum spin chain has been a topic of theoretical interest for some time. Here, the integrability of the underlying dynamics leads to a ballistic component of the spin current, characterized by a spin Drude weight, which measures the degree of divergence of the zero-frequency spin conductivity. However, this quantity had previously proven to be beyond the reach of standard Bethe ansatz techniques. Here, the authors show that a recently developed hydrodynamic formalism for quantum integrable models may be used to compute the spin Drude weight. They also propose a numerical scheme to obtain hydrodynamic predictions for finite-time energy transport. This suggests that the hydrodynamic approach captures completely the ballistic component that dominates transport at long times and distances in the gapless regime of the XXZ model.

Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and generalised hydrodynamics in the sine-Gordon model

Botond C. Nagy, G. Takács, Márton Kormos

We set up a hydrodynamic description of the non-equilibrium dynamics of sine-Gordon quantum field theory for generic coupling. It is built upon an explicit form of the Bethe Ansatz description of general thermodynamic states, with the structure of the resulting coupled integral equations encoded in terms of graphical diagrams. The resulting framework is applied to derive results for the Drude weights of charge and energy. Quantities associated with the charge universally have fractal dependence on the coupling, which is notably absent from those associated with energy, a feature explained by the different roles played by reflective scattering in transporting these quantities. We then present far-from-equilibrium results, including explicit time evolution starting from bipartite initial states and dynamical correlation functions. Our framework can be applied to explore numerous other aspects of non-equilibrium dynamics, which opens the way to a wide array of theoretical studies and potential novel experimental predictions.

Anomalous spin transport in integrable random quantum circuits

Songlei Wang, Chenguang Liang, Hongzheng Zhao +1 more

High-temperature spin transport in integrable quantum spin chains exhibits a rich dynamical phase diagram, including ballistic, superdiffusive, and diffusive regimes. While integrability is known to survive in static and periodically driven systems, its fate in the complete absence of time-translation symmetry, particularly in interacting random quantum circuits, has remained unclear. Here we construct integrable random quantum circuits built from inhomogeneous XXZ R-matrices. Remarkably, integrability is preserved for arbitrary sequences of gate layers, ranging from quasiperiodic to fully random, thereby explicitly breaking both continuous and discrete time-translation symmetry. Using large-scale time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group simulations at infinite temperature and half filling, we map out the resulting spin-transport phase diagram and identify ballistic, superdiffusive, and diffusive regimes controlled by the spectral parameters of the R-matrices. The spatiotemporal structure of spin correlations within each regime depends sensitively on the inhomogeneity, exhibiting spatial asymmetry and sharp peak structures tied to near-degenerate quasiparticle velocities. To account for these findings, we develop a generalized hydrodynamics framework adapted to time-dependent integrable circuits, yielding Euler-scale predictions for correlation functions, Drude weights, and diffusion bounds. This approach identifies the quasiparticles governing transport and quantitatively captures both the scaling exponents and fine structures of the correlation profiles observed numerically. Our results demonstrate that exact Yang-Baxter integrability is compatible with stochastic quantum dynamics and establish generalized hydrodynamics as a predictive framework for transport in time-dependent integrable systems.

Spin transport on the integrable XXZ chain

Shinya Ae

Using the Bethe ansatz method and generalized hydrodynamics (GHD), properties of the spin transport is analyzed for the integrable XXZ chain with the anisotropy 0 ≤ ∆ < 1.Our approach starts from reconstructing the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) equations for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin.We obtain the fusion hierarchy of the quantum transfer matrices (T -functions) in the arbitrary spin case, and we derive functional relations (T -and Y -systems) satisfied by the T -functions and certain combinations of them (Y -functions).Through analytical arguments, the Y -system is reduced to a set of non-linear integral equations, equivalent to the TBA equations. At first, we use the TBA equations for some higher-spin chains in order to examine the regular zero frequency contribution to the spin current correlation (spin dc conductivity) for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain. In the high temperature limit, we write down the dressed scattering kernels by one quasi-particle bare energies and exactly obtain the spin dc conductivity at zero magnetic field, which is proportional to the inverse temperature β at the β → 0 limit. We find that the high temperature proportionality constant σ reg 0 of the spin dc conductivity is discontinuous at all rational numbers of the anisotropy parameter p 0 = π/ cos -1 ∆ ≥ 2 with the gap increasing larger than the second power of growing magnetization on one quasiparticle. The isotropic ∆ = 1 point is exceptional.Close to this point, σ reg 0 slowly increases in proportion to the first power of the one quasi-particle magnetization. On the other hand, σ reg 0 is proportional to the second power of the same when p 0 approaches irrational numbers. At second, we examine the finite-temperature spin Drude weight for the integrable XXZ chain with arbitrary spin, where GHD methods are employed. We calculate the spin Drude weight at zero magnetic field, and we find a characteristic fractal-like structure of the Drude weight at arbitrary spin across a broad range of temperatures, similar to the spin-1/2 case.In our approach, the solutions to the TBA equations (i.e., the Y -functions) can be explicitly written in terms of the T -functions, thus allowing for a systematic calculation of the hightemperature limit of the Drude weight, as well as the spin dc conductivity in the spin 1/2 case. Emergent anomalous hydrodynamics at infinite temperature in a long-range XXZ model

Ang Yang, Jin-Lou Ma, Lei Ying

The conventional wisdom suggests that transports of conserved quantities in nonintegrable quantum many-body systems at high temperatures are diffusive. Recent study suggests a potential counterexample of this paradigm. We independently complement this counterexample by directly uncovering anomalous infinite-temperature hydrodynamics in a spin-1/2 XXZ chain with power-law couplings. This model, classified as nonintegrable due to its Wigner-Dyson level-spacing statistics in the random matrix theory, exhibits a surprising superdiffusive-ballistic-superdiffusive transport transition by varying the power-law exponent of couplings for a fixed anisotropy. Our findings are verified by multiple observables, including the spin-spin autocorrelator, mean-square displacement, and spin conductivity. Interestingly, we further quantify the degree of quantum chaos using the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the entanglement entropy distributions of the model's eigenstates and a random state. Remarkably, an observed local maximum in the divergence near the transition boundary suggests a link between anomalous hydrodynamics and a suppression of quantum chaos. This work offers another deep understanding of emergent anomalous transport phenomena in a wider range of nonintegrable quantum many-body systems.
