Abstract

The theory of anyon condensation is the foundation of the bulk-boundary relation and topological holography in 2+1D/1+1D. It is believed string condensation should replace anyon condensation in the 3+1D/2+1D topological holography theory. In this work we study string condensations in 3+1D topological orders and their relations to 2+1D phases. We find that a class of non-Lagrangian condensable algebras in 3+1D are exactly dual to a class of 2+1D symmetry enriched gapless phases known as gapless SPTs(gSPT). We show how topological properties of a gSPT can be fully extracted from the dual string condensation. We give an algebraic classification of this class of condensable algebras in 3+1D $G$-gauge theories that we call magnetic and simple. Through the topological holography dictionary, this maps to the classification of 2+1D $G$-symmetric phases with no topological order, including gapped and gapless SPTs. Utilizing the classification, we identify three classes of gSPTs and study their properties and gauging. Along the way, we reveal physical structures of string condensations.

Classification of 1+1D gapless symmetry protected phases via topological holography

Wen, Rui, Andrew C. Potter

Symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT) gives a holographic correspondence between systems with a global symmetry and a higher-dimensional topological field theory. In this framework, classification of gapped phases of matter in spacetime dimension 1+1D correspond to classifications of mechanisms to confine the SymTFT by condensing anyons. In this work, we extend these results to characterize gapless symmetry-protected topological states: symmetry-enriched gapless phases or critical points that exhibit edge modes protected by symmetry and topology. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between 1+1D bosonic gSPTs, and partially-confined boundaries of 2+1D SymTFTs. From general physical considerations, we determine the set of data and consistency conditions required to define a 1+1D gSPT, and show that this data precisely matches that of symmetry-preserving partial confinement (or partially gapped boundaries) of 2+1D quantum double models. We illustrate this correspondence through a dimensional reduction (thin-slab) construction, which enables a physically-intuitive derivation of how properties of the gSPT such as edge modes, emergent anomalies, and stability to perturbations arise from the SymTFT perspective.ditions required to define a 1+1D gSPT and show that they fully determine the physics of the gSPT including edge modes and emergent anomaly.

Classification of 1 + 1 D gapless symmetry protected phases via topological holography

Rui Wen, Andrew C. Potter

Classifying gapless phases of matter remains a fundamental challenge in condensed matter theory. The authors pioneer here a systematic classification of 1+1D bosonic gapless symmetry-protected topological phases via the Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT) framework. They derive, from physical considerations, the algebra of symmetry operators in a 1+1D bosonic gSPT and show that it precisely matches the structure of condensable algebras in the SymTFT. This study marks the first systematic classification of gapless quantum phases in the SymTFT paradigm.

Twin Algebras: Condensable Algebras beyond Anyons

Yuhan Gai, Sakura Schafer-Nameki, Alison Warman

Condensable algebras in 2+1d non-chiral topological orders characterize gapped boundary conditions and interfaces. Applied to the Symmetry Topological Field Theory, they allow classification of symmetric gapped phases and impose sharp constraints on possible phase transitions. A condensable algebra is specified not only by its underlying set of anyons, which end on the boundary or interface, but also by its algebra structure. We introduce the concept of twin condensable algebras, which have the same anyon decomposition, but inequivalent algebra structure. We revisit the classification of condensable algebras in $\mathcal{Z}(\text{Vec}_G^ω)$, i.e. in group-theoretical topological orders for finite groups $G$ with anomaly $ω$. In this context we are able to identify twin algebras that arise from different mechanisms, such as subgroup data, SPT cocycles, and symmetry actions. In particular, we construct infinite families of examples of twins from so-called Gassmann triples, and exhibit cases in which the reduced topological orders are inequivalent despite having identical anyon content. Physically, twin algebras describe distinct symmetric phases that have isomorphic spaces of ground states, but inequivalent order parameters. Such twin phases never exhibit relative spontaneous symmetry breaking, and can be used to construct phase transitions without hidden symmetry breaking, which are intrinsically beyond Landau transitions.

