Abstract

Abstract We study the miscibility properties and ground state phases of two-component spin–orbit (SO) coupled Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in a harmonic trap with strong axial confinement. By numerically solving the coupled Gross–Pitaevskii equations in the two-dimensional setting, we analyze the SO-coupled BECs for two possible permutations of the intra- and interspecies interactions, namely (i) weak intra- and weak interspecies interactions (W–W) and (ii) weak intra- and strong interspecies interactions (W–S). Considering the density overlap integral as a miscibility order parameter, we investigate the miscible–immiscible transition by varying the coupling parameters. We obtain various ground state phases, including plane wave, half quantum vortex, elongated plane wave, and different stripe wave patterns for W–W interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, an increase in SO coupling strength leads to the transition from the fully miscible to the partially miscible state. We also characterize different ground states in the coupling parameter space using the root mean square sizes of the condensate. The spin density vector for the ground state phases exhibits density, quadrupole and dipole like spin polarizations. For the W–S interaction, in addition to that observed in the W–W case, we witness semi vortex, mixed mode, and shell-like immiscible phases. We notice a wide variety of spin polarizations, such as density, dipole, quadrupole, symbiotic, necklace, and stripe-like patterns for the W–S case. A detailed investigation in the coupling parameter space indicates immiscible to miscible state phase transition upon varying the Rabi coupling for a fixed Rashba SO coupling. The critical Rabi coupling for the immiscible–miscible phase transition decreases upon increasing the SO coupling strength.

Ground state phases in Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Thangarasu Sriraman, Paulsamy Muruganandam

We study the role of coupling parameters on the ground state phases of spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with an equal combination of Rashba and Dresselhaus coupling strength with Rabi mixing using quasi-one-dimensional coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. By considering weak repulsive inter- and intra-species interactions between the condensate atoms, we investigate the contribution of spin-orbit and Rabi coupling parameters on the phases. We find that for a finite Rabi coupling strength, the system undergoes a phase transition from double plane-wave phase to stripe wave phase at a critical spin-orbit coupling strength.

Vortex states and spin textures of rotating spin–orbit-coupled Bose–Einstein condensates in a toroidal trap

Huan Wang, Linghua Wen, Hui Yang +2 more

Abstract We consider the ground-state properties of Rashba spin–orbit-coupled pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose–Einstein condensates (BECs) in a rotating two-dimensional (2D) toroidal trap. In the absence of spin–orbit coupling (SOC), the increasing rotation frequency enhances the creation of giant vortices for the initially miscible BECs, while it can lead to the formation of semiring density patterns with irregular hidden vortex structures for the initially immiscible BECs. Without rotation, strong 2D isotropic SOC yields a heliciform-stripe phase for the initially immiscible BECs. Combined effects of rotation, SOC, and interatomic interactions on the vortex structures and typical spin textures of the ground state of the system are discussed systematically. In particular, for a fixed rotation frequency above the critical value, the increasing isotropic SOC favors a visible vortex necklace in each component which is accompanied by a hidden giant vortex plus a (several) hidden vortex necklace(s) in the central region. In the case of one-dimensional anisotropic SOC, large SOC strength results in the generation of hidden linear vortex string and the transition from initial component separation (component mixing) to component mixing (component separation). Furthermore, the peculiar spin textures including skyrmion lattice, skyrmion pair and skyrmion string are revealed in this system.

Zero-momentum coupling induced transitions of ground states in Rashba spin–orbit coupled Bose–Einstein condensates

