Abstract

Anisotropic quantum Rabi model is a generalization of quantum Rabi model, which allows its rotating and counter-rotating terms to have two different coupling constants. It provides us with a fundamental model to understand various physical features concerning quantum optics, solid-state physics, and mesoscopic physics. In this paper, we propose an experimental feasible scheme to implement anisotropic quantum Rabi model in a circuit quantum electrodynamics system via periodic frequency modulation. An effective Hamiltonian describing the tunable anisotropic quantum Rabi model can be derived from a qubit-resonator coupling system modulated by two periodic driving fields. All effective parameters of the simulated system can be adjusted by tuning the initial phases, the frequencies and the amplitudes of the driving fields. We show that the periodic driving is able to drive a coupled system in dispersive regime to ultrastrong coupling regime, and even deep-strong coupling regime. The derived effective Hamiltonian allows us to obtain pure rotating term and counter-rotating term. Numerical simulation shows that such effective Hamiltonian is valid in ultrastrong coupling regime, and stronger coupling regime. Moreover, our scheme can be generalized to the multi-qubit case. We also give some applications of the simulated system to the Schrödinger cat states and quantum gate generalization. The presented proposal will pave a way to further study the stronger anisotropic Rabi model whose coupling strength is far away from ultrastrong coupling and deep-strong coupling regimes in quantum optics.

Multi-qubit Quantum Rabi Model and Multi-partite Entangled States in a Circuit QED System

Jialun Li, Gangcheng Wang, Ruoqi Xiao +3 more

Multi-qubit quantum Rabi model, which is a fundamental model describing light-matter interaction, plays an important role in various physical systems. In this paper, we propose a theoretical method to simulate multi-qubit quantum Rabi model in a circuit quantum electrodynamics system. By means of external transversal and longitudinal driving fields, an effective Hamiltonian describing the multi-qubit quantum Rabi model is derived. The effective frequency of the resonator and the effective splitting of the qubits depend on the external driving fields. By adjusting the frequencies and the amplitudes of the driving fields, the stronger coupling regimes could be reached. The numerical simulation shows that our proposal works well in a wide range of parameter space. Moreover, our scheme can be utilized to generate two-qubit gate, Schrödinger states, and multi-qubit GHZ states. The maximum displacement of the Schrödinger cat states can be enhanced by increasing the number of the qubits and the relative coupling strength. It should be mention that we can obtain high fidelity Schrödinger cat states and multi-qubit GHZ states even the system suffering dissipation. The presented proposal may open a way to study the stronger coupling regimes whose coupling strength is far away from ultrastrong coupling regimes.

Controlling the superradiant phase transition in the quantum Rabi model

Xuan Xie, Cheng Liu, Linlin Jiang +1 more

In the ultrastrong-coupling regime, the quantum Rabi model can exhibit quantum phase transition (QPT) when the ratio of the qubit transition frequency to the frequency of the cavity field approaches infinity. However, it is challenging to control the QPT in few-body systems because of the limited coupling strength and the ${A}^{2}$ term. Here, we propose a practical scheme to manipulate the QPT of quantum Rabi model in the strong-coupling regime. By applying a periodic frequency modulation to the two-level system in a quantum Rabi model in the strong-coupling regime, an anisotropic quantum Rabi model with ultrastrong and tunable coupling strengths for rotating and counterrotating terms is obtained. The ground state and excitation energy of this model, in terms of the modulation parameters, are studied. We find that the QPT of the quantum Rabi model can be observed in the strong-coupling regime and externally controlled by the modulation.

Controllable anisotropic quantum Rabi model beyond the ultrastrong coupling regime with circuit QED systems

Yimin Wang, Wen‐Long You, Maoxin Liu +4 more

By manipulating the flux qubits with bichromatic time-dependent magnetic fluxes in standard circuit QED systems, we propose an experimentally-accessible method to approach the physics of the anisotropic quantum Rabi model (AQRM) in broad parameter ranges, where the rotating and counter-rotating interactions are governed by two different coupling constants. Assisted by theoretical derivations and numerical calculations, we show that our scheme not only allows for individual control of the parameters in the simulated AQRM but also reproduces the dynamics of the ultrastrong and deep strong coupling regimes. Therefore, our scheme advances the investigation of extremely strong interactions of the AQRM, which are usually experimentally unattainable. Furthermore, associated with the special case of the degenerate AQRM, we demonstrate that our setup may also find applications for protected quantum memory and quantum computation since it can be used to generate the Schr\{o}dinger cat states and the quantum controlled phase gates when scaling up.

