Abstract

A recent experiment has unveiled an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction in the one-dimensional copper-oxide chain ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{x}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{3+\ensuremath{\delta}}$. While the effect of the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ in the one-dimensional extended Hubbard chain has been examined recently, its effect in the Hubbard model beyond the one-dimensional chain remains unclear. Here, we report a density matrix renormalization group study of the extended Hubbard model on long four-leg cylinders on the square lattice. We find that the near-neighbor electron attraction $V$ can notably enhance the long-distance superconducting correlations while simultaneously suppressing the charge-density-wave (CDW) correlations. Specifically, for a modestly strong electron attraction, the superconducting correlations become dominant over the CDW correlations with a Luttinger exponent ${K}_{sc}\ensuremath{\sim}1$ and strong divergent superconducting susceptibility. Our results provide a promising way to realize long-range superconductivity in the doped Hubbard model. The relevance of our numerical results to cuprate materials is also discussed.

Spin-triplet pairing induced by near-neighbor attraction in the extended Hubbard model for cuprate chain

Abstract In quantum materials, the electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling are, in general, two essential ingredients, the combined impact of which may drive exotic phases. Recently, an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction, likely mediated by phonons, has been proposed in one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba2−xSrxCuO3+δ. Yet, it is unclear how this strong near-neighbor attraction V influences the superconductivity pairing in the system. Here we perform accurate many-body calculations to study the extended Hubbard model with on-site Coulomb repulsion U > 0 and near-neighbor attraction V < 0 that could well describe the cuprate chain and likely other similar transition-metal materials with both strong correlations and lattice effects. We find a rich quantum phase diagram containing an intriguing Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase — besides the spin density wave and various phase separation phases — that can host dominant spin-triplet pairing correlations and divergent superconductive susceptibility. Upon doping, the spin-triplet superconducting regime can be further broadened, offering a feasible mechanism to realize p-wave superconductivity in realistic cuprate chains.

Spin-Triplet Pairing Induced by Near-Neighbor Attraction in the Extended Hubbard Model

Dai-Wei Qu, Bin-Bin Chen, Hong‐Chen Jiang +2 more

In quantum materials, the electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling are in general two essential ingredients, the combined impact of which may drive exotic phases. Recently, an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction, mediated by phonons, has been unveiled in one-dimensional (1D) copper-oxide chain compound. Yet it is unclear how this strong near-neighbor (NN) attraction $V$ influences the superconductivity pairing. In this work, we employ the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method to study this experiment-relevant extended Hubbard model with on-site Coulomb repulsion $U>0$ and NN attraction $V<0$, relevant for the 1D cuprate chain and likely other similar transition-metal materials. We find this extended $t$-$U$-$V$ model hosts a rich quantum phase diagram consisting of the spin density wave phase, phase separation phases, the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase, and especially an intriguing TLL regime with divergent superconducting susceptibility and dominant spin-triplet pair correlations. Upon doping, such a spin-triplet pairing regime can be further broadened in the parameter space and extends to larger $U$. Our results show robust triplet pairing induced by attractive interaction $V$, offering a feasible mechanism to realize $p$-wave superconductivity in 1D cuprates.

Superconductivity enhancement and particle-hole asymmetry: Interplay with electron attraction in doped Hubbard model

Zhi Ping Xu, Hong‐Chen Jiang, Yi‐Fan Jiang

The role of near-neighbor electron attraction V V in strongly correlated systems has been at the forefront of recent research of unconventional superconductivity. However, its implications in the doped Hubbard model on expansive systems remain predominantly unexplored. In this study, we employ the density-matrix renormalization group to examine its effect in the lightly doped t t - t' t ′ -Hubbard model on six-leg square cylinders, where t t and t' t ′ are the first and second neighbor electron hopping amplitudes. In the electron-doped regime ( t'>0 t ′ > 0 ), we find that attractive V V can substantially enhance superconducting correlations, driving the system into a pronounced superconducting phase when the attraction exceeds a modest value V_c ≈ 0.5t V c ≈ 0.5 t . In contrast, in the hole-doped regime ( t' <0 t ′ < 0 ), while heightened superconducting correlations have also been observed in the charge stripe phase, the systems remain insulating with pronounced charge density wave order. Our results demonstrate the importance of the electron attraction in boosting superconductivity in broader doped Hubbard systems and highlight the asymmetry between the electron and hole-doped regimes.

