Abstract

We theoretically investigate the fusion rules of Majorana Kramers pairs in time-reversal invariant topological superconductors. We find that the fusion of Majorana Kramers pairs is a process that Ising anyons fuse independently in the two distinct time-reversal sectors. Considering the full fusion including the initialization and the fusion, we explore the observation of a supersymmetry that emerges in time-reversal invariant topological superconductors, and design the schemes for the nontrivial fusion and the trivial fusion to show the non-Abelian statistics of Majorana Kramers pairs. We also show the possible influence of local adiabatic mixing on the fusion can generally be negligible and the differentiation between distinct fusion processes remains feasible even in the presence of such mixing. Our proposals are applied in ${d}_{{x}^{2}\ensuremath{-}{y}^{2}}$-wave topological superconductors, and the theoretical framework can be extended to the fusion of multiple Majorana zero modes protected by unitary symmetry.

Symmetry-protected non-Abelian braiding of Majorana Kramers pairs

Pin Gao, Yingping He, Xiong-Jun Liu

We develop a complete theory for symmetry protected non-Abelian statistics of Majorana Kramers' pairs (MKPs) in time-reversal (TR) invariant topological superconductors, with fundamental results being uncovered. By introducing an effective Hamiltonian approach to describe the braiding of MKPs, we show that the non-Abelian braiding is protected when the effective Hamiltonian exhibits a new TR-like antiunitary symmetry, which is satisfied if the system is free of dynamical noise. Importantly, even the dynamical noise cannot cause error in braiding, unless the noise correlation function breaks a dynamical TR symmetry. This is a profound result and generalizes the TR symmetry protection of MKPs to the dynamical regime. Moreover, the resulted error by noise is shown to be a higher-order effect, compared with the decoherence of Majorana qubits without TR symmetry protection. This study completes the theory of symmetry-protected non-Abelian statistics of MKPs, and shows that the non-Abelian braiding of MKPs is well observable and may have versatile applications to future quantum computation technologies.

Local Adiabatic Mixing of Kramers Pairs of Majorana Bound States

Konrad Wölms, Ady Stern, Karsten Flensberg

We consider Kramers pairs of Majorana bound states under adiabatic time evolution. This is important for the prospects of using such bound states as parity qubits. We show that local adiabatic perturbations can cause a rotation in the space spanned by the Kramers pair. Hence, the quantum information is unprotected against local perturbations, in contrast to the case of single localized Majorana bound states in systems with broken time reversal symmetry. We give an analytical and a numerical example for such a rotation, and specify sufficient conditions under which a rotation is avoided. We give a general scheme for determining when these conditions are satisfied and exemplify it with a general model of a quasi-1D time reversal symmetric topological superconductor.

Time-reversal symmetric Kitaev model and topological superconductor in two dimensions

Ryota Nakai, Shinsei Ryu, Akira Furusaki

A time-reversal invariant Kitaev-type model is introduced in which spins (Dirac matrices) on the square lattice interact via anisotropic nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions. The model is exactly solved by mapping it onto a tight-binding model of free Majorana fermions coupled with static ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ gauge fields. The Majorana fermion model can be viewed as a model of time-reversal-invariant superconductor and is classified as a member of symmetry class DIII in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification. The ground-state phase diagram has two topologically distinct gapped phases which are distinguished by a ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ topological invariant. The topologically nontrivial phase supports both a Kramers' pair of gapless Majorana edge modes at the boundary and a Kramers' pair of zero-energy Majorana states bound to a 0-flux vortex in the $\ensuremath{\pi}$-flux background. Power-law decaying correlation functions of spins along the edge are obtained by taking the gapless Majorana edge modes into account. The model is also defined on the one-dimension ladder, in which case again the ground-state phase diagram has ${\mathbb{Z}}_{2}$ trivial and nontrivial phases.

Unveiling nontrivial fusion rule of Majorana zero mode using a fermionic mode

Yu Zhang, Xiaoyu Zhu, Chunhui Li +3 more

Abstract Fusing Majorana zero modes (MZMs) leads to multiple outcomes, a property unique to non-Abelian anyons. The successful demonstration of this nontrivial fusion rule would be a hallmark for the development of topological quantum computation. Here, we propose that such fusion can be achieved by simply attaching a fermionic mode to a single Majorana zero mode. By modulation of the energy level of the fermionic mode (FM) as well as its coupling with MZM in different sequences, we show that a zero or integer charge pumping can be realized when different fusion loops are chosen. Such fusion loops are intimately related with the nontrivial fusion rule of Majorana modes and are solely determined by the crossings at zero energy in the parameter space. Finally, we demonstrate our proposal in a nanowire-based topological superconductor coupled to a quantum dot. We show that charge pumping is robust for MZMs in the realistic system irrespective of the initial condition of FM state.

Fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes

Themba Hodge, Kieu Quang Tuan, Jasmin Bedow +3 more

Braiding and fusion of Majorana zero modes are key elements of any future topological Majorana-based quantum computer. Here, we investigate the fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes in the spinless Kitaev model, as well as in a spinful model describing magnet-superconductor hybrid structures. We consider various scenarios allowing us to reproduce the fusion rules of the Ising anyon model. Particular emphasis is given to the charge of the fermion obtained after fusing two Majorana zero modes: as long as it remains on the superconductor, charge quantization is absent. When moving the fermion to a non-superconducting region, such as a quantum dot, nearly-quantized charge can be measured. Our findings confirm for both platforms that fusion dynamics of Majorana zero modes can indeed be used for the readout of Majorana qubits.

Majorana Doublets, Flat Bands, and Dirac Nodes in s -Wave Superfluids

Haiping Hu, Fan Zhang, Chuanwei Zhang

Topological superfluids protected by mirror and time-reversal symmetries are exotic states of matter possessing Majorana Kramers pairs (MKPs), yet their realizations have long been hindered by the requirement of unconventional pairing. We propose to realize such a topological superfluid by utilizing s-wave pairing and emergent mirror and time-reversal symmetries in two coupled 1D ultracold atomic Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling. By stacking such systems into 2D, we discover topological and Dirac-nodal superfluids hosting distinct MKP flat bands. We show that the emergent symmetries make the MKPs and their flat bands stable against pairing fluctuations that otherwise annihilate Majorana pairs. Exploiting new experimental developments, our scheme provides a unique platform for exploring MKPs and their applications in quantum computation.