Anisotropic Rabi Model as a Noise Biased Qubit

Jia-Wen Yu, Ke-Xiong Yan, Yuan Qiu +7 more

We present the quantum anisotropic Rabi model as a potential resource for a noise biased qubit. The system-environment coupling can be biased by tuning the relative strengths of the rotating-wave and counter-rotating-wave interactions, characterized by the anisotropy parameter $η$. This anisotropy selectively suppresses dominant decoherence pathways, thereby enabling the construction of a protected logical qubit in the ultrastrong and deep-strong coupling regimes. The logical states (formed by the ground and first excited states of the anisotropic Rabi model) possess coherence times that are enhanced compared to the isotropic case. Moreover, we construct a set of universal gate operations within the logical-state subspace and demonstrate that the gate operations associated with different values of $η$ exhibit robustness against external noise. These findings are expected to inspire applications and research directions for the anisotropic Rabi model with promising potential impacts.

Ultrastrong Jaynes-Cummings model

Jin‐Feng Huang, Jie‐Qiao Liao, Le‐Man Kuang

We propose a reliable scheme to realize the ultrastrong Jaynes-Cummings (JC) model by simultaneously modulating the resonance frequencies of the two-level system and the bosonic mode in the ultrastrong quantum Rabi model. We find that in both the high- and low-frequency modulation regimes, the counter-rotating terms can be completely suppressed without reducing the coupling strength of the rotating-wave terms, and hence the ultrastrong JC Hamiltonian is achieved. The ultrastrong JC interaction can not only be used to implement ultrafast quantum operations such as ultrafast quantum state transfer and quantum logic gates but also will open up a new route to the demonstration of quantum phase transition associated with the JC Hamiltonian across the deep-strong-coupling point. Some discussions on the experimental implementation of this scheme with circuit-QED systems are presented.

Counter-rotating effect on frequency shift of flux qubit in ultrastrongly coupled circuit-quantum-electrodynamics system

Zhen Chen, Shuai-Peng Wang, Tiefu Li +1 more

In recent years, quantum Rabi model has aroused considerable interest because of its fundamental importance and potential applications in quantum technologies. For a conventional cavity-quantum-electrodynamic (cavity-QED) system involving the interaction between an atom and photons in a cavity, the atom-photon coupling frequency is much smaller than the transition frequency of the atom and the frequency of the cavity mode. This cavity-QED system is usually described by the Jaynes-Cummings model in which the rotating-wave approximation can be adopted by neglecting the counter-rotating coupling terms in the Hamiltonian of the system. However, by designing the unique structure of the superconducting circuit, the ultrastrong-coupling regime can be achieved in a circuit-QED system in which the counter-rotating coupling terms become as important as the rotating terms. Thus, the rotating-wave approximation cannot be used in the ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system. Owing to the ultrastrong coupling, this circuit-QED system is described by the standard quantum Rabi model when a superconducting qubit is coupled only to a single resonator mode. In this work, we experimentally study an ultrastrongly coupled circuit-QED system consisting of a four-junction superconducting flux qubit and a muti-mode coplanar-waveguide resonator. The transmission-spectrum measurement and numerical simulations show that the system is in the ultrastrong-coupling regime. By changing the photon number in the resonator, we observe the frequency shift of the flux qubit via the spectroscopic measurement. This frequency shift contains the contributions from not only the rotating-coupling terms but also the counter-rotating terms, which is in good agreement with the theory. The result indicates that this ultrastrongly-coupled quantum system can be used as a good platform to investigate the quantum Rabi model and has potential applications in various aspects of quantum technology, such as quantum simulation, ultrafast quantum gates, entangled-state preparation and protected qubits.
