Abstract

Abstract We investigate the effect of the spin–orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings on the localization of the spin-1/2 condensate trapped in a one-dimensional random potential. Our studies reveal that the spin-dependent couplings create distinct localization regimes, resulting in various relations between localization and spin-related properties. First, we examine the localization in the linear condensate and find that the SO coupling can lead to a transition of the localized state from the ‘basin-like’ to the ‘void’ region of the potential. For a weak random potential upon an increase in the SO coupling, we find a re-entrant transition from a broad to narrow localized state and back at a higher SO coupling. Further, we analyze the competing role of inter-species and intra-species interactions on the localization of the condensate. We find the appearance of spin-dependent localization as the interactions increase beyond threshold values for a sufficiently strong disorder. Our findings on controlling spin-dependent localization may be useful for future ultracold atomic experiments and corresponding spin-related quantum technologies.

Anderson localization and quenched induced dynamics of spin orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate in a random potential

Z. Oztas, O Nabiollahi

Abstract We consider the localization and dynamical properties of a one dimensional spin orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensate trapped by a disordered speckle potential. We numerically solve coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equation to obtain ground sate solutions. The effects of spin–orbit coupling and detuning parameter on localization are investigated. It is found that the increase of spin–orbit coupling delocalizes the condensate while the increase of detuning favors localization. After achieving the numerical ground state solutions, we examine the quench induced dynamics of the condensate by the complete cessation of the spin–orbit coupling. We show that at parameters where the ground state is not localized, the dynamics of the system is chaotic.

Signature of localization–delocalization in collisional inhomogeneous spin-orbit coupled condensates

Swarup K. Sarkar, Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Tapan Mishra +2 more

Abstract We study the localization transition in spin–orbit (SO) coupled binary Bose–Einstein condensates with collisional inhomogeneous interaction trapped in a one-dimensional quasiperiodic potential. Our numerical analysis shows that the competition between the quasiperiodic disorder and inhomogeneous interaction leads to a localization–delocalization transition as the interaction strength is tuned from attractive to repulsive in nature. Furthermore, we analyse the combined effect of the SO and Rabi coupling strengths on the localization transition for different interaction strengths and obtain signatures of similar localization–delocalization transition as a function of SO coupling in the regime of weak interactions. We complement our numerical observation with the analytical model using the Gaussian variational approach. In the end, we show how the localization–delocalization is manifested in the quench dynamics of the condensate. Our study provides an indirect approach to achieve localization transition without tuning the quasiperiodic potential strength, but rather by tuning the inhomogeneity in the interaction.

Enhanced transport of spin-orbit-coupled Bose gases in disordered potentials

Yuchen Yue, C. A. R. Sá de Melo, Ian B. Spielman

Anderson localization is a single-particle localization phenomena in disordered media that is accompanied by an absence of diffusion. Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) describes an interaction between a particle's spin and its momentum that directly affects its energy dispersion, for example, creating dispersion relations with gaps and multiple local minima. We show theoretically that combining one-dimensional spin-orbit coupling with a transverse Zeeman field suppresses the effects of disorder, thereby increasing the localization length and conductivity. This increase results from a suppression of backscattering between states in the gap of the SOC dispersion relation. Here, we focus specifically on the interplay of disorder from an optical speckle potential and SOC generated by two-photon Raman processes in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. We first describe backscattering by using a Fermi golden rule approach, and then numerically confirm this picture by solving the time-dependent one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate with SOC and disorder. We find that on the tens of millisecond timescale of typical cold atom experiments moving in harmonic traps, initial states with momentum in the zero-momentum SOC gap evolve with negligible backscattering, while without SOC these same states rapidly localize.

On the ground state phases in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with weak repulsive interactions

Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Thangarasu Sriraman, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the ground-state phases of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus and with Rabi mixing in a quasi-one-dimension setting. We analyze the role of the parameters, namely, spin-orbit and Rabi couplings, and inter- and intra-species interactions in a weak harmonic trap.

Localization-delocalization transition in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Chunyan Li, Fangwei Ye, Yaroslav V. Kartashov +2 more

We address the impact of the spin-orbit (SO) coupling on the localization-delocalization-transition (LDT) in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic potential. We find that SO coupling significantly alters the threshold depth of the one of sublattices above which the lowest eigenstates transform from delocalizated into localized. For some moderate coupling strengths the threshold is strongly reduced, which is explained by the SO coupling-induced band flattening in one of the sub-lattices. We explain why simultaneous Rabi and SO coupling are necessary ingredients for LDT threshold cancellation and show that strong SO coupling drives the system into the state where its evolution becomes similar to the evolution of a one-component system. We also find that defocusing nonlinearity can lead to localization of the states which are delocalized in the linear limit.

Abstract We study the miscibility properties and ground state phases of two-component spin–orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in a harmonic trap with strong axial confinement. By numerically solving the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations in the two-dimensional setting, we analyze the SO-coupled BECs for two possible permutations of the intra- and interspecies interactions, namely (i) weak intra- and weak interspecies interactions (W–W) and (ii) weak intra- and strong interspecies interactions (W–S). Considering the density overlap integral as a miscibility order parameter, we investigate the miscible–immiscible transition by varying the coupling parameters. We obtain various ground state phases, including plane wave, half quantum vortex, elongated plane wave, and different stripe wave patterns for W–W interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, an increase in SO coupling strength leads to the transition from the fully miscible to the partially miscible state. We also characterize different ground states in the coupling parameter space using the root mean square sizes of the condensate. The spin density vector for the ground state phases exhibits density, quadrupole and dipole like spin polarizations. For the W–S interaction, in addition to that observed in the W–W case, we witness semi vortex, mixed mode, and shell-like immiscible phases. We notice a wide variety of spin polarizations, such as density, dipole, quadrupole, symbiotic, necklace, and stripe-like patterns for the W–S case. A detailed investigation in the coupling parameter space indicates immiscible to miscible state phase transition upon varying the Rabi coupling for a fixed Rashba SO coupling. The critical Rabi coupling for the immiscible–miscible phase transition decreases upon increasing the SO coupling strength.
