Abstract

Abstract We address quantum characterization of anisotropic spin chains in the presence of anti-symmetric exchange, and investigate whether the Hamiltonian parameters of the chain may be estimated with precision approaching the ultimate limit imposed by quantum mechanics. At variance with previous approaches, we focus on the information that may be extracted by measuring only two neighboring spins rather than a global observable on the entire chain. We evaluate the Fisher information (FI) of a two-spin magnetization measure, and the corresponding quantum Fisher information (QFI), for all the relevant parameters, i.e. the spin coupling, the anisotropy, and the Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) parameter. Our results show that the reduced system made of two neighboring spins may be indeed exploited as a probe to characterize global properties of the entire system. In particular, we find that the ratio between the FI and the QFI is close to unit for a large range of the coupling values. The DM coupling is beneficial for coupling estimation, since it leads to the presence of additional bumps and peaks in the FI and QFI, which are not present in a model that neglects exchange interaction and may be exploited to increase the robustness of the overall estimation procedure. Finally, we address the multiparameter estimation problem, and show that the model is compatible but sloppy, i.e. both the Uhlmann curvature and the determinant of the QFI matrix vanish. Physically, this means that the state of the system actually depends only on a reduced numbers of combinations of parameters, and not on all of them separately.

Critical metrology of minimally accessible anisotropic spin chains

We address quantum metrology in critical spin chains with anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction, and show how local and quasi-local measurements may be exploited to characterize global properties of the systems. In particular, we evaluate the classical (magnetization) and quantum Fisher information of the relevant parameters for the density matrix of a single spin and that of a pair of spins ranging from nearest to sixth-nearest neighbors, to the limiting case of very distant spins. Our results allow us to elucidate the role of the different parameters and to individuate the optimal working regimes for the precise characterization of the system, also clarifying the effects of correlations on the estimation precision.

Controlled Quantum Metrology with Anisotropic Heisenberg Spin Interactions under Intrinsic Decoherence

S. K. Singh, Jia-Xin Peng, Y-J Zhu +1 more

We theoretically investigate quantum parameter estimation in a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg spin system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of intrinsic decoherence described by the Milburn model. Using the Quantum Fisher Information (QFI), we study the estimation of both the uniform magnetic field and the DM interaction strength. Analytical expressions for the time-evolved density matrix are obtained and used to explore the effects of exchange anisotropy, intrinsic decoherence, and probe-state preparation on the achievable estimation precision. Our results show that suitable tuning of the anisotropic exchange coupling and the initial entangled state can considerably enhance the estimation performance, with different optimal parameter regimes emerging for magnetic-field and DM-interaction sensing. To better understand the role of quantum resources in metrology, we also examine the behaviour of concurrence, quantum coherence, and von Neumann entropy. Overall, our findings demonstrate that anisotropic Heisenberg spin systems with DM interaction provide a promising and flexible platform for high-precision quantum metrology even in the presence of intrinsic decoherence.

Adiabatic quantum estimation: A numerical study of the Heisenberg XX model with antisymmetric exchange

L. Fathi Shadehi, H. Rangani Jahromi, M. Ghanaatian

In this paper, we address the adiabatic technique for quantum estimation of the azimuthal orientation of a magnetic field. Exactly solving a model consisting of a two-qubit system, where one of which is driven by a static magnetic field while the other is coupled with the magnetic field rotating adiabatically, we obtain the analytical expression of the quantum Fisher information (QFI). We investigate how the two-qubit system can be used to probe the azimuthal direction of the field and analyze the roles of the intensities of the magnetic fields, Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction, spin–spin coupling coefficient, and the polar orientation of the rotating field on the precision of the estimation. In particular, it is illustrated that the QFI trapping or saturation may occur if the qubit is subjected to a strong rotating field. Moreover, we discuss how the azimuthal direction of the rotating field can be estimated using only the qubit not affected by that field and investigate the conditions under which this strategy is more efficient than use of the qubit locally interacting with the adiabatically rotating field. Interestingly, in the one-qubit scenario, it was found that when the rotating field is weak, the best estimation is achieved by subjecting the probe to a static magnetic field.

Local quantum Fisher information and local quantum uncertainty in two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ chain with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interactions

Soroush Haseli

Abstract Quantum correlations play an important role in quantum information theory. Quantum Fisher information (QFI) via local observables and via local measurements (i.e. local QFI (LQFI)) is a fundamental concept in quantum estimation and quantum metrology. LQFI captures the quantumness of correlations in a multicomponent quantum system. This new discord-like measure is very similar to the quantum correlations measure called local quantum uncertainty (LQU). In this work we will study the LQFI and the LQU in the two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ spin chain model with Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction in the z -direction. Here we show that the DM interaction and spin interactions along the x - and z -axes can increase and maintain LQFI and LQU. It is also shown that because of thermal fluctuations LQFI and LQU are decreased by increasing temperature. They are equal to one at very low temperature and start to decay only after a thereshold temperature.

Quantum metrology for a general Hamiltonian parameter

Shengshi Pang, Todd A. Brun

Quantum metrology enhances the sensitivity of parameter estimation using the distinctive resources of quantum mechanics such as entanglement. It has been shown that the precision of estimating an overall multiplicative factor of a Hamiltonian can be increased to exceed the classical limit, yet little is known about estimating a general Hamiltonian parameter. In this paper, we study this problem in detail. We find that the scaling of the estimation precision with the number of systems can always be optimized to the Heisenberg limit, while the time scaling can be quite different from that of estimating an overall multiplicative factor. We derive the generator of local parameter translation on the unitary evolution operator of the Hamiltonian, and use it to evaluate the estimation precision of the parameter and establish a general upper bound on the quantum Fisher information. The results indicate that the quantum Fisher information generally can be divided into two parts: one is quadratic in time, while the other oscillates with time. When the eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian do not depend on the parameter, the quadratic term vanishes, and the quantum Fisher information will be bounded in this case. To illustrate the results, we give an example of estimating a parameter of a magnetic field by measuring a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ particle and compare the results for estimating the amplitude and the direction of the magnetic field.

Criterion for qubit-assisted quantum metrology approaching Heisenberg scaling

Peng Chen, Jun Jing

We study in this work the metrology precision of a probe system coupled to an ancillary qubit. Restricting the probe-qubit coupling along only one or two directions is found to be a sufficient criterion for the effective dynamical generator to achieve the Heisenberg limit in precision. Under the criterion, the quantum Fisher information (QFI) about the to-be-estimated parameter becomes the expectation value of mean square of the effective generator with respect to the initial state of the composite system. Our criterion is justified in two distinct systems. For a bosonic probe, QFI about the displacement estimation is found to be proportional to the mean excitation number of probe. It renders a counterintuitive result that quantum metrology sensitivity can be enhanced by increasing the temperature of the probe system. For a spin-ensemble probe, QFI about both rotation-phase and magnetic-field estimation exhibit a quadratic dependence on the probe-spin number. It is found that even when the spin-ensemble is prepared as a finite-temperature state, faraway from the so-called resource states, e.g., the squeezed state or the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state, QFI can still manifest a Heisenberg scaling behavior.
