Abstract

Thermodynamic functions of the ideal Fermi gas at arbitrary temperatures are calculated using the standard Fermi-Stoner functions. The properties of the Fermi-Stoner functions are analyzed. The limiting cases of low-temperature and classical limits with taking into account quantum corrections and the special case of zero chemical potential are considered.

Thermodynamics of the Fermi Gas in a Quantum Well

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. A. Soroka

For the ideal Fermi gas that fills a quantum well confined by two parallel planes, there are calculated the thermodynamic characteristics in general form for arbitrary temperatures, namely: the thermodynamic potential, energy, entropy, equations of state, heat capacities and compressibilities. The distance between planes is considered as an additional thermodynamic variable. Owing to the anisotropy, the pressure of the Fermi gas along and transverse to the planes is different, so that the system is characterized by two equations of state and a set of different heat capacities. Limiting cases of low and high temperatures are considered. The temperature dependencies of the entropy and heat capacities at low temperatures remain linear, just as in the volume case, and their dependencies on the chemical potential and density undergo jumps at the beginning of the filling of new discrete levels. It is shown that the behavior of thermodynamic quantities with the distance between plates can be either oscillating or monotonic, depending on what quantity is assumed to be fixed: the volume or surface density. For high temperatures the corrections to thermodynamic quantities are obtained, which are proportional to the ratio of the thermal de Broglie wavelength to the distance between planes.

Thermodynamic coefficients of ideal Fermi gas

Alexey Kozharin, Pavel R. Levashov

Abstract We present analytical formulae for the first and second derivatives of the Helmholtz free energy of non‐relativistic ideal Fermi gas. Important thermodynamic quantities such as heat capacity, sound velocity, heat capacity ratio, and others are explicitly expressed through the derivatives. We demonstrate correct ideal Boltzmann gas and low‐temperature Fermi gas asymptotes and derive corrections to thermodynamic functions for these limiting cases. Numerical computations of thermodynamic properties of ideal Fermi gas can be accurately performed using the developed freely available Python module ifg.

Chemical potentials and thermodynamic characteristics of ideal Bose- and Fermi-gases in the region of quantum degeneracy

Andrii Sotnikov, K. V. Sereda, Yu. V. Slyusarenko

Calculations of chemical potentials for ideal monatomic gases with Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics as functions of temperature, across the temperature region that is typical for the collective quantum degeneracy effect, are presented. Numerical calculations are performed without any additional approximations, and explicit dependences of the chemical potentials on temperature are constructed at a fixed density of gas particles. Approximate polynomial dependences of chemical potentials on temperature are obtained that allow for the results to be used in further studies without re-applying the involved numerical methods. The ease of using the obtained representations is demonstrated on examples of deformation of distribution for a population of energy states at low temperatures, and on the impact of quantum statistics (exchange interaction) on the equations of state for ideal gases and some of the thermodynamic properties thereof. The results of this study essentially unify two opposite limiting cases in an intermediate region that are used to describe the equilibrium states of ideal gases, which are well known from university courses on statistical physics, thus adding value from an educational point of view.

Thermodynamic Properties of an Ideal Fermi Gas Trapped in a Two-Dimensional Space

Liu Jing-yi

Thermodynamic properties of an ideal Fermi gas in a two-dimensional space trapped in a generic power-law potential are studied, based on the local density approximation. The total energy E,Fermi energy ,chemical potential μ and heat capacity C in the high-and low-temperature approximations are derived. How these physical quantities depend on the external potential are discussed.

The thermodynamic properties of the ideal fermi gas

Yin Guo-sheng

They are discussed from a viewpoint of quantum statistics. It is found that the ideal Fermi gas tends to the classical limit at high temperature and exists in the way of a Fermi ball at low temperature.

THERMODYNAMICS OF THE FERMI GAS IN A NANOTUBE

Yu. M. Poluéktov, A. A. Soroka

For the ideal Fermi gas that fills the space inside a cylindrical tube, there are calculated the thermodynamic characteristics in general form for arbitrary temperatures, namely: the thermodynamic potential, energy, entropy, equations of state, heat capacities and compressibilities. All these quantities are expressed through the introduced standard functions and their derivatives. The radius of the tube is considered as an additional thermodynamic variable. It is shown that at low temperatures in the quasi-one-dimensional case the temperature dependencies of the entropy and heat capacities remain linear. The dependencies of the entropy and heat capacities on the chemical potential have sharp maximums at the points where the filling of a new discrete level begins. The character of dependencies of thermodynamic quantities on the tube radius proves to be qualitatively different in the cases of fixed linear and fixed total density. At the fixed linear density these dependencies are monotonous and at the fixed total density they have an oscillating character.