Pair density wave in the doped three-band Hubbard model on two-leg square cylinders

Hong‐Chen Jiang

A pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting (SC) state with a spatially modulated order parameter. Although much is known about the properties of the PDW state, its realization in microscopic models with divergent susceptibility has been challenging. Here we report a density-matrix renormalization group study of a three-band Hubbard model (also known as the Emery model) for cuprates on long two-leg square cylinders. Upon light doping, we find that the ground state of the system is consistent with that of a PDW state with mutually commensurate and power-law SC, charge (CDW), and spin (SDW) density wave correlations. The SC correlations are dominant between neighboring Cu sites with $d$-wave pairing symmetry. Interestingly, we find that the near-neighbor interactions, especially the near-neighbor attractive ${V}_{pd}$ interaction between neighboring Cu and oxygen sites, can notably enhance the SC correlations while simultaneously suppressing the CDW correlations. For a modestly strong attractive ${V}_{pd}$, the SC correlations become quasi-long-ranged with a divergent PDW susceptibility.

Robust superconducting correlation against intersite interactions in the extended two-leg Hubbard ladder

Zongsheng Zhou, Weinan Ye, Hong‐Gang Luo +2 more

The Hubbard and related models serve as a fundamental starting point in understanding the novel experimental phenomena in correlated electron materials, such as superconductivity, Mott insulator, magnetism. Recent numerical simulations demonstrate that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ plays a key role for the superconductivity. However, the impacts of long-range intersite interactions in such a ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Hubbard model are less explored. Using the state-of-art density-matrix renormalization group method, we investigate the ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-Hubbard model on a two-leg ladder with the intersite interactions extended to the fourth neighbors. The numerical results show that the quasi-long-range superconducting correlation remains stable under the repulsive intersite interactions and these long-range repulsive interactions only change the ground state quantitatively. In addition, inspired by recent experiments on one-dimensional cuprate chain ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{2\ensuremath{-}\mathrm{x}}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{\mathrm{x}}{\mathrm{CuO}}_{3+\ensuremath{\delta}}$, we find that the nearest-neighbor attractive interaction significantly enhances the superconducting correlation when it is comparable to the nearest-neighbor hopping $t$. Stronger attraction drives the system into an electron-hole phase separation. Finally, we discuss the effects of the on-site interaction on superconductivity.

Drastic enhancement of d -wave superconductivity in an extended checkerboard Hubbard model

Kai Cheng, Shi-Chao Fang, Zhongbing Huang

Motivated by the recent discovery of anomalously strong nearest-neighbor attraction in the one-dimensional hole-doped cuprate ${\text{Ba}}_{2+x}{\text{Sr}}_{x}{\text{CuO}}_{3+\ensuremath{\delta}}$, we investigate the $d$-wave superconducting property of an extended checkerboard Hubbard model, which includes an intraplaquette nearest-neighbor attraction $V$. Our quantum Monte Carlo simulations reveal that, for small interplaquette hopping integral ${t}^{\ensuremath{'}}$, $V$ induces a drastic enhancement of long-range $d$-wave pairing correlations in the parameter range of $0.0\ensuremath{\le}U\ensuremath{\le}6.0t$ ($t$ is the intraplaquette hopping integral) when the electron density lies between half-filling and quarter-filling. At $V=\ensuremath{-}0.4t$, one order of magnitude larger $d$-wave pairing correlations are observed compared to the ones at $V=0.0t$ and, more importantly, they exceed the values of the free electron system, signifying the existence of $d$-wave superconductivity. The exact diagonalization calculations on the $2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}2$ plaquette indicate that the enhancement of $d$-wave pairing correlations can be attributed to the $V$-induced enhancement of pair-binding energy. Our findings provide a new perspective on the realization of high-temperature $d$-wave superconductivity via the combination of nearest-neighbor attraction and electronic inhomogeneity.
