Generating three-photon Rabi oscillations without a large-detuning condition

Abstract

It is well known that in the quantum Rabi model, a three-photon resonance occurs when the cavity field bare frequency is about 1/3 of the atomic transition frequency. In this manuscript, we show that the resonance can also be generated in the absence of the ``1/3 condition'' by employing an artificial atom with tunable transition frequency. To realize the protocol, the modulation frequency should be comparable to the cavity frequency in order to induce a counter-rotating interaction in the effective Hamiltonian. In this way, three-photon Rabi oscillations can be observed in a small-detuning regime, avoiding the excitation of high-energy states of the atom. We derive an effective Hamiltonian (equivalent to the anisotropic Rabi model Hamiltonian) to determine the magnitude of the energy splitting and the resonance position. Numerical simulation results show that the protocol not only generates a three-photon resonance, but also has a detectable output photon flux. We hope the protocol can be exploited for the realization of Fock-state sources and the generation of multiparticle entanglement.

Entanglement generation of arbitrary squeezed Fock states

We propose an efficient and robust protocol for the generation of entanglement between a superconducting qubit and a squeezed cavity. By applying a parametric drive to the cavity coupled to the qubit, the dynamical evolution of the system is precisely described by an anisotropic Rabi model within a squeezed reference frame. Utilizing high-order time-averaging methods, we analytically derive the resonance conditions and the effective Rabi frequency for the high-order three-photon process. By implementing an adiabatic passage, slowly tuning the cavity frequency across the resonance, the system is steered into a maximally entangled state, e.g., between the three-photon state $\ket{g,3}$ and the qubit excited state $\ket{e,0}$ in the squeezed picture. Numerical simulation results confirm the high fidelity and robustness of the proposed protocol. Our method provides a practical pathway for generating complex non-Gaussian entangled states, which are of significant value for fault-tolerant quantum computation and quantum metrology beyond the standard quantum limit.

Simulating Anisotropic quantum Rabi model via frequency modulation

Gangcheng Wang, Ruoqi Xiao, H. Z. Shen +2 more

Anisotropic quantum Rabi model is a generalization of quantum Rabi model, which allows its rotating and counter-rotating terms to have two different coupling constants. It provides us with a fundamental model to understand various physical features concerning quantum optics, solid-state physics, and mesoscopic physics. In this paper, we propose an experimental feasible scheme to implement anisotropic quantum Rabi model in a circuit quantum electrodynamics system via periodic frequency modulation. An effective Hamiltonian describing the tunable anisotropic quantum Rabi model can be derived from a qubit-resonator coupling system modulated by two periodic driving fields. All effective parameters of the simulated system can be adjusted by tuning the initial phases, the frequencies and the amplitudes of the driving fields. We show that the periodic driving is able to drive a coupled system in dispersive regime to ultrastrong coupling regime, and even deep-strong coupling regime. The derived effective Hamiltonian allows us to obtain pure rotating term and counter-rotating term. Numerical simulation shows that such effective Hamiltonian is valid in ultrastrong coupling regime, and stronger coupling regime. Moreover, our scheme can be generalized to the multi-qubit case. We also give some applications of the simulated system to the Schrödinger cat states and quantum gate generalization. The presented proposal will pave a way to further study the stronger anisotropic Rabi model whose coupling strength is far away from ultrastrong coupling and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum optics.

Beyond the Rabi model: Light interactions with polar atomic systems in a cavity

Giovanni Scala, Karolina Słowik, Paolo Facchi A +2 more

The Rabi Hamiltonian, describing the interaction between a two-level atomic system and a single-cavity mode of the electromagnetic field, is one of the fundamental models in quantum optics. The model becomes exactly solvable by considering an atom without permanent dipole moments, whose excitation energy is quasiresonant with the cavity photon energy, and by neglecting the nonresonant (counter-rotating) terms. In this case, after including the decay of either the atom or the cavity mode to a continuum, one can derive the well-known phenomenology of quasiresonant transitions, including the fluorescence triplets. In this work we consider the most general Rabi model, incorporating the effects of permanent atomic electric dipole moments. Based on a perturbative analysis, we compare the intensities of emission lines induced by rotating terms, counter-rotating terms, and parity-symmetry-breaking terms in order to identify the parameter regimes in which these different contributions play a significant role. The analysis reveals that the emission strength related to the existence of permanent dipoles may surpass the one due to the counter-rotating interaction terms but is usually much weaker than the emission due to the main, resonant coupling. This ratio can be modified in systems with a reduced dimensionality or by engineering the energy spectral density of the continuum.

Multiphonon-resonance quantum Rabi model and adiabatic passage in a cavity-optomechanical system

Zhi‐Rong Zhong, Lei Chen, Jianqi Sheng +2 more

In this paper, we propose a scheme to achieve a multiphonon-resonance quantum Rabi model and adiabatic passage in a strong-coupling cavity optomechanical system. In the scheme, when the driving bichromatic laser beam is adjusted to the off-resonant j -order red- and blue-sideband, the interaction between the cavity and mechanical oscillator leads to a j -phonon resonance quantum Rabi model. Moreover, we show that there exists a resonant multi-phonon coupling via intermediate states connected by counter-rotating processes when the frequency of the simulated bosonic mode is near a fraction of the transition frequency of the simulated two-level system. As a typical example, we theoretically analyze the two-phonon resonance quantum Rabi model, and derive an effective Hamiltonian of the six-phonon coupling. Finally, we present a method of six-phonon generation based on adiabatic passage across the resonance. Numerical simulations confirm the validity of the proposed scheme. Theoretically, the proposed scheme can be extended to the realization of 3 j -phonon state.

A Comparison of Quantum and Semiclassical Rabi Models Near Multiphoton Resonances in the Presence of Parametric Modulation

Marcos V. S. de Paula, Marco A. Damasceno Faustino, Alexandre V. Dodonov

We compare the semiclassical and quantum predictions for the unitary dynamics of a two-level atom interacting with a single-mode electromagnetic field under parametric modulation of the atomic parameters in the regime of multiphoton atom–field resonances. We derive approximate analytic solutions for the semiclassical Rabi model when the atomic transition frequency and the atom–field coupling strength undergo harmonic external modulations. These solutions are compared to the predictions of the quantum Rabi model, which we solve numerically for an initial coherent state with a large average photon number (on the order of 104), in the regime of three-photon resonance. We show that, for short enough times and sufficiently intense coherent states, the semiclassical dynamics agrees quite well with the quantum dynamics, although it inevitably fails at longer times due to the absence of collapse–revival behavior. Furthermore, we describe how the field state evolves throughout the interaction, presenting numerical results for the average photon number, entropies (related to atom–field entanglement), and other quantities characterizing the photon number statistics of the electromagnetic field.
