Abstract

We propose and analyze a deformation of the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ lattice ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge theory that preserves the noninvertible Wegner duality symmetry at the self-dual point. We identify a frustration-free point along this deformation where there are nine exactly degenerate ground states (on a periodic cubic lattice) even at finite volume. One of these ground states is a trivial product state and the rest are the topologically ordered ground states of the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ toric code, and they are exchanged by the Wegner duality. We also prove that the frustration-free point is gapped in the thermodynamic limit. Our model, therefore, realizes a gapped phase with spontaneously broken Wegner duality symmetry. Furthermore, by imposing the Gauss law constraints energetically, all the above features can be realized on a tensor product Hilbert space. Finally, we discuss a generalization of this deformation to the $3+1\mathrm{d}$ lattice ${\mathbb{Z}}_{N}$ gauge theory and conjecture the possible phase diagram.

Self-dual $S_3$ gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Chong Wang, Ashvin Vishwanath

Electric-magnetic self-duality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the $S_3$ quantum double $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the $\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2$ anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon $C$ and fluxon $F$, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}$-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ into distinct gapped phases. We analyze these transitions by three independent methods: category-theoretic anyon condensation, microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, and Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, which all agree, yielding a unified picture. These examples motivate a minimal-condensation principle: proliferating a bosonic anyon generically drives condensation of a minimal condensable algebra containing it, with symmetry-related condensates appearing as degenerate vacua that spontaneously break the anyon-permutation symmetry. Our model construction extends to an infinite family of self-dual dihedral quantum doubles $\mathcal{D}(D_{2n})$. Notably, each model is sign-problem-free, opening the door to large-scale numerical exploration of the phases of non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theories.

Deformed LDPC codes with spontaneously broken non-invertible duality symmetries

Pranay Gorantla, Tzu-Chen Huang

Low-density parity check (LDPC) codes are a well known class of Pauli stabiliser Hamiltonians that furnish fixed-point realisations of nontrivial gapped phases such as symmetry breaking and topologically ordered (including fracton) phases. In this work, we propose symmetry-preserving deformations of these models, in the presence of a transverse field, and identify special points along the deformations with interesting features: (i) the special point is frustration-free, (ii) its ground states include a product state and the code space of the underlying code, and (iii) it remains gapped in the thermodynamic (infinite volume) limit. So the special point realises a first-order transition between (or the coexistence of) the trivial gapped phase and the nontrivial gapped phase associated with the code. In addition, if the original model has a non-invertible duality symmetry, then so does the deformed model. In this case, the duality symmetry is spontaneously broken at the special point, consistent with the associated anomaly. A key step in proving the gap is a coarse-graining/blocking procedure on the Tanner graph of the code that allows us to apply the martingale method successfully. Our model, therefore, provides the first application of the martingale method to a frustration-free model, that is not commuting projector, defined on an arbitrary Tanner graph. We also discuss several familiar examples on Euclidean spatial lattice. Of particular interest is the 2+1d transverse field Ising model: while there is no non-invertible duality symmetry in this case, our results, together with known numerical results, suggest the existence of a tricritical point in the phase diagram.

Tensor Networks for Noninvertible Symmetries in 3 + 1 D and Beyond

Pranay Gorantla, Shu-Heng Shao, Nathanan Tantivasadakarn

Tensor networks provide a natural language for noninvertible symmetries in general Hamiltonian lattice models. We use ZX-diagrams, which are tensor network presentations of quantum circuits, to define a noninvertible operator implementing the Wegner duality in 3 + 1 D lattice Z 2 gauge theory. The noninvertible algebra, which mixes with lattice translations, can be efficiently computed using ZX-calculus. We further deform the Z 2 gauge theory while preserving the duality and find a model with nine exactly degenerate ground states on a torus, consistent with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis-type constraint imposed by the symmetry. Finally, we provide a ZX-diagram presentation of the noninvertible duality operators (including noninvertible parity and reflection symmetries) of generalized Ising models based on graphs, encompassing the 1 + 1 D Ising model, the three-spin Ising model, the Ashkin-Teller model, and the 2 + 1 D plaquette Ising model. The mixing (or lack thereof) with spatial symmetries is understood from a unifying perspective based on graph theory.

Non-invertible and higher-form symmetries in 2+1d lattice gauge theories

Yichul Choi, Yaman Sanghavi, Shu-Heng Shao +1 more

We explore exact generalized symmetries in the standard 2+1d lattice \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory coupled to the Ising model, and compare them with their continuum field theory counterparts. One model has a (non-anomalous) non-invertible symmetry, and we identify two distinct non-invertible symmetry protected topological phases. The non-invertible algebra involves a lattice condensation operator, which creates a toric code ground state from a product state. Another model has a mixed anomaly between a 1-form symmetry and an ordinary symmetry. This anomaly enforces a nontrivial transition in the phase diagram, consistent with the “Higgs=SPT” proposal. Finally, we discuss how the symmetries and anomalies in these two models are related by gauging, which is a 2+1d version of the Kennedy-Tasaki transformation.

Lattice 2-group symmetries: operators, defects, and gauging

Lucas Z. Brito, Salvatore D. Pace

We construct and study lattice realizations of finite 2-group symmetries in ${2+1}$d quantum lattice systems with finite-dimensional tensor-product Hilbert spaces. We focus on two broad classes of 2-groups with 0-form symmetry group $G$ and 1-form symmetry group $A$: split 2-groups with trivial Postnikov class ${[β]\in\mathcal{H}^3(G,A)}$, and central 2-groups with trivial action ${ρ\colon G\to\text{Aut}(A)}$. In both cases, we construct symmetry operators on the full tensor-product Hilbert space that become 2-group symmetry operators when restricted to the topological subspace of the lattice $A$ 1-form symmetry. While the lattice split 2-group symmetry operators are onsite, the lattice central 2-group symmetry operators are not, and can only be made onsite after introducing ancillae. We extensively explore various manifestations of $ρ$ and $[β]$ for these lattice 2-group symmetry operators and demonstrate their agreement with expectations from quantum field theory. These manifestations arise in the transformation of operators carrying symmetry charge, the structure of lattice 2-group symmetry defects, and the dual fusion 2-category symmetries obtained by gauging the lattice 2-group symmetries. We further propose families of local symmetric Hamiltonians for both classes of lattice 2-group symmetries and identify exactly solvable limits lying in phases with spontaneous 2-group symmetry breaking and nontrivial symmetry-enriched topological order. In one such limit, the gauged Hamiltonians are exactly solvable lattice realizations of the corresponding 2-group gauge theories, whose ground-state degeneracies we calculate.

Z2 Lattice Gauge Theory on Non-trivial Topology and Its Quantum Simulation

Jiaqi Hu, Shu Tian, Xiaopeng Cui +3 more

Wegner duality is essential for Z2 lattice gauge theory, yet the duality on non-trivial topologies has remained implicit. We extend Wegner duality to arbitrary topology and dimension, obtaining a new class of Ising models, in which topology is encoded in non-local domain-wall patterns. Without the overhead of gauge constraints, simulating this model on an L*L torus requires only L*L qubits with two-body couplings, halving the conventional four-body coupled 2L*L qubits, enabling full experimental realization of Z2 lattice gauge theory on near-term devices.
