Abstract

Abstract We investigate the classical-quantum correspondence of non-Hermitian Spin-orbit (SO)-coupled bosonic junctions, where an effective decay term is introduced in one of the two wells. Starting from the normalized two-point functions, we analytically demonstrate that the mean-field system has a classical Hamiltonian structure, and we successfully derive a non-Hermitian discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (Gross–Pitaevskii) equation. We discover that near the symmetry-breaking phase transition point, the correspondence between classical (mean-field) and quantum dynamics is more likely to break down. Our numerical simulations of the full quantum model, limited to a finite number of particles due to computational constraints, reveal that when the effective spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength takes half-integer values, atomic self-trapping in a non-lossy well consistently occurs regardless of the system parameters, and the corresponding quantum dynamics exhibit remarkable insensitivity to the number of particles in this scenario. Additionally, we reveal that in both the mean-field and many-particle models, the SOC effects can greatly promote the synchronous periodic oscillations between the spin-up and spin-down components, and this synchronous dynamic is closely related to symmetry.

Mean-Field Dynamics of Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

Yongping Zhang, Li Mao, Chuanwei Zhang

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the interaction between the spin and momentum of a quantum particle, is crucial for many important condensed matter phenomena. The recent experimental realization of SOC in neutral bosonic cold atoms provides a new and ideal platform for investigating spin-orbit coupled quantum many-body physics. In this Letter, we derive a generic Gross-Pitaevskii equation as the starting point for the study of many-body dynamics in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that different laser setups for realizing the same SOC may lead to different mean-field dynamics. Various ground state phases (stripe, phase separation, etc.) of the condensate are found in different parameter regions. A new oscillation period induced by the SOC, similar to the Zitterbewegung oscillation, is found in the center-of-mass motion of the condensate.

Quantum-classical correspondence for a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard dimer

Eva-Maria Graefe, Hans Jürgen Korsch, Astrid Elisa Niederle

We investigate the many-particle and mean-field correspondence for a non-Hermitian $N$-particle Bose-Hubbard dimer where a complex on-site energy describes an effective decay from one of the modes. Recently a generalized mean-field approximation for this non-Hermitian many-particle system yielding an alternative complex nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation was introduced. Here we give details of this mean-field approximation and show that the resulting dynamics can be expressed in a generalized canonical form that includes a metric gradient flow. The interplay of nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity introduces a qualitatively new behavior to the mean-field dynamics: The presence of the non-Hermiticity promotes the self-trapping transition, while damping the self-trapping oscillations, and the nonlinearity introduces a strong sensitivity to the initial conditions in the decay of the normalization. Here we present a complete characterization of the mean-field dynamics and the fixed point structure. We also investigate the full many-particle dynamics, which shows a rich variety of breakdown and revival as well as tunneling phenomena on top of the mean-field structure.

Spin Josephson effects of spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in a non-Hermitian double well

Jia Tang, Hu Zhou, Zhao‐Yun Zeng +5 more

Abstract In this paper, we investigate the spin and tunneling dynamics of a spin–orbit-coupled noninteracting Bose–Einstein condensate in a periodically driven non-Hermitian double-well potential. Under high-frequency driving, we obtain the effective time-averaged Hamiltonian by using the standard time-averaging method, and analytically calculate the Floquet quasienergies, revealing that the parity-time ( )-breaking phase transition appears even for arbitrarily small non-Hermitian parameters when the spin–orbit coupling strength takes half-integer value, irrespective of the values of other parameters used. When the system is -symmetric with balanced gain and loss, we find numerically and analytically that in the broken -symmetric regions, there will exist the net spin current together with a vanishing atomic current, if we drop the contribution of the exponential growth of the norm to the current behaviors. When the system is non- -symmetric, though the quasienergies are partial complex, a stable net spin current can be generated by controlling the periodic driving field, which is accompanied by a spatial localization of the condensate in the well with gain. The results deepen the understanding of non-Hermitian physics and could be useful for engineering a variety of devices for spintronics.

Controlling stable tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin–orbit coupled bosonic junction

Abstract In this paper, we study how to apply a periodic driving field to control stable spin tunneling in a non-Hermitian spin–orbit (SO) coupled bosonic double-well system. By means of a high-frequency approximation, we obtain the analytical Floquet solutions and their associated quasienergies and thus construct the general non-Floquet solutions of the dissipative SO coupled bosonic system. Based on detailed analysis of the Floquet quasienergy spectrum, the profound effect of system parameters and the periodic driving field on the stability of spin-dependent tunneling is investigated analytically and numerically for both balanced and unbalanced gain–loss between two wells. Under balanced gain and loss, we find that the stable spin-flipping tunneling is preferentially suppressed with the increase of gain–loss strength. When the ratio of Zeeman field strength to periodic driving frequency Ω/ω is even, there is a possibility that continuous stable parameter regions will exist. When Ω/ω is odd, nevertheless, only discrete stable parameter regions are found. Under unbalanced gain and loss, whether Ω/ω is even or odd, we can get parametric equilibrium conditions for the existence of stable spin tunneling. The results could be useful for the experiments of controlling stable spin transportation in a non-Hermitian SO coupled system.

Collective dynamics of a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Fang-Qi Hu, Jianjun Wang, Zi-Fa Yu +2 more

We study the collective dynamics of the spin-orbit coupled two pseudospin components of a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a quasi-one-dimensional harmonic potential, by using variational and directly numerical approach of binary mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The results show that, because of strong coupling of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Rabi coupling, and atomic interaction, the collective dynamics of the system behave as complex characters. When the Rabi coupling is absent, the density profiles of the system preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do harmonic oscillations. The amplitude of the collective oscillations increases with SOC. Furthermore, when the SOC strength increases, the dipole oscillations of the two pseudospin components undergo a transition from in-phase to out-of-phase oscillations. When the Rabi coupling present, there will exist a critical value of SOC strength (which depends on the Rabi coupling and atomic interaction). If the SOC strength is less than this critical value, the density profiles of the system can preserve the Gauss type and the wave packets do anharmonic (the frequency of dipole oscillations depends on SOC) oscillations synchronously (i.e., in-phase oscillations). However, if the SOC strength is larger than this critical value, the wave packets are dynamically fragmented and the stable dipole oscillations of the system can not exist. The collective dynamics of the system can be controlled by adjusting the atomic interaction, SOC, and Rabi-coupling strength.

Measure synchronization in a spin-orbit-coupled bosonic Josephson junction

Wen-Yuan Wang, Jie Liu, Libin Fu

We present measure synchronization (MS) in a bosonic Josephson junction with spin-orbit coupling. The two atomic hyperfine states are coupled by a Raman dressing scheme, and they are regarded as two orientations of a pseudo-spin-$1/2$ system. A feature specific to a spin-orbit-coupled (SOC) bosonic Josephson junction is that the transition from non-MS to MS dynamics can be modulated by Raman laser intensity, even in the absence of interspin atomic interaction. A phase diagram of non-MS and MS dynamics as functions of Raman laser intensity and Josephson tunneling amplitude is presented. Taking into account interspin atomic interactions, the system exhibits MS breaking dynamics resulting from the competition between intraspin and interspin atomic interactions. When interspin atomic interactions dominate in the competition, the system always exhibits MS dynamics. For interspin interaction weaker than intraspin interaction, a window for non-MS dynamics is present. Since SOC Bose-Einstein condensates provide a powerful platform for studies on physical problems in various fields, the study of MS dynamics is valuable in researching the collective coherent dynamical behavior in a spin-orbit-coupled bosonic Josephson junction.
