Abstract

Inspired by recent developments in the study of the model of double scaled SYK (DSSYK), as elucidated in a recent paper, we embark on a re-evaluation of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Our motivation stems from the insights gained from the DSSYK model, particularly its ability to capture essential features of quantum dynamics and gravitational effects . In this work, we delve into the SYK model, uncovering precise solutions for the two-point function and self-energy that have not been previously reported. Building upon the advancements made in particle physics phenomenology, we extend the SYK model to encompass tensor field theory. Through the incorporation of a cutoff term to ensure convergence, we substantially advance our understanding of quantum many-body physics. Our investigation extends to experimental parameter estimation and the exploration of cutoff dependency in random couplings, providing invaluable insights into system dynamics. The introduction of a novel tensor field theory replaces conventional fermionic degrees of freedom with tensorial counterparts, leading to the discovery of intriguing phase transition phenomena characterized by a first-order transition. Furthermore, we elucidate a direct linear relationship between the coupling parameter and the cutoff scale. These findings not only shed light on emergent behavior across both high-energy physics and condensed matter systems but also pave the way for further theoretical and experimental exploration, inspired by the recent advancements in the SYK model.

An introduction to the SYK model

Vladimir Rosenhaus

Abstract The Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model is a strongly coupled, quantum many-body system that is chaotic, nearly conformally invariant, and exactly solvable. This remarkable and, to date, unique combination of properties have driven the intense activity surrounding the SYK model and its applications within both high energy and condensed matter physics. In this review we give an introduction to the SYK model and recent developments connected to it. We discuss: SYK and tensor models as a new class of large N quantum field theories, the near-conformal invariance in the infrared, the computation of correlation functions, generalizations of the SYK model, and applications to AdS/CFT and strange metals.

Family of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models motivated by experimental considerations

Étienne Lantagne-Hurtubise, Chengshu Li, Marcel Franz

Several condensed-matter platforms have been proposed recently to realize the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in their low-energy limit. In these proposed realizations, the characteristic SYK behavior is expected to occur under certain assumptions about the underlying physical system that (i) render all bilinear terms small compared to four-fermion interactions and (ii) ensure that the coupling constants are approximately all-to-all and independent random variables. In this work we explore, both analytically and numerically, the family of models that arises when we relax these assumptions in ways motivated by real physical systems. By relaxing (i) and allowing large bilinear terms, we obtain a novel, exactly solvable cousin of the $\mathrm{SYK}$ model. It exhibits two distinct phases separated by a quantum phase transition characterized by a power-law, ${\ensuremath{\sim}|\ensuremath{\omega}|}^{\ensuremath{-}1/3}$, scaling of the low-energy spectral density, despite being a noninteracting model. By relaxing (ii), we obtain close relatives of the $\mathrm{SYK}$ model which exhibit interesting behaviors, including a chaotic non-Fermi liquid phase with continuously varying fermion scaling dimension, and a phase transition to a disordered Fermi liquid as a function of interaction range and disorder length scale.

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev models and beyond: Window into non-Fermi liquids

Debanjan Chowdhury, Antoine Georges, Olivier Parcollet +1 more

The Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model is a solvable model of a many-body quantum system that has stimulated interest in both condensed matter physics and quantum gravity. This review focuses on the insights provided by the SYK model, which has no quasiparticle excitations, into the physics of Planckian non-Fermi-liquid metals. This is discussed for a range of strongly correlated models and in relation to experiments on strongly correlated materials. Also included is a discussion of recent developments regarding the connections between the SYK model and the quantum theory of black holes.

