Abstract

The intricate interplay between unitary evolution and projective measurements could induce entanglement phase transitions in the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum many-particle systems. In this work, we uncover loss-induced entanglement transitions in non-Hermitian topological superconductors. In prototypical Kitaev chains with onsite particle losses and varying hopping and pairing ranges, the bipartite entanglement entropy of steady states is found to scale logarithmically versus the system size in topologically nontrivial phases and become independent of the system size in the trivial phase. Notably, the scaling coefficients of log-law entangled phases are distinguishable when the underlying system resides in different topological phases. Log-law to log-law and log-law to area-law entanglement phase transitions are further identified when the system switches between different topological phases and goes from a topologically nontrivial to a trivial phase, respectively. These findings not only establish the relationships among spectral, topological and entanglement properties in a class of non-Hermitian topological superconductors but also provide an efficient means to dynamically reveal their distinctive topological features.

Entanglement phase transitions in non-Hermitian quasicrystals

The scaling law of entanglement entropy could undergo qualitative changes during the nonunitary evolution of a quantum many-body system. In this work, we uncover such entanglement phase transitions for free fermions in one-dimensional non-Hermitian quasicrystals (NHQCs). We identify two types of entanglement transitions with different scaling laws and critical behaviors due to the interplay between non-Hermitian effects and quasiperiodic potentials. The first type represents a typical volume-law to area-law transition, which happens together with a PT-symmetry breaking and a localization transition. The second type features an abnormal log-law to area-law transition, which is mediated by a critical phase with a volume-law scaling in the steady-state entanglement entropy. These entangling phases and transitions are demonstrated in two representative models of noninteracting NHQCs. Our results thus advance the study of entanglement transitions in non-Hermitian disordered systems and further disclose the rich entanglement patterns in NHQCs.

Entanglement phase transitions in non-Hermitian Floquet systems

The competition between unitary time evolution and quantum measurements could induce phase transitions in the entanglement characteristics of quantum many-body dynamics. In this work, we reveal such entanglement transitions in the context of non-Hermitian Floquet systems. Focusing on noninteracting fermions in a representative bipartite lattice with balanced gain/loss and under time-periodic quenches, we uncover rich patterns of entanglement transitions due to the interplay between driving and non-Hermitian effects. Specially, we find that the monotonic increase of quenched hopping amplitude could flip the system between volume-law and area-law entangled Floquet phases, yielding alternated entanglement transitions. Meanwhile, the increase of gain/loss strength could trigger area-law to volume-law reentrant transitions in the scaling behavior of steady-state entanglement entropy, which are abnormal and highly unexpected in nondriven systems. Connections between entanglement transitions and parity-time-reversal (PT) transitions in Floquet spectra are further established. Our findings not only build a foundation for exploring entanglement phase transitions in Floquet non-Hermitian setups, but also provide efficient means to engineer and control such transitions by driving fields. Entanglement Phase Transition in Chaotic non-Hermitian Systems

Zhen-Tao Zhang, Feng Mei

We study an entanglement phase transition in a class of chaotic non-Hermitian spin chains whose spin-spin coupling terms commute with the non-Hermitian contributions. Two representative models are investigated: the transverse-field Ising model with a complex longitudinal field and the non-Hermitian XX model with a transverse field. By analyzing their complex spectra, we find that both models undergo a dissipation-induced gapless-gapped phase transition when the transverse field exceeds a model-dependent threshold. Interestingly, the complex gap does not vary monotonically with the dissipation rate; instead, it exhibits pronounced oscillations before entering the gapped phase. By simulating their non-unitary dynamics, we show that the steady-state entanglement entropy undergoes a transition from volume-law to area-law scaling as the dissipation rate increases. Moreover, several unexpected features emerge within the volume-law regime: a larger complex gap or dissipation rate may lead to a more entangled steady state. We trace these unusual behaviors of the complex gap and the steady-state entanglement to level crossings between the maximal imaginary level and other spectral levels. Our work uncovers an exotic entanglement transition in chaotic non-Hermitian many-body systems.

Biorthogonal dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian topological superconductors

Haoran Gu, Yubo Zhao, Siyuan Cheng +3 more

Dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems pose fundamental challenges due to the intrinsic biorthogonality of their eigenstates. In this work, we extend a biorthogonal framework to investigate dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian topological superconductors. Taking the non-Hermitian Kitaev chain as a prototypical model, we construct an associated-state formalism and reformulate the Loschmidt rate function, dynamical topological order parameter, and dynamical Fisher zeros. Within this framework, we find that the critical times at which dynamical quantum phase transitions occur differ from those based on the conventional self-normal approaches. We further analyze momentum-resolved subsystems at critical momenta and demonstrate the robustness of the biorthogonal framework. Our work highlights the essential role of biorthogonality in nonequilibrium dynamics and establishes a consistent theoretical framework for dynamical quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian topological superconductors.

Entanglement Phase Transition Due to Reciprocity Breaking without Measurement or Postselection

Gideon Lee, Tony Jin, Yuxin Wang +2 more

Despite its fully unitary dynamics, the bosonic Kitaev chain (BKC) displays key hallmarks of non-Hermitian physics, including nonreciprocal transport and the non-Hermitian skin effect. Here, we demonstrate another remarkable phenomena: the existence of an entanglement phase transition (EPT) in a variant of the BKC that occurs as a function of a Hamiltonian parameter g and which coincides with a transition from a reciprocal to a nonreciprocal phase. As g is reduced below a critical value, the postquench entanglement entropy of a subsystem of size l goes from a volume-law phase, where it scales as l , to a -law phase, where it scales like l N , where N is the total system size. This EPT occurs for a system undergoing purely unitary evolution and does not involve measurements, postselection, disorder, or dissipation. We derive analytically the entanglement entropy out of and at the critical point for the cases of l = 1 and l / N ≪ 1 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Non-Hermitian topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions: a generic connection

Longwen Zhou, Qianqian Du

Abstract The dynamical and topological properties of non-Hermitian systems have attracted great attention in recent years. In this work, we establish an intrinsic connection between two classes of intriguing phenomena—topological phases and dynamical quantum phase transitions (DQPTs)—in non-Hermitian systems. Focusing on one-dimensional models with chiral symmetry, we find DQPTs following the quench from a trivial to a non-Hermitian topological phase. Moreover, the critical momenta and critical time of the DQPTs are found to be directly related to the topological invariants of the non-Hermitian system. We further demonstrate our theory in three prototypical non-Hermitian lattice models, the lossy Kitaev chain (LKC), the LKC with next-nearest-neighbor hoppings, and the nonreciprocal Su–Schrieffer–Heeger model. Finally, we suggest a proposal to experimentally verify the found connection by a nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond.
