Abstract

We propose a chirped-pulse driving protocol and reveal its exceptional property for quantum coherent control. The nonadiabatic passage generated by the driving protocol, which includes the population inversion and the nonadiabaticity-induced transition as its ingredients, is shown to be robust against pulse truncation. We further demonstrate that the protocol allows for universal manipulation on the qubit system through designing pulse sequences with either a properly adjusted sweeping frequency or pulsing intensity.

Nonadiabatic Population Transfer in a Tangent-Pulse Driven Quantum Model

Guang Yang, Wei Li, Li-Xiang Cen

Fine control of the dynamics of a quantum system is the key element to perform quantum information processing and coherent manipulations for atomic and molecular systems. We propose a control protocol using a tangent-pulse driven model and demonstrate that it indicates a desirable design, i.e., of being both fast and accurate for population transfer. As opposed to other existing strategies, a remarkable character of the present scheme is that high velocity of the nonadiabatic evolution itself not only will not lead to unwanted transitions but also can suppress the error caused by the truncation of the driving pulse.

Adiabatic passage and ensemble control of quantum systems

Zaki Leghtas, Alain Sarlette, Pierre Rouchon

This paper considers population transfer between eigenstates of a finite quantum ladder controlled by a classical electric field. Using an appropriate change of variables, we show that this setting can be set in the framework of adiabatic passage, which is known to facilitate ensemble control of quantum systems. Building on this insight, we present a mathematical proof of robustness for a control protocol—chirped pulse—practised by experimentalists to drive an ensemble of quantum systems from the ground state to the most excited state. We then propose new adiabatic control protocols using a single chirped and amplitude-shaped pulse, to robustly perform any permutation of eigenstate populations, on an ensemble of systems with unknown coupling strengths. These adiabatic control protocols are illustrated by simulations on a four-level ladder.

Coherent control of quantum states by quadratically chirped short laser pulses

G. P. Djotyan, A. A. Avetisyan, A. P. Djotyan

We present a novel scheme for coherent manipulation of populations and robust creation of arbitrary coherent superposition of metastable states of a quantum system with lambda configuration of operating energy levels using laser pulses with a quadratically chirped carrier frequency. The case of a single broadband laser pulse is considered, when the frequency spectrum of the pulse exceeds the frequency distance between the metastable energy levels of the system. The results of the dressed state analysis and numerical simulation are presented, demonstrating reliable and robust creation of an arbitrary coherent superposition of metastable states by changing the parameters of laser pulses.

High-fidelity superadiabatic population transfer of a two-level system with a linearly chirped Gaussian pulse

Fu-Quan Dou, Jie Liu, Libin Fu

We investigate high-fidelity superadiabatic quantum driving in a chirped Gaussian two-level model with a Gaussian temporal envelope and a linear detuning. We show that the nonadiabatic losses can be canceled to any desired order by constructing and adjusting an auxiliary Hamiltonian (counter-diabatic field) and a symmetry in the fidelity arises on the counter-diabatic field ratio. A high-fidelity, robust, and accelerated (in a shorter time) transitionless superadiabatic population transfer is achieved that ensures a perfect following of the instantaneous adiabatic ground state even in the nonadiabatic regime. The features make the superadiabatic protocol a potentially important tool for quantum information.

Population transfer and generation of arbitrary superpositions of quantum states in a four-level system using a single-chirped laser pulse

Zhenhua Zhang, Xihua Yang, Xiaona Yan

We propose a scheme for coherent control of population transfer and arbitrary superpositions of quantum states by a single-chirped laser pulse in a Λ-type excited-doublet four-level system. It is shown that selective, efficient, and robust population transfer from the initial state to the target states (excited or ground) can be achieved via chirped adiabatic passage when the pulse bandwidth is smaller than about 1/10 of the energy separations between the excited-doublet levels and between the ground states. Moreover, arbitrary coherent superpositions between the excited-doublet states, or between the higher ground state and either of the excited-doublet states, can be created by appropriately tuning the chirp rate and detuning the laser field. The proposed flexible method of coherent control of population transfer and arbitrary superpositions between the initially unpopulated states requires only a single pulse, and is robust against variations in the laser parameters, which has potential applications in quantum information processing.

Population Transfer between Two Quantum States by Piecewise Chirping of Femtosecond Pulses: Theory and Experiment

Sergey Zhdanovich, E. A. Shapiro, M. Shapiro +2 more

We propose and experimentally demonstrate the method of population transfer by piecewise adiabatic passage between two quantum states. Coherent excitation of a two-level system with a train of ultrashort laser pulses is shown to reproduce the effect of an adiabatic passage, conventionally achieved with a single frequency-chirped pulse. By properly adjusting the amplitudes and phases of the pulses in the excitation pulse train, we achieve complete and robust population transfer to the target state. The piecewise nature of the process suggests a possibility for the selective population transfer in complex quantum systems.