From Chaos to Equilibrium: Dynamics and Thermodynamics of Fermionic Quantum Matter

Rishabh Jha

This dissertation presents a comprehensive investigation of fermionic quantum matter into the intricate relationship between quantum chaos, thermalization, and their connection to gravitational duals, with particular emphasis on the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and its extensions. Through an integrated approach combining analytical solutions in the large-N limit with advanced numerical techniques, we explore fundamental questions in quantum many-body physics, including the interplay of chaos and ergodicity, universal transport in non-Fermi liquids, and the role of gravitational analogs in strongly correlated systems. We first demonstrate that coupled SYK lattices evade instantaneous thermalization despite weak charge fluctuations, governed by a discrete wave equation dependent solely on hopping strength, independent of on-site interactions. Thermodynamically, coupled SYK models exhibit critical exponents universal to van der Waals fluids and AdS black holes, yet diverge from the Hawking-Page transition at ultralow temperatures, revealing a continuum of first-order phase transitions. They simultaneously retain the quantum chaotic properties of both a single-dot SYK model and black holes. In extended SYK chains, we identify a universal DC conductivity bound across interaction regimes, identifying crossovers between insulating, Fermi liquid, strange metal, and bad metal phases with signatures of holographic insulator behavior. Quench dynamics in mixed SYK systems reveal rapid thermalization without prethermal plateaus, enabling direct observation of thermalization in closed quantum systems in the thermodynamic limit. To diagnose ergodicity-breaking, we introduce the Krylov variance, a probe of operator localization in Krylov space, validated through mass-deformed SYK and quantum East models. Finally, we uncover Page curve entanglement dynamics and temporal quantum phase transitions in entanglement Hamiltonians of interacting fermionic chains, where symmetry-sector crossings highlight limitations of perturbative calculations performed around initial times, such as in Hawking’s analysis of black hole evaporation. We provide a condensed matter analog of the holographic “island formula” — a mechanism invoking quantum extremal surfaces to resolve the black hole information paradox. Methodologically, this work integrates large-N-type expansions, Keldysh contour techniques, and numerical methods to bridge condensed matter physics, quantum information, and gravitational duality. The results establish SYK-type systems as a universal framework for studying non-Fermi liquids, quantum criticality, and black hole analogs, while paving the way for exploring bosonic extensions and generalizations to open quantum systems.

Entanglement transition and replica wormholes in the dissipative Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

Hanteng Wang, Chang Liu, Pengfei Zhang +1 more

Recent discoveries have highlighted the significance of replica wormholes in resolving the information paradox and establishing the unitarity of black hole evaporation. In this paper, we propose the dissipative Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model as a minimal quantum model that exhibits entanglement dynamics with features qualitatively similar to replica wormholes. As a demonstration, we investigate the entanglement growth of a pair of dissipative SYK models initialized in a thermofield double state. In the regime of large $N$ with weak dissipation, we observe a first-order entanglement transition characterized by a switch of the dominant saddle point: from replica-diagonal solutions for short times to replica wormholelike off-diagonal solutions for long times. Furthermore, we show that the signature of replica wormholes persists even at moderate $N\ensuremath{\lesssim}30$ by using the Monte Carlo quantum trajectory method. Our work may pave the way for explorations of replica wormhole physics in quantum simulators.

The AdS/CFT duality in Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model: Clues from dynamics and thermal entropy

Yilin Zhou

With the in-depth subjects chiasma among different research areas, many people are applying concepts and methods in theoretical high-energy physics to condensed matter systems. One of the most intensely studied tools is the Anti-de Sitter space/Conformal Field Theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. It effectively permits a perturbative treatment of strongly coupled systems. Thus, it has been a focused topic in theoretical physics and high-energy physics. It represents a significant breakthrough in understanding quantum gravity. This paper focuses on the realisation of the duality in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity and Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) Model. To this end, the author derived the action, free energy, thermal entropy, and low-energy dynamics. The symmetry breaking pattern of the SYK model following previous works are also considered. These results were compared with the counterparts in Euclidean JT theory as a cut-out of the complete nearly AdS space in two dimensions. Based on the similarity in the mathematical form of these quantity and symmetry breaking process, the author concludes that the SYK model, as many believed, is a promising candidate for the holographic dual of the JT theory.