Jingjing Jin, Suying Zhang, Wei Han

We investigate the transitions of ground states induced by zero momentum (ZM) coupling in pseudospin-1/2 Rashba spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a harmonic trap. In a weak harmonic trap, the condensate presents a plane wave (PW) state, a stripe state or a spin polarized ZM state, and the particle distribution of the stripe state is weighted equally at two points in the momentum space without ZM coupling. The presence of ZM coupling induces an imbalanced particle distribution in the momentum space, and leads to the decrease of the amplitude of the stripe state. When its strength exceeds a critical value, the system experiences the transition from stripe phase to PW phase. The boundary of these two phases is shifted and a new phase diagram spanned by the ZM coupling and the interatomic interactions is obtained. The presence of ZM coupling can also achieve the transition from ZM phase to PW phase. In a strong harmonic trap, the condensate exhibits a vortex lattice state without ZM coupling. For the positive effective Rabi frequency of ZM coupling, the condensate is driven from a vortex lattice state to a vortex-free lattice state and finally to a PW state with the increase of coupling strength. In addition, for the negative effective Rabi frequency, the condensate is driven from a vortex lattice state to a stripe state, and finally to a PW state. The stripe state found in the strong harmonic trap is different from that in previous works because of its nonzero superfluid velocity along the stripes. We also discuss the influences of the ZM coupling on the spin textures, and indicate that the spin textures are squeezed transversely by the ZM coupling.

Emergence of spin-mixed superstripe phases in spin-orbit-coupled spin-1 condensates

Sanu Kumar Gangwar, Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Paulsamy Muruganandam +1 more

We numerically investigate the ground state phases and quench dynamics of spin-orbit coupled spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. For finite Rabi coupling, the system exhibits zero-momentum, elongated zero-momentum, and stripe phases, while in the limit $Ω\rightarrow 0$, the superstripe wave phases emerge. Varying the attractive density-density ($c_0$) and spin-exchange ($c_2$) interactions induces the transition from stripe and superstripe phases to the elongated zero-momentum phase, characterized by miscibility and polarization. The condensate remains miscible in the zero-momentum phase and partially miscible for the elongated, stripe, and superstripe phases. Quenching in Rabi coupling stabilizes the condensate, while spin-orbit coupling quenching leads to fluctuations or the formation of complex patterns, with the stripe phase exhibiting the vanishing of the zeroth spin component over time. Our results may offer valuable insights into engineering exotic quantum phases in ultracold atomic gases.

Effect of Rashba spin-orbit and Rabi couplings on the excitation spectrum of binary Bose-Einstein condensates

Rajamanickam Ravisankar, Henrique Fabrelli, A. Gammal +2 more

We present the collective excitation spectrum analysis of binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) with spin-orbit (SO) and Rabi couplings in a quasi-two-dimensional system. In particular, we investigate the role of SO and Rabi coupling strengths in determining the dynamical stability of the coupled BECs using Bogoliubov--de Gennes (BdG) theory. Using the eigenenergy of the BdG spectrum, we confirm the existence of phonon, roton, and maxon modes with weak repulsive intra- and interspecies contact interactions. The depth of the minimum corresponding to the roton mode strongly depends on the coupling strength. We find that the increase of the SO coupling leads to instability, while the increase in the Rabi coupling stabilizes the system. Also, the eigenvectors of the BdG spectrum indicate the presence of a densitylike mode in the stable regime and spinlike modes in the unstable regimes. A phase diagram demonstrating the stability regime in the plane of SO and Rabi coupling strengths is obtained. Finally, we complement the observation of the excitation spectrum with the direct numerical simulation results of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations.

Half-quantum vortex state in a spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

B. Ramachandhran, Bogdan Opanchuk, Xia-Ji Liu +3 more

We theoretically investigate the condensate state and collective excitations of a two-component Bose gas in a two-dimensional harmonic trap subject to isotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the weakly interacting regime when the interspecies interaction is larger than the intraspecies interaction (${g}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}>g$), we find that the condensate ground state has a half-quantum angular momentum vortex configuration with spatial rotational symmetry and skyrmion-type spin texture. Upon increasing the interatomic interaction beyond a threshold ${g}_{c}$, the ground state starts to involve higher-order angular momentum components and thus breaks rotational symmetry. In the case of ${g}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<g$, the condensate becomes unstable toward the superposition of two degenerate half-quantum vortex states. Both instabilities (at $g>{g}_{c}$ and ${g}_{\ensuremath{\uparrow}\ensuremath{\downarrow}}<g$) can be determined by solving the Bogoliubov equations for collective density oscillations of the half-quantum vortex state and by analyzing the softening of mode frequencies. We obtain the phase diagram as a function of the interatomic interactions and the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, we directly simulate the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation to examine the dynamical properties of the system. Finally, we investigate the stability of the half-quantum vortex state against both trap anisotropy and anisotropy in the spin-orbit coupling.