Topological holography for fermions

Wen, Rui, Weicheng Ye, Andrew C. Potter

Topological holography is a conjectured correspondence between the symmetry charges and defects of a $D$-dimensional system with the anyons in a $(D+1)$-dimensional topological order: the symmetry topological field theory (SymTFT). Topological holography is conjectured to capture the topological aspects of symmetry in gapped and gapless systems, with different phases corresponding to different gapped boundaries (anyon condensations) of the SymTFT. This correspondence was previously considered primarily for bosonic systems, excluding many phases of condensed matter systems involving fermionic electrons. In this work, we extend the SymTFT framework to establish a topological holography correspondence for fermionic systems. We demonstrate that this fermionic SymTFT framework captures the known properties of $1+1D$ fermion gapped phases and critical points, including the classification, edge-modes, and stacking rules of fermionic symmetry-protected topological phases (SPTs), and computation of partition functions of fermionic conformal field theories (CFTs). Beyond merely reproducing known properties, we show that the SymTFT approach can additionally serve as a practical tool for discovering new physics, and use this framework to construct a new example of a fermionic intrinsically gapless SPT phase characterized by an emergent fermionic anomaly.

On gapless topological phases and their holographic duals

Wen, Rui

Despite great success we have achieved in the past two decades on systematically understanding gapped topological phases, a firm foundation for understanding gapless topological phases is still lacking. In this dissertation I develop a general framework to describe, classify and construct gapped and gapless phases with or without symmetry. I then apply this framework to construct new gapless phases, and classify some classes of them completely. The first chapter is a non-technical summary of the subjects, ideas and results of the rest of the dissertation. In the first chapter I introduce the notion of gapless topological phases, and briefly discuss their general structures. We also discuss how topological holography can be useful for classifying and constructing gapless phases with generalized symmetries. In chapter two I develop a framework for understanding general quantum phases and phase transitions with generalized symmetries. After reviewing the established theory of gapped phases, we introduce two key notions: quantum order and symmetry-enriched quantum order. These concepts are the correct generalized of topological order and symmetry-enriched topological orders. I show that these new notions subsume conventional phase transitions, gapless spin liquids, and gapless symmetry-protected topological phases. For a class of symmetry-enriched quantum orders with finite many topological defects, we present a general classification using higher tensor category theory. The rest of the dissertation provides more detailed studies of specific gapless topological phases, including classification and lattice model construction of gapless symmetry-protected topological phases and the connection to the theory of topological holography.

Self-dual $S_3$ gauge theory in 2+1d: lattice model and topological phase transitions

Da-Chuan Lu, Chong Wang, Ashvin Vishwanath

Electric-magnetic self-duality of the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory, realized microscopically as a half-lattice-translation exchanging electric charge and magnetic flux, has been an influential example of a duality symmetry with an exact lattice realization. We construct the first non-Abelian generalization of this construction: a lattice model of the $S_3$ quantum double $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ on a tensor product Hilbert space in which the $\mathbb{Z}^{\mathrm{em}}_2$ anyon-permutation symmetry, exchanging the non-Abelian chargeon $C$ and fluxon $F$, is realized via lattice translation. Consequently we find that the zigzag boundary termination of the model realizes, without fine-tuning, a gapless critical edge state described by the tetracritical Ising CFT. The bulk admits three independent $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\mathrm{em}}$-preserving bosonic perturbations, driving $\mathcal{D}(S_3)$ into distinct gapped phases. We analyze these transitions by three independent methods: category-theoretic anyon condensation, microscopic lattice Hamiltonians, and Chern-Simons-Higgs theory, which all agree, yielding a unified picture. These examples motivate a minimal-condensation principle: proliferating a bosonic anyon generically drives condensation of a minimal condensable algebra containing it, with symmetry-related condensates appearing as degenerate vacua that spontaneously break the anyon-permutation symmetry. Our model construction extends to an infinite family of self-dual dihedral quantum doubles $\mathcal{D}(D_{2n})$. Notably, each model is sign-problem-free, opening the door to large-scale numerical exploration of the phases of non-Abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theories.
