Matrix product operator representations for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain

Abstract

We present the explicit expressions for the matrix product operator (MPO) representation for the local conserved quantities of the Heisenberg chain. The bond dimension of the MPO grows linearly with the locality of the charges. The MPO has more simple form than the local charges themselves, and their Catalan tree patterns naturally emerge from the matrix products. The MPO representation of local conserved quantities is generalized to the integrable SU(N) invariant spin chain.

Matrix product operator representations for the local conserved quantities of the spin-$1/2$ XYZ chain

Kohei Fukai, Kyoichi Yamada

We present explicit matrix product operator (MPO) representations for the local conserved quantities of the spin-$1/2$ XYZ chain. Through these MPO representations, we simplify the coefficients appearing in the local conserved quantities originally derived by one of the authors, and reveal their combinatorial meaning: the coefficients prove to be a polynomial generalization of the Catalan numbers, given by weighted sums over monotone lattice paths. We also prove that a single recurrence relation for the coefficients guarantees the conservation law. We further show that these MPO representations can also be recovered from a product of two eight-vertex transfer matrices built from Baxter's R-matrix, providing the first direct connection between the R-matrix formalism and closed-form expressions for all local conserved quantities. We also obtain a simple Lax operator for the XYZ chain that, unlike Baxter's R-matrix, involves no elliptic functions.

Study of local conserved quantities in the one-dimensional Hubbard model

Kohei Fukai

In this thesis, I study the local charges $\{Q_k\}$ in the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which is an integrable system used for theoretical studies of non-perturbative effects in strongly correlated electron systems. I obtained their explicit expressions in a closed form. An expression of the $k$-local charge $Q_k$ for $k > 5$, where $k$ denotes the support, had been unknown in previous studies. I find that $Q_k$ is a linear combination of a particular kind of products of the hopping terms. I introduce a diagrammatic notation to represent these products efficiently, which enables the prediction of the general formula of the local charges. These linear combinations have non-trivial coefficients for $k > 5$, and some of the coefficients were proved to be identical to the generalized Catalan numbers, which also appear in the local charges of the Heisenberg chain. I derive the recursion equation for these coefficients. I also prove that the obtained local charges are exhaustive. Thus, any local charge is written as a linear combination of $\{Q_k\}$. Although the completeness of the local charges is a natural conjecture in the transfer-matrix formulation, its proof has not been presented for almost all cases. Lastly, I emphasize that this is the first study demonstrating general explicit expressions of the local charges for an electron system that lacks the boost operator.

On integrable matrix product operators with bond dimensionD= 4

Hosho Katsura

We construct and study a two-parameter family of matrix product operators of bond dimension $D=4$. The operators $M(x,y)$ act on $({\mathbb C}_2)^{\otimes N}$, i.e., the space of states of a spin-$1/2$ chain of length $N$. For the particular values of the parameters: $x=1/3$ and $y=1/\sqrt{3}$, the operator turns out to be proportional to the square root of the reduced density matrix of the valence-bond-solid state on a hexagonal ladder. We show that $M(x,y)$ has several interesting properties when $(x,y)$ lies on the unit circle centered at the origin: $x^2 + y^2=1$. In this case, we find that $M(x,y)$ commutes with the Hamiltonian and all the conserved charges of the isotropic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg chain. Moreover, $M(x_1,y_1)$ and $M(x_2,y_2)$ are mutually commuting if $x^2_i + y^2_i=1$ for both $i=1$ and $2$. These remarkable properties of $M(x,y)$ are proved as a consequence of the Yang-Baxter equation.

Two-parameter families of matrix product operator integrals of motion in Heisenberg spin chains

Vsevolod I. Yashin

Recently, Fendley et al. (2025) [arXiv:2511.04674] revealed a new simple way to demonstrate the integrability of XYZ Heisenberg model by constructing a one-parameter family of integrals of motion in the matrix product operator (MPO) form with bond dimension 4. In this work, I report on the discovery of two-parameter families of MPOs that commute with Heisenberg spin chain Hamiltonian in case of various anisotropies (XXX, XXZ, XX, XY and XYZ). These solutions are connected by taking appropriate limits. For all cases except XYZ, I also write down Floquet charges of two-step Floquet protocols corresponding to the Trotterization. I describe a symbolic algebra approach for finding such integrals of motion and speculate about possible generalizations and applications.

Integrable spin chains and the Clifford group

Nick G. Jones, Noah Linden

We construct new families of spin chain Hamiltonians that are local, integrable, and translationally invariant. To do so, we make use of the Clifford group that arises in quantum information theory. We consider translation invariant Clifford group transformations that can be described by matrix product operators (MPOs). We classify translation invariant Clifford group transformations that consist of a shift operator and an MPO of bond dimension two—this includes transformations that preserve locality of all Hamiltonians and those that lead to non-local images of particular operators but, nevertheless, preserve locality of certain Hamiltonians. We characterize translation invariant Clifford group transformations that take single-site Pauli operators to local operators on at most five sites—examples of Quantum Cellular Automata—leading to a discrete family of Hamiltonians that are equivalent to the canonical XXZ model under such transformations. For spin chains solvable by the algebraic Bethe ansatz, we explain how conjugating by an MPO affects the underlying integrable structure. This allows us to relate our results to the usual classifications of integrable Hamiltonians. We also treat the case of spin chains solvable by free fermions.

Automated construction of $U(1)$-invariant matrix-product operators from graph representations

Sebastian Paeckel, Thomas Köhler, Salvatore R. Manmana

We present an algorithmic construction scheme for matrix-product-operator (MPO) representations of arbitrary U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant operators whenever there is an expression of the local structure in terms of a finite-states machine (FSM). Given a set of local operators as building blocks, the method automatizes two major steps when constructing a U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant MPO representation: (i) the bookkeeping of auxiliary bond-index shifts arising from the application of operators changing the local quantum numbers and (ii) the appearance of phase factors due to particular commutation rules. The automatization is achieved by post-processing the operator strings generated by the FSM. Consequently, MPO representations of various types of U(1) U ( 1 ) -invariant operators can be constructed generically in MPS algorithms reducing the necessity of expensive MPO arithmetics. This is demonstrated by generating arbitrary products of operators in terms of FSM, from which we obtain exact MPO representations for the variance of the Hamiltonian of a S=1 S = 1 Heisenberg chain.
