Abstract

Rydberg atoms in an optical tweezer array have been used as a quantum simulator of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Ising model with longitudinal and transverse fields. We suggest how to implement the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interaction the sign of which is opposite to that of the nearest-neighbor one in the Rydberg atom systems. We show that this can be achieved by weakly coupling one Rydberg state with another Rydberg state. We further study the surface criticality associated with the first-order quantum phase transition between the antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, which emerges due to the sign-inverted NNN interaction. From the microscopic model, we derive a Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation, which describes static and dynamic properties of the antiferromagnetic order parameter near the transition. Using both analytical GL theory and numerical method based on a mean-field theory, we calculate the order parameter in the proximity of a boundary of the system in order to show that the healing length of the order parameter logarithmically diverges, signaling the surface criticality.

Phase transitions and critical characteristics in the layered antiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor intralayer interactions

Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович, Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev

Phase transitions and critical characteristics of the layered antiferromagnetic Ising model in the case of a cubic lattice with next-nearest-neighbor intralayer interactions are studied in the framework of the Monte Carlo method implementing the replica algorithm. The characteristics of the phase transitions are analyzed within the histogram method and with the Binder cumulants. For the model under study, it is found that the transition from the superantiferromagnetic phase to the paramagnetic one is a second order phase transition. The static critical exponents for the specific heat α, susceptibility γ, order parameter β, correlation radius ν, and the Fisher exponent η are calculated using the finite-size scaling theory. It is shown that the three-dimensional Ising model for the cubic lattice with next-nearest-neighbor interactions belongs to the same universality class of critical behavior as the completely frustrated three-dimensional Ising model.

Deconfined quantum criticality in the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with next-nearest-neighbor Ising exchange

J. Hove, Asle Sudbø

We have considered the $S=1∕2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in two dimensions, with an additional Ising next-nearest-neighbor interaction. Antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions will lead to frustration, and the system responds with flipping the spins down in the $xy$ plane. For large next-nearest-neighbor coupling the system will order in a striped phase along the $z$ axis, this phase is reached through a first-order transition. We have considered two generalizations of this model, one with random next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and one with an enlarged unit cell, where only half of the atoms have next-nearest-neighbor interactions. In both cases the transition is softened to a second-order transition separating two ordered states. In the latter case we have estimated the quantum critical exponent $\ensuremath{\beta}\ensuremath{\approx}0.25$. These two cases then represent candidate examples of deconfined quantum criticality.

Phase transitions in the two-dimensional superantiferromagnetic Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor interactions

We use Monte Carlo and transfer matrix methods in combination with extrapolation schemes to determine the phase diagram of the two-dimensional superantiferromagnetic (SAF) Ising model with next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions in a magnetic field. The interactions between nearest-neighbor (NN) spins are ferromagnetic along x, and antiferromagnetic along Y. We find that for sufficiently low temperatures and fields, there exists a region limited by a critical line of second-order transitions separating a SAF phase from a magnetically induced paramagnetic phase. We did not find any region with either first-order transition or with reentrant behavior. The NNN couplings produce either an expansion or a contraction of the SAF phase. Expansion occurs when the interactions are antiferromagnetic, and contraction when they are ferromagnetic. There is a critical ratio R(c)=1/2 between NNN and NN couplings, beyond which the SAF phase no longer exists.

Phase transitions and critical properties in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a layered triangular lattice with allowance for intralayer next-nearest-neighbor interactions

М. К. Бадиев, Akai Kurbanovich Murtazaev, Рамазанов Магомедшейх Курбанович

The phase transitions (PTs) and critical properties of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a layered (stacked) triangular lattice have been studied by the Monte Carlo method using a replica algorithm with allowance for the next-nearest-neighbor interactions. The character of PTs is analyzed using the histogram technique and the method of Binder cumulants. It is established that the transition from the disordered to paramagnetic phase in the adopted model is a second-order PT. Static critical exponents of the heat capacity (α), susceptibility (γ), order parameter (β), and correlation radius (ν) and the Fischer exponent η are calculated using the finite-size scaling theory. It is shown that (i) the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a layered triangular lattice belongs to the XY universality class of critical behavior and (ii) allowance for the intralayer interactions of next-nearest neighbors in the adopted model leads to a change in the universality class of critical behavior.

Reentrance of the Disordered Phase in the Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on a Square Lattice with Longitudinal and Transverse Magnetic Fields

Ryui Kaneko, Yoshihide Douda, Shimpei Goto +1 more

Motivated by recent experiments with Rydberg atoms in an optical tweezer array, we accurately map out the ground-state phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a square lattice with longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields using the quantum Monte Carlo method. For a small but nonzero transverse field, the transition longitudinal field is found to remain nearly constant. By scrutinizing the phase diagram, we uncover a narrow region where the system exhibits reentrant transitions between the disordered and antiferromagnetic phases with increasing transverse field. Our phase diagram provides a useful benchmark for quantum simulation of a Rydberg atom system.

A Monte Carlo and renormalization group study of the Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions on the triangular lattice

James N. Glosli, Michael Plischke

The Ising model with nearest and next nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions on the triangular lattice displays, for Jnnn/Jnn = 0.1, three phase transitions in different universality classes as the magnetic field is increased. We have studied this model using Monte Carlo and renormalization group techniques. The transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 1 phase (universality class of the Heisenberg model with cubic anisotropy) is found to be first order; the transition from the paramagnetic phase to the [Formula: see text] phase (universality class of the three state Potts model) is continuous; and the transition from the paramagnetic to the 2 × 2 phase (universality class of the four state Potts model) is found to change from first order to continuous as the field is increased. We have mapped out the phase diagram and determined the critical exponents for the continuous transitions. A novel technique, using a Landau-like free energy functional determined from Monte Carlo calculations, to distinguish between first order and continuous transitions, is described.
