Abstract

The role of near-neighbor electron attraction V V in strongly correlated systems has been at the forefront of recent research of unconventional superconductivity. However, its implications in the doped Hubbard model on expansive systems remain predominantly unexplored. In this study, we employ the density-matrix renormalization group to examine its effect in the lightly doped t t - t' t ′ -Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders, where t t and t' t ′ are the first and second neighbor electron hopping amplitudes. In the electron-doped regime ( t'>0 t ′ > 0 ), we find that attractive V V can substantially enhance superconducting correlations, driving the system into a pronounced superconducting phase when the attraction exceeds a modest value V_c ≈ 0.5t V c ≈ 0.5 t . In contrast, in the hole-doped regime ( t' <0 t ′ < 0 ), while heightened superconducting correlations have also been observed in the charge stripe phase, the systems remain insulating with pronounced charge density wave order. Our results demonstrate the importance of the electron attraction in boosting superconductivity in broader doped Hubbard systems and highlight the asymmetry between the electron and hole-doped regimes.

Ground-state phase diagram and superconductivity of the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders

Yi‐Fan Jiang, Thomas Devereaux, Hong‐Chen Jiang

The authors employ the density-matrix renormalization group to investigate the doped Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders. It uncovers a rich quantum phase diagram, intricately sensitive to next-nearest-neighbor electron hopping ($t\ensuremath{'}$). The positive-$t$\ensuremath{'} region shows a robust $d$-wave superconducting phase with intertwined superconducting and charge-density-wave orders. In contrast, the negative-$t$\ensuremath{'} side remains insulating, where doped holes form either long-range charge stripe order at small $t$\ensuremath{'} or a holon Wigner crystal with one doped hole per emergent unit cell and short-range spin correlations at larger $t$'.

Enhanced superconductivity by near-neighbor attraction in the doped extended Hubbard model

Cheng Peng, Yao Wang, Jiajia Wen +3 more

A recent experiment has unveiled an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction in the one-dimensional copper-oxide chain ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{3+\ensuremath{\delta}}$. While the effect of the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain has been examined recently, its effect in the Hubbard model beyond the one-dimensional chain remains unclear. Here, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of the extended Hubbard model on long four-leg cylinders on the square lattice. We find that the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ can notably enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations while simultaneously suppressing the charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations. Specifically, for a modestly strong electron attraction, the superconducting correlations become dominant over the CDW correlations with a Luttinger exponent ${K}_{sc}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ and strong divergent superconducting susceptibility. Our results provide a promising way to realize long-range superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model. The relevance of our numerical results to cuprate materials is also discussed.

Emergent Superconductivity and Competing Charge Orders in Hole-Doped Square-Lattice t − J Model

Xin Lu, Feng Chen, Wei Kang Zhu +2 more

The square-lattice Hubbard and closely related t-J models are considered as basic paradigms for understanding strong correlation effects and unconventional superconductivity (SC). Recent large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations on the extended t-J model have identified d-wave SC on the electron-doped side (with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping t_{2}>0) but a dominant charge density wave (CDW) order on the hole-doped side (t_{2}<0), which is inconsistent with the SC of hole-doped cuprate compounds. We re-examine the ground-state phase diagram of the extended t-J model by employing the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculations with much enhanced bond dimensions, allowing more accurate determination of the ground state. On six-leg cylinders, while different CDW phases are identified on the hole-doped side for the doping range δ=1/16-1/8, a SC phase emerges at a lower doping regime, with algebraically decaying pairing correlations and d-wave symmetry. On the wider eight-leg systems, the d-wave SC also emerges on the hole-doped side at the optimal 1/8 doping, demonstrating the winning of SC over CDW by increasing the system width. Our results not only suggest a new path to SC in general t-J model through weakening the competing charge orders, but also provide a unified understanding on the SC of both hole- and electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

Tuning competition between charge order and superconductivity in the square-lattice t − t ′ − J model

Xin Lu, Huaiming Guo, Wei-Qiang Chen +2 more

Recently, a flurry of works have found strong competition between charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity (SC) in the doped Hubbard and $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ models on the square lattice. Interestingly, some recent results suggest that the electron-phonon coupling may suppress CDW order and enhance SC. In this work, we consider the square-lattice Hubbard model with the Holstein or Su-Schrieffer-Heeger electron-phonon coupling at the large-$U$ and antiadiabatic (infinite phonon frequency) limits, which gives an effective $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model with either a density attractive interaction $V$ or a ${J}_{P}$ term that contributes a larger spin exchange and a density repulsive interaction. To explore how these effective couplings may tune the competition between CDW and SC, we implement the density matrix renormalization group simulations on the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}{t}^{\ensuremath{'}}\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model with $V$ or ${J}_{P}$ coupling. We focus on the six-leg cylinder system with the next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, which hosts partially filled stripe and $d$-wave SC in phase diagram. By tuning ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t>0$ and $V$ or ${J}_{P}$, we establish two quantum phase diagrams at $\frac{1}{12}$ doping ratio. In the SC phases, the increased $V$ or ${J}_{P}$ coupling can enhance the quasi-long-range SC order, consistent with some previous findings. Nonetheless, no SC emerges when the partially filled stripe phase disappears with increased $V$ or ${J}_{P}$. Instead, the system has a transition to either a phase-separation-like regime or a filled stripe phase. On the other hand, with increased ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t$, not only the partially filled stripe but the phase separation and filled stripe can also be tuned to SC phase. Our results suggest that although $V$ and ${J}_{P}$ couplings may strengthen hole binding, the hole dynamics controlled by ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}/t$ appears to play a more crucial role for obtaining a SC in the $t\text{\ensuremath{-}}J$ model.

Robust d -Wave Superconductivity in the Square-Lattice t − J Model

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, D. N. Sheng

Unravelling competing orders emergent in doped Mott insulators and their interplay with unconventional superconductivity is one of the major challenges in condensed matter physics. To explore the possible superconducting state in a doped Mott insulator, we study the square-lattice t-J model with both the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor electron hoppings and spin interactions. By using the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group calculation with imposing charge U(1) and spin SU(2) symmetries on the six-leg cylinders, we establish a quantum phase diagram including three phases: a stripe charge density wave phase, a superconducting phase without static charge order, and a superconducting phase coexistent with a weak charge stripe order. Crucially, we demonstrate that the superconducting phase has a power-law pairing correlation that decays much slower than the charge density and spin correlations, which is a quasi-1D descendant of the uniform d-wave superconductor in two dimensions. These findings reveal that enhanced charge and spin fluctuations with optimal doping is able to produce robust d-wave superconductivity in doped Mott insulators, providing a foundation for connecting theories of superconductivity to models of strongly correlated systems.

Stripe order enhanced superconductivity in the Hubbard model

Hong‐Chen Jiang, Steven Allan Kivelson

Unidirectional ("stripe") charge density wave order has now been established as a ubiquitous feature in the phase diagram of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors, where it generally competes with superconductivity. Nonetheless, on theoretical grounds it has been conjectured that stripe order (or other forms of "optimal" inhomogeneity) may play an essential positive role in the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Here, we report density matrix renormalization group studies of the Hubbard model on long four- and six-leg cylinders, where the hopping matrix elements transverse to the long direction are periodically modulated-mimicking the effect of putative period 2 stripe order. We find that even modest amplitude modulations can enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations by many orders of magnitude and drive the system into a phase with a substantial spin gap and superconducting quasi-long-range order with a Luttinger exponent, [Formula: see text].
