Transmigration of edge states with interaction in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain

Abstract

The effect of Hubbard and Kondo interactions on the edge states in the half-filled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain of electrons is investigated by studying the behavior of charge quasiparticles using Kumar representation and the density matrix renormalization group method. For any finite dimerization of hopping, by increasing the Hubbard interaction, the edge states are found to transmigrate from the physical charge gap to a high energy gap through an intermediate phase without the edge states. The extent of this phase with no edge states shrinks smoothly upon increasing the dimerization. The transmigration of edge states from the charge gap to the high energy gap is also found to occur with Kondo interaction, but through an intermediate phase which itself changes from having no edge states for weak dimerization to having the edge states in the physical as well as the high energy gaps coexisting from moderate to strong dimerization.

Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model at quarter filling: Effects of magnetic field and nonlocal interactions

David Mikhail, Stephan Rachel

The interplay and competition of topology and electron--electron interactions have fascinated researchers since the discovery of topological insulators. The Su--Schrieffer--Heeger--Hubbard (SSH-Hubbard) model is a prototypical model which includes both nontrivial topology and interactions. Due to its simplicity, there are several artificial quantum systems which can realize such a model to a good approximation. Here we focus on the quarter-filled case, where interactions and dimerization open a charge gap. In particular, we study the single-particle spectral function for the extended SSH-Hubbard model with magnetic field and explore several parameter limits where effective model descriptions arise. In the strongly dimerized limit, we show that the low-energy excitations of the spectral function resemble a half-filled Hubbard model with effective dimer sites and renormalized couplings. For strong magnetic field and interactions, we find physics akin to the spinless Su--Schrieffer--Heeger model at half filling, featuring a noninteracting topological phase transition. Moreover, in light of the recent realization of this model in quantum dot simulation, we provide evidence for the stability of the topological phase towards moderate nonlocal interactions in the experimentally expected parameter range.

Interaction-controlled localization in one-dimensional chain: From edges to domain walls

Rahul Samanta, Sudin Ganguly, Santanu K. Maiti

Using Hartree-Fock mean-field approach, we study the role of on-site ($U$) and extended ($V$) Hubbard interactions on the existence and evolution of edge modes in a half-filled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain. We analyze the energy spectrum, local probability amplitudes, and site-resolved charge and spin density profiles across topological, critical, and trivial hopping regimes. We find that the localization of bound states is controlled by the ratio $2V/U$, with edge spin-density-wave modes for $U>2V$ and mid-chain charge-density-wave domain walls for $U<2V$, independent of band topology. These results establish the correlation-driven origin of localized states in finite one-dimensional chains.

Reentrant localization transition in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with random-dimer disorder

Zheng-Wei Zuo, Dawei Kang

The question of whether the topological insulators can host a stable nontrivial phase in the presence of spatially correlated disorder is a fundamental question of interest. Based on theoretical investigations, we analyze the effect of random-dimer disorder on the quantum phase transitions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We explicitly demonstrate that, due to the absence of symmetry, there are no in-gap edge states in certain disordered topological nontrivial gapped phases and the bulk-boundary correspondence breaks down. However, the fractionalized end charges still appear at the ends of the chain. The energy distribution possibility of the in-gap edge states and the possible values of fractionalized end charges are dependent on the concentration of random-dimer disorder. On the other hand, random-dimer disorder and dimer hopping intertwine in an interesting manner. Reentrant localization transition behavior appears, which is evidenced by the fingerprint of the inverse participation ratio, normalized participation ratio, and tunneling conductivity.

Dimensionality Effects on the Charge Gap in the Dimerized Hubbard Model at Quarter Filling: the Density-Matrix and Perturbative Renormalization-Group Approaches

Kenji Yonemitsu, Jun‐ichiro Kishine

We study dimensionality effects on the charge gap in the dimerized Hubbard model at quarter filling, with two approaches. First, we examine three chains coupled via the interchain one-particle hopping integral t b , by the density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) method. Next, we consider the d =1+ε dimensional model, using the perturbative renormalization-group (PRG) method. The dimensionality is controlled through t b and ε, respectively. Both approaches lead to the conclusion that, for a finite dimerization ratio, the charge gap decreases as the dimensionality increases.

Harmonic generation with topological edge states and electron-electron interaction

Siamak Pooyan, D. Bauer

It has been found previously that the presence or absence of topological edge states in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has a huge impact on harmonic generation spectra. More specifically, the yield of harmonics for harmonic orders that correspond to photon energies below the band gap is many orders of magnitude different in the trivial and topological phases. It is shown in this work that this effect is still present if electron-electron interaction is taken into account, i.e., if a Hubbard term is added to the SSH Hamiltonian. To that end, finite SSH-Hubbard chains at half filling are considered that are short enough to be accessible to exact diagonalization but already show edge states in the topological phase. We show that the huge difference in the harmonic yield between the trivial and topological phases can be reproduced with few-level models employing only the many-body ground state and a few excited many-body states.

Probing boundary spins in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger-Hubbard model

Armando A. Aligia, Alejandro M. Lobos, Lucila Peralta Gavensky +1 more

Studying boundary excitations provides a powerful approach to probe correlations in topological phases. We propose that localized spins near the ends of a Su--Schrieffer--Heeger--Hubbard chain embedded in an insulating environment can be detected experimentally using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with electron-spin resonance. When the STM tip is in the contact regime, the tip--end-spin coupling realizes an effective Anderson impurity problem, giving rise to a Kondo peak at low bias. Spatially resolving the Kondo resonance width as the STM tip approaches the chain ends provides an indirect yet clear signature of these localized spins. To support this proposal, we use density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) to calculate the spin gap and spin projection of end states for chains of various lengths and interaction strengths $U$ at half filling. In the noninteracting limit ($U=0$), we derive simple analytical expressions that reproduce the numerical results for sufficiently long chains. We also discuss how the correlated phase of the isolated chain is characterized by boundary zeros in its single-particle Green's function, and briefly comment on their localization properties in relation to the boundary spins.
