Abstract

In this study, we analyze Krylov Complexity in two-dimensional conformal field theories subjected to deformed SL$(2,\mathbb{R})$ Hamiltonians. In the vacuum state, we find that the K-complexity exhibits a universal phase structure. The phase structure involves the K-complexity exhibiting an oscillatory behaviour in the non-heating phase, which contrasts with the exponential growth observed in the heating phase, while it displays polynomial growth at the phase boundary. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to compute the K-complexity of a light operator in excited states, considering both large-c CFT and free field theory. In the free field theory, we find a state-independent phase structure of K-complexity. However, in the large-c CFT, the behavior varies, with the K-Complexity once again displaying exponential growth in the heating phase and polynomial growth at the phase boundary. Notably, the precise exponent governing this growth depends on the heaviness of the state under examination. In the non-heating phase, we observe a transition in K-complexity behavior from oscillatory to exponential growth, akin to findings in [1], as it represents a special case within the non-heating phase.

State dependence of Krylov complexity in 2d CFTs

Arnab Kundu, Vinay Malvimat, Ritam Sinha

Abstract We compute the Krylov Complexity of a light operator $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O L in an eigenstate of a 2d CFT at large central charge c. The eigenstate corresponds to a primary operator $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O H under the state-operator correspondence. We observe that the behaviour of K-complexity is different (either bounded or exponential) depending on whether the scaling dimension of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O H is below or above the critical dimension hH = c/24, marked by the 1st order Hawking-Page phase transition point in the dual AdS3 geometry. Based on this feature, we hypothesize that the notions of operator growth and K-complexity for primary operators in 2d CFTs are closely related to the underlying entanglement structure of the state in which they are computed, thereby demonstrating explicitly their state-dependent nature. To provide further evidence for our hypothesis, we perform an analogous computation of K-complexity in a model of free massless scalar field theory in 2d, and in the integrable 2d Ising CFT, where there is no such transition in the spectrum of states.

Krylov complexity of deformed conformal field theories

Arghya Chattopadhyay, Vinay Malvimat, Arpita Mitra

A bstract We consider a perturbative expansion of the Lanczos coefficients and the Krylov complexity for two-dimensional conformal field theories under integrable deformations. Specifically, we explore the consequences of $$ \textrm{T}\overline{\textrm{T}} $$ T T ¯ , $$ \textrm{J}\overline{\textrm{T}} $$ J T ¯ , and $$ \textrm{J}\overline{\textrm{J}} $$ J J ¯ deformations, focusing on first-order corrections in the deformation parameter. Under $$ \textrm{T}\overline{\textrm{T}} $$ T T ¯ deformation, we demonstrate that the Lanczos coefficients b n exhibit unexpected behavior, deviating from linear growth within the valid perturbative regime. Notably, the Krylov exponent characterizing the rate of exponential growth of complexity surpasses that of the undeformed theory for positive value of deformation parameter, suggesting a potential violation of the conjectured operator growth bound within the realm of perturbative analysis. One may attribute this to the existence of logarithmic branch points along with higher order poles in the autocorrelation function compared to the undeformed case. In contrast to this, both $$ \textrm{J}\overline{\textrm{J}} $$ J J ¯ and $$ \textrm{J}\overline{\textrm{T}} $$ J T ¯ deformations induce no first order correction to either the linear growth of Lanczos coefficients at large- n or the Krylov exponent and hence the results for these two deformations align with those of the undeformed theory.

Krylov Complexity in Periodically Driven CFTs and Critical Fermions

Ankit Gill, Anurag Sarkar

We study Krylov construction in periodically driven conformal field theories and their lattice realisations via critical fermions. Two types of driving are considered: a square-wave drive and a continuous sinusoidal drive. Using the Arnoldi construction, we examine Arnoldi coefficients and return amplitudes in periodically driven conformal field theories in the heating and non-heating phases. In the heating phase, the Arnoldi coefficients approach unity exponentially; in contrast, in the non-heating phase, they exhibit oscillatory behaviour. For the lattice realisations, we further analyse the Krylov complexity of the correlation matrix, quasi energy level statistics, and the graph structure induced by the Floquet operator. Although the two drives exhibit similar Krylov growth on the CFT side, their lattice realisations exhibit markedly different spectral and graph signatures, indicating distinct mechanisms governing the transition between the heating and non-heating phases.

Krylov complexity in conformal field theory

Anatoly Y. Dymarsky, Michael Smolkin

Krylov complexity, or K-complexity for short, has recently emerged as a new probe of chaos in quantum systems. It is a measure of operator growth in Krylov space, which conjecturally bounds the operator growth measured by the out of time ordered correlator (OTOC). We study Krylov complexity in conformal field theories by considering arbitrary 2d CFTs, free field, and holographic models. We find that the bound on OTOC provided by Krylov complexity reduces to bound on chaos of Maldacena, Shenker, and Stanford. In all considered examples including free and rational CFTs Krylov complexity grows exponentially, in stark violation of the expectation that exponential growth signifies chaos.

Krylov complexity in free and interacting scalar field theories with bounded power spectrum

Hugo A. Camargo, Viktor Jahnke, Keun-young Kim A +1 more

A bstract We study a notion of operator growth known as Krylov complexity in free and interacting massive scalar quantum field theories in d -dimensions at finite temperature. We consider the effects of mass, one-loop self-energy due to perturbative interactions, and finite ultraviolet cutoffs in continuous momentum space. These deformations change the behavior of Lanczos coefficients and Krylov complexity and induce effects such as the “staggering” of the former into two families, a decrease in the exponential growth rate of the latter, and transitions in their asymptotic behavior. We also discuss the relation between the existence of a mass gap and the property of staggering, and the relation between our ultraviolet cutoffs in continuous theories and lattice theories.
