Volume changing symmetries by matrix product operators

Abstract

Abstract We consider spin chain models with exotic symmetries that change the length of the spin chain. It is known that the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain at the supersymmetric point Δ = − 1 / 2 possesses such a symmetry: it is given by the supersymmetry generators, which change the length of the chain by one unit. We show that volume changing symmetries exist also in other spin chain models, and that they can be constructed using a special tensor network, which is a simple generalization of a Matrix Product Operator (MPO). As examples we consider the folded XXZ model and its perturbations, and also a new hopping model that is defined on constrained Hilbert spaces. We show that the volume changing symmetries are not related to integrability: the symmetries can survive even non-integrable perturbations. We also show that the known supersymmetry generator of the XXZ chain with Δ = − 1 / 2 can also be expressed as a generalized MPO.

Two-parameter families of matrix product operator integrals of motion in Heisenberg spin chains

Vsevolod I. Yashin

Recently, Fendley et al. (2025) [arXiv:2511.04674] revealed a new simple way to demonstrate the integrability of XYZ Heisenberg model by constructing a one-parameter family of integrals of motion in the matrix product operator (MPO) form with bond dimension 4. In this work, I report on the discovery of two-parameter families of MPOs that commute with Heisenberg spin chain Hamiltonian in case of various anisotropies (XXX, XXZ, XX, XY and XYZ). These solutions are connected by taking appropriate limits. For all cases except XYZ, I also write down Floquet charges of two-step Floquet protocols corresponding to the Trotterization. I describe a symbolic algebra approach for finding such integrals of motion and speculate about possible generalizations and applications.

Matrix-product operator dualities in integrable lattice models

Yuan Miao, Andras Molnar, Nick G. Jones

Matrix-product operators (MPOs) appear throughout the study of integrable lattice models, notably as the transfer matrices. They can also be used as transformations to construct dualities between such models, both invertible (including unitary) and non-invertible (including discrete gauging). We analyse how the local Yang--Baxter integrable structures are modified under such dualities. We see that the $\check{R}$-matrix, that appears in the baxterization approach to integrability, transforms in a simple manner. We further argue for a broad class of MPO dualities that the usual Yang--Baxter $R$-matrix should be extended. This extended $R$-matrix satisfies modified algebraic relations, including a modified Yang--Baxter algebra previously identified in the unitary case, that altogether give a local integrable structure underlying the commuting transfer matrices of the dual model. We illustrate these results with two case studies, analysing an invertible unitary MPO and a non-invertible MPO both applied to the canonical XXZ spin chain. The former is the cluster entangler, arising in the study of symmetry-protected topological phases, while the latter is the Kramers--Wannier duality. We show several results for MPOs with exact MPO inverses that are of independent interest.

On spin chains and field theories

Radu Roiban

We point out that the existence of global symmetries in a field theory is not an essential ingredient in its relation with an integrable model. We describe an obvious construction which, given an integrable spin chain, yields a field theory whose 1-loop scale transformations are generated by the spin chain Hamiltonian. We also identify a necessary condition for a given field theory to be related to an integrable spin chain. As an example, we describe an anisotropic and parity-breaking generalization of the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain and its associated field theory. The system has no nonabelian global symmetries and does not admit a supersymmetric extension without the introduction of more propagating bosonic fields. For the case of a 2-state chain we find the spectrum and the eigenstates. For certain values of its coupling constants the field theory associated to this general type of chain is the bosonic sector of the Leigh-Strassler deformation of N=4 SYM theory.

Open spin chains with dynamic lattice supersymmetry

Christian Hagendorf, Jean Liénardy

Abstract The quantum spin 1/2 XXZ chain with anisotropy parameter Δ = − 1 / 2 possesses a dynamic supersymmetry on the lattice. This supersymmetry and a generalisation to higher spin are investigated in the case of open spin chains. A family of non-diagonal boundary interactions that are compatible with the lattice supersymmetry and depend on several parameters is constructed. The cohomology of the corresponding supercharges is explicitly computed as a function of the parameters and the length of the chain. This cohomology is shown to be non-trivial for certain specific values of the parameters that lead to diagonal boundary interactions. For spin 1/2, they were previously studied by Fendley and Yang. The non-trivial cohomology implies that the spin-chain ground states are supersymmetry singlets. Special scalar products involving an arbitrary number of these supersymmetry singlets for chains of different lengths are exactly computed. In the case of spin 1/2, the scalar products are used to determine the logarithmic bipartite fidelity. Its scaling limit is shown to match the predictions of conformal field theory.

Matrix product operator representations for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain

Kyoichi Yamada, Kohei Fukai

We present the explicit expressions for the matrix product operator (MPO) representation for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain. The bond dimension of the MPO grows linearly with the locality of the charges. The MPO has more simple form than the local charges themselves, and their Catalan tree patterns naturally emerge from the matrix products. The MPO representation of local conserved quantities is generalized to the integrable SU(N) invariant spin chain.

Integrable spin chains and the Clifford group

Nick G. Jones, Noah Linden

We construct new families of spin chain Hamiltonians that are local, integrable, and translationally invariant. To do so, we make use of the Clifford group that arises in quantum information theory. We consider translation invariant Clifford group transformations that can be described by matrix product operators (MPOs). We classify translation invariant Clifford group transformations that consist of a shift operator and an MPO of bond dimension two—this includes transformations that preserve locality of all Hamiltonians and those that lead to non-local images of particular operators but, nevertheless, preserve locality of certain Hamiltonians. We characterize translation invariant Clifford group transformations that take single-site Pauli operators to local operators on at most five sites—examples of Quantum Cellular Automata—leading to a discrete family of Hamiltonians that are equivalent to the canonical XXZ model under such transformations. For spin chains solvable by the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we explain how conjugating by an MPO affects the underlying integrable structure. This allows us to relate our results to the usual classifications of integrable Hamiltonians. We also treat the case of spin chains solvable by free fermions.
